Exclusive: Tarsem On War Of The Gods
His intriguing next film?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We talked to director Tarsem Singh recently in anticipation of the DVD release of fantasy oddity The Fall on Monday, and he spilled a few intriguing-sounding beans on his hoped-for next film, War of the Gods. Here's what he had to say.

"It’s turning into, basically, Caravaggio meets Fight Club," he said. "It’s a really hardcore action film done in Renaissance painting style. I want to see how that goes; it’s turned into something really cool. This guy who I really love, who’s the only one person in it right now, is the brother in The Tudors, Henry Cavill. I’m going for a very contemporary look on top of that so I’m kind of going with, you know, Renaissance time with electricity. So it’s a bit like Baz Luhrman doing Romeo + Juliet in Mexico; it’s just talking a particular Greek tale and half contemporising it and telling it."

To say that this sounds so-weird-it's-awesome would be an understatement. Caravaggio was a big influence on Tarsem's Losing My Religion video () and we'd be lying if we said that "Caravaggio meets Fight Club" doesn't sound like just about the best idea ever (although someone should really do "da Vinci meets Halloween" if you ask us).

War of Gods Becomes Dawn of War Source:
Production Weekly November 19, 2009

Production Weekly reports that director Tarsem Singh's War of Gods is now titled Dawn of War and is scheduled to start shooting in Montreal in March.

Henry Cavill ("The Tudors") is expected to play Greek warrior Theseus, who battles against long-imprisoned Titans who are hoping to use the demons to restore their power.

The project was written by Charley and Vlas Parlapanides.

One of the priciest pictures set to shoot here is Dawn of War, a $115-million production starring Henry Cavill from the hit TV series The Tudors. This epic set in ancient Greece is expected to be a special effects-laden film that will, according to director Tarsem Singh, have a real contemporary look to it.

Pre-production on Dawn of War was recently halted so the producers could look into the possibility of shooting the film in 3-D, which would add something like $15 million to the budget. Following the record-breaking success of 3-D hit Avatar, studio executives in Hollywood are more eager than ever to make films in the new state-of-art 3--D.

Tarsem Singh’s DAWN OF WAR In 3D? Yes, Please.
by Bill Graham Posted:February 2nd, 2010 at 11:35 am

Tarsem Singh, best know for producing, writing, and directing the visually stimulating The Fall, has brought the $115-million Montreal-based production of the ancient Greece epic Dawn of War to a screeching halt, according to The Montreal Gazette (via The Playlist). The culprit should come as no surprise: 3D.

The producers are contemplating shooting the film in 3D, a move that would add roughly $15 million to the budget and possibly delay shooting, which was scheduled to begin this month. However, this isn’t your average studio film being thrown an extra dimension. Singh is known for his visuals, which was about the only redeeming quality of his first feature film, The Cell. With lots of special effects and an extra dimension, it should be interesting to see what Singh brings to the table if they move forward with 3D. Meanwhile, Henry Cavill of The Tudors fame is still set to star in the film, which Singh says he is bringing a contemporary style to.

sounds like it could be good. Sounds like a Troy meets COTT. Not surprising they're going 3D.

I'm looking forward to this and COTT, but I think this will be a much better movie. Better director, better lead actor, probably better visuals... can't wait for this one. I wish they would have stuck with "War of the Gods" as the title, but Dawn of War is still pretty good.

At first I thought this just sounded like a Clash of the Titans ripoff, but now Im actually interested in checking this out.

percy jackson, CotT and now this. Anyone sick of Greek mythology yet?

I don't think Hollywood will be anytime soon. You see, it will be a trend. After this God of War will probably get made.

Im surprised they havn't made it yet, what with all these video game movie adaptations that have been made.

percy jackson, CotT and now this. Anyone sick of Greek mythology yet?

Yeah, seriously. What do they think these are? Superhero movies? :hehe:

In all seriousness, Percy Jackson isn't a Greek Mythology movie anymore than the upcoming Thor film is a Norse Mythology movie. It's set in modern times, it centers on new characters... although the Greek gods are integral to the story, it's still a contemporary story.

