TIH's performance on DVD has been very solid, LTD. I'm not sure about BRD sales, but these current DVD numbers make TIH a success for Marvel on it's first 2 projects, and while IM was a runaway success for Marvel this year, the much more critical benchmark is to achieve success on every project, not attain IM levels. As it stands, the movie took in $262 million WW, so using standard split of 50% for Marvel/Paramount (it’s probably a little bit more), you’re looking at $131 million from the box office. You then add on the 68.2 million, and you’re looking at $199 million. I know Marvel doesn’t get 100% of DVD sales, but I’m not including BRDs or futures DVD sales. That’s about $200 million to cover cost for production and other cost. This doesn’t include toys and other merchandising, and it doesn’t cover TV rights and other streams of revenues, TIH is probably going to deliver millions in profit to Marvel. When compared to Iron Man, TIH wasn’t that impressive, but since when is millions in profits not a good thing? Quite honestly, the mild success for Marvel is a great opportunity to validate their business model on how they can achieve profitability on a movie, even if it’s not a run-away success. Based on this data, I can see absolutely no technical reason for Marvel not to proceed with a sequel. Now…they have to get things smoothed out with Norton, but once again, there is an opportunity for Marvel and Norton to work together on a script, over a long period, while shooting the Avenger’s project. …TIH 2 in 2012 is a very very promising option, imho.
