I'm thinking about joing the "Military".

It's all worth it when you can go get your girlfriend working at the factory lift her her up and carry her out of there.

What are you talking about? sorry but you lost me in what you were trying to point out there

he was making reference to An Officer and a Gentleman.

Jokes aren't funny when they have to be explained. :down :csad:

which officer and which gentleman? thats kinda vague...

A movie with Richard Gere. 'An Officer and a Gentlemen'

When I was in the Army I talked to alot of guys who were prior Marines. (For those who don't know if you leave the Corps it's extremely hard to get back in. So the majority of people join another branches) These guys would talk about the Marines like it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. I don't think that they were brainwashed but I'ts a completely different mental conditioning that a Marine goes through.

Hey Blksuperman2, have you ever seen An Officer and a Gentleman?

Yeah. Louis Gossett Jr. was such a bada$$ in that movie. Classic Drill Instructor. I think he won an Oscar for that role.

Why?

Well, we were just discussing it, and i was curious.

by the way, you guys are way off topic, you should get back to giving advice, like me.

Hey C-$, you should follow your heart, like the kid from Captain Planet.

So does anyone here have any experience with the Canadian military:huh:

I got arrested once. They were gonna take me in, but there was no room on the horse. (not really, but i've had nighmares)

The WORSE thing you can do is come to a board full of anti-military people. In case you haven't made that observation yet, of course.

And I'm getting a real kick out of people making it sound like you'll die if you join the military, or they will pay for college, but you won't have time to go, or you'll wind up shooting at "brown people" if you join. Really sounds to me like you're getting more BS on this board than you're getting from your recruiter.

There are approximately 1.5 million people in the military. Of those 1.5 million, three thousand have died in Iraq. That means that your chance of dying in Iraq is, oh, about .2% (or 1/5th of a percent). I would surmise you have probably a better chance of getting run over by a car walking to your burger flipping job if you don't join the military and get an education.

Keep in mind also that you needn't join the Army or the Marines. There's also the Navy and Air Force, as well as the Coast Guard. Those are the five *full-time* divisions of the service. (Someone mentioned the Army National Guard, which is *part-time*, which is also why their educational benefits aren't as good. But that didn't stop the person from dissing *all* military educational benefits, go figure.)

As to education. I spent five years in the Air Force, where I earned a degree in journalism. I did one tour during Desert Storm (back in 90/91). That's the Air Force, though, which is a lot more forgiving of people who want to go to school than being a soldier or marine, or even a sailor, which require overseas deployment much more often and for much longer periods of time. So, if your primary goal is to serve your country WHILE getting an education, I'd recommend the Air Force. If your primary goal is to serve your country and worry about your education later (with the GI Bill, which pays for *all* of your school, despite what some misinformed/ignorant/arrogant people on this board might say), then any of the other three are probably good choices. However, keep in mind that if you join the Army or the Marines, you *will* wind up in Iraq, and probably on the front lines.

Do yourself a favor and go talk to some family members and friends you may have with military experience. Don't come to a board that is largely anti-military and expect sound advice. You'll get nothing but bitterness and exaggerations from, frankly, quite a few people who have never served and who don't know the first thing about the military. (Though that doesn't stop their "expertise" from showing through, does it?)

Whatever you do, good luck.

I agree with lazur. it actually makes sense. and is logical. and based on actual facts

Actually its even lower than that, because you have to take into account all the new people who have joined up, and people who have gotten out, in the 3 year time period the Iraq War has been going on.

But yeah, if you join up now, you're going to spend most of your military carreer in and out of Iraq and Afghanistan.

I can't find a site with exact figures, but I think it's somewhere around 1.4 million, last I heard.

And where you deploy to has a lot to do with which branch you join. For instance, joining the coast guard wouldn't put you in Iraq. Joining the Air Force or the Navy might, but not for long.

November 9th I just reenlisted for another four years in the Navy. As of right now I have 8 years in. I was stationed in San Diego for 5 years aboard USS Constellation(aircraft carrier) I did 3 deployments to the Western Pacific. I have seen and done things I never would have done. On Navy ships teachers come out with us so you can us the GI Bill to go to college. The past 3 years I have been a drill instructor in Jacksonville, Fl. I have been taking classes and getting close to a degree. On January 12th I'll be leaving for Japan my next duty station..........if you want to join the military talk to people who know what they are talking about. Yes some recruiters lie but not all of them. If they promise anything make sure you get it in writing. Make sure you have a plan on what you want out of the military.
....and for those who dont think the uniform gets chicks....you just dont know....

Thanks for serving our country. And thanks for chiming in this subject as someone who actually knows what he's talking about. I take a lot of pride in the fact that I served our country and I would encourage anyone else to do the same.

Thanks again for your service.