I just realized the article said contemporary. So is this going to be set in modern times?

I don't think Hollywood will be anytime soon. You see, it will be a trend. After this God of War will probably get made.
God of war is shelved atm. I'm guessing due to the the mythology based flicks as of late. But if COTT is successful, maybe it will get made. I hope so.

No, I'm not tired since I didn't see percy (modern day anyway). So it'll be COTT for me :awesome:, which has the period set I like. :woot:

What I've heard is that it's going to be set in Ancient Times but incorporate some modern day elements to it. That could work or it could really suck... I'm not sure which. Although if it ends up like Julie Taymor's Titus, it could be awesome. Unfortunately though, it would also flop, because very few people would "get" it.

I wasn't a big fan of Titus. I thought it had a genius to it & the visuals were wonderful, but it felt disjointed due to the period jumping. the ending was great though. Brutal story.

Ditto. And i don't think that Titus was really one of those movies that you need to "get" to enjoy it IMO. I did get it and i still thought the movie sucked.

I just hope that Tarsem makes doesn't go too artsy-fartsy on this movie. I do love The Fall but it was anything but commercial and definately something for a specific group .
Dawn Of War is a commercial movie and i think that he should make it as one , just not something that could compromise his artistic vision.
Also based on the budget i'd go for a PG-13 rating however don't movies that shoot in Canada also get a tax incentiv. If tha was the case , the budget could get low enough to warrant a R rating.

Shooting was suppose to happen next month but that's a delay. Do you guys know why? 3D of course!

Tarsem Singh’s DAWN OF WAR In 3D?

Pre-production on Tarsem's "Caravaggio meets 'Fight Club'" epic "Dawn Of War" has been halted as producers for the film are contemplating whether or not to shoot the film in 3D. Already budgeted at $115 million, if they do decide to make cinema-goers wear those glasses, it will add another $15 million to the bottom line. Tarsem is already deep into pre-production stages, having set up offices at La Cité du Cinéma in Montreal back in the late fall, and filming was set to begin this month. If it's decided the film will go the 3D route, there's no word yet on what kind of delays this might cause, but we would imagine several scenes and sequences will have to go back to the drawing board.

Tarsem is an amazing visual director, I just wish he had some better stories.

This one has potential (but so did his others). I want him to succeed. He would make a kickass Inhumans movie.

Well Hollywood has found its next big thing. But first let's see how COTT and this does at the B.O. After Gladiator ancient Grekko-Roman epics were the in-thing. Then Troy underperformed and Alexander out right bombed.

This sounds a little bit like 300 with a little more artistic sensibility to me. But we shall see. We shall see.

The constant delays and no new casting announcements for a year make me think that this movie may never be made. If Clash of the Titans doesn't perform well at the box office, you can bet that this project will be scrapped.

percy jackson, CotT and now this. Anyone sick of Greek mythology yet?

You mean after all of the vampire/werewolves/zombie movies? No. Not really, espically not after only like 2, one of whic isnt even out yet.

i'm with you Primal Slayer.

I do think the mods should change this thread to "Dawn of War" since there was a title change..

Tarsem has an amazing visual eye... every frame looks like a painting. I dont know if its his doing or his cinematographer.

cant wait to see what he does with that huge a budget

infact, I think there's a number of people who WANT more werewolf movies, so it's ironic to say that there's too many of them out there. hahahahahahah..

The problem with werewolf movies is that no one knows how to MAKE werewolf movies. The new Wolf Man film was one of the stronger efforts of the genre in recent years. Other than that, what do we have? Dogsh** like Blood and Chocolate and films like New Moon and Underworld that also include vampires since no one knows how to make werewolves intriguing.

Although Dog Soldiers was pretty cool. It had its plot holes and all, but that was still the most enjoyable werewolf movie I've seen in the last 10 years or so.
