I'm thinking about joing the "Military".

When I was in HS a navy recruiter was a little to intense about having me sign up,total turn off.

Later,I was going to join the air guard, they wanted me to load missiles with a $5K sign on bonus, which would be distributed through some kind of odd time period.. :down.

Somehow my sister got though army basic training,I'm not impressed. The women can't shovel snow.

Just thought I'd share. :yay:
This is the official military thread?

If you do join the military and happen to go to the middle east make sure to respect everyone's culture. I know a few guys that got in big trouble from not doing that. I highly doubt people who join hte military will die we havent had a real combat seen since Vietnam. Sure people died in Panama Mogadishu and Desert Storm but those are just conflicts. I also doubt that you will kill any1 so the military should be good to you. I personally would join the Air force because it is so @#$%in hot if you join hte marines or the army where you are most likely to get stationed

Jackass.

Does calling someone a jackass actually make you feel better? Just curious.

And this board IS, in large part, anti-military. Just look at the responses so far. Most of them have been negative.

The real question is, why would you take that personally? Do you own the SHH boards or something?

There's some good advice here (among with some clearly biased views).

Before you just up and enlist in the Marines, I'd make sure you check out all your options for military service. There are a variety of ways to do it. You can straight up enlist (where they DO pay for college when you get out), you can do reserves (where you pay for college and they pay you back as you go) or you can do college first and either do ROTC while in school (which I think gets you some funds while you're in school, but I don't know for sure how this program works) or you can do school and then OCS (Officer Candididate School) when you're done (here they pay off loans for you and you can receive money for graduate degrees - which depending on which branch may be required if you want to make a career out of the military).

If you don't plan to make the military your career - I wouldn't recommend you bother with the officer options.

If it's just a way to get some cash for school - I'd be hesitant before signing up. It requires a lot of commitment to get that funding and there are other ways to get funding (grants, loans, scholarships, Americorps, Peace Corps, employment that offers education assistance, etc.).

If you are floundering, don't think you're quite ready for college, need some discipline and/or direction in your life, you might want to give the military some serious consideration. I know a number of guys who have served, or are serving, and most consider it an invaluable experience.

When considering it though, also consider what you might want to do with you life. If you're interested in persuing some sort of tech field job, you might be better off in the Air Force or Navy than Marines or Army. It's not that the Marines or Army aren't high tech as well; it's just that right now the Army and Marines need fighting bodies so you're more likely to sent to that (unless you have some special skills/training going in), whereas in the other two you're more likely to be able to on-the-job training in technical fields earlier on. Contrary to what you may be told, you don't get to choose whatever job path you want once you're in.

Also, if you're interested in the Marines, I suggest you talk to the poster USMC here on the Hype!. He can give you realistic advice having been in.

also there are all sorts of programs available to people while they serve. Some of my co workers and I are currently going to college and the military is fitting the bill.

Fitting the bill for whom?

I could use a size 8.

The government is paying for it all...only thing we got to do is pay for books and the onbase campus has lots of used books.

Actually it doesnt, I was merely stating a fact.

Negative yes, and with the current military situation, rightfully so.

I dont take it personally, I think its dumb to throw out such a blanket generalization like that.

EDIT: I dont have a problem with the military, at all. I like many others have friends in the military. I have a problem with military recruiters.

Hmmm.

5 pages and nobody has explained how one "joings" the military.

Aparently there are some matters that the Hype! takes more seriously than typos... they're few and far between, but some. :cwink:

The English language has about 10 million words now. I figured that joing was just a word I never heard of and wanted to know how it was done.

Go joing yourself, Jonty. Repeatedly and with force.

The best advice I've seen.

I joined the Army, got my college money and don't regret the experiences a bit, although I didn't get much civilian job expereince since I wasn't going to make it a career. I did most of my growing up in the Army. BUT, if I had to do all over again, I'd find a civilian job that I wanted to do and pick it's counterpart in the Air Force or Navy. They tend to treat you better and the experience is much more valuable than being a grunt in the Marines or Army. Granted, they both have tech jobs, but they are hard to get into when you go to processing. My advice, if you choose to go Marines or Army, pick out a few Military Occupation Specialties that you want to do, and DO NOT under any circumstances let them talk you out of them. They will say things like, "There aren't any slots in that job," or "There isn't much room for promotion there," and the next thing you know you're on a plane bound for Iraq as a newly minted grunt. Believe me, that is exactly what happened to me during Desert Storm. If they don't let you do what you want, then thank them for their time and ask to be let go. 9 times out of 10 they'll get you what you want. If you want to be a grunt or combat arms, then you'll have no problem. Just keep your head down when you get over there.

The military is what you make it. And you can grow and learn from it if you want to. There are a lot of pointers to ask someone who has been in from avoiding debt to being wary of fellow soldiers wanting to borrow money or your car, so pick their brains. It's a different world in the military.

God, these jokes are so annoying.

Yes, Canada has an active military which happens to be in Afghanistan at the moment. Something like 43 casualties. Including someone who apparently went to my high school at one point or another.

So, yeah, to me? Not funny.

I'm going C. Lee on your irreverent ass:cmad:

43 casualties?

We've been wiped out. We're now defenseless.

I was thinking about joining the military also.
I have this insane desire to put my life in danger.

I blame action movies and Jack Bauer.

Mounties are cops. Who's full dress uniform incedentally is 1000x better than US marine outfits. Khaki tie on khaki shirt WTF-on-a-stick is that already?

USMC said:
No, Only the people that have served in the military should be ale to give C-$ some kind of sound advice about what it means to join the military. Kinda figured that was obvious.
I tried once. Wearing glasses stacks an unfair deck. :down So many damn forums so easy to lose.

the Mounties are our federal police force. our various armed forces are called (surprise :whatever:) the Canadian Army, the Canadian Navy, and the Canadian Air Force.
Actually Canada's military is one organization. With 4 branches, army, navy, air force, and reserves. That's why we only have 1 four leaf general/admiral.

So does anyone here have any experience with the Canadian military:huh:
