Independence Day 2? - Part 1

I like the Rock and can enjoy most of Bay's other films, but I ****ing hate Pain and Gain. Such a stupid ****ing movie with some of the most obnoxious character Bay has ever put on film.
It is easily his best film imo. It is the one film he made that I feel like got the joke. The movie is very funny, has a wicked sense of humor (the Rock's BBQ still makes me laugh) and is shot very well.

Couldn't agree more.

Same here buddy.

Normally I hate Bay, but "Pain and Gain" is an underappreciated gem of a movie. It's very kinetic and snappy (thanks to Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely). I watch it any time it's on cable.

The cast had excellent chemistry imo. Still cracks me up every time the scene comes on where they're trying to kidnap Viktor Kershaw at his house around sundown and The Rock says something like "but he's having a shabbat!". Then there's that scene in the sex toy factory, "these things were weird .... aaaand awesome!" as he smacks the fake ass. LOLOL

Why? Cause the original Independence Day film is like that to me. That film and Jurassic World might both have different Rottentomatoes scores, but i don't find their quality different. Was a fresh rating too much to ask? Seriously?

Not saying Rottentomatoes is always right, but with these blockbusters, i think their scores usualy give a decent perspective on what to expect. Being at 42% this early in the game is usualy a bad sign.

Yeah I think a fresh rating was too much too ask. No offense, I think it was kinda silly that you expected ID2 to get one. It's by the same director and the first one barely had a fresh rating. In fact only 2 of Emmerich's movies have gotten a fresh rating and both are at 61% and the latest one was 16 years ago.

Besides, a fresh rating will not necessarily mean you wont like this. I dont see why having a fresh rating will affect you in anyway. But hey, do you

I'd take The Rock and Pain and Gain easily over anything Emmerich has done, even if I love the Patriot.

I actually like a fair amount of Bay films, but I don't like the Rock. I was so bored watching it.

Emmerich has some I like, but I think Bay is "better"

I'd take the original ID4 over Pain and Gain, or anything Bay has done pretty easily.

It's not exactly a great movie, doesn't quite hold up but it's got a 90s cheese charm to it and some pretty iconic visuals and impressive VFX for the time. And Jeff Goldblum and Will Smith in their prime, playing pretty well off each other.

Pain and Gain just makes me wish I was watching a Coen Brothers movie instead. It's not bad, but meh.

Well I just got back and I really liked it. Not as good as the original but still very enjoyable. If you like the first one you'll probably like this.

Looks like Finding Dory is gonna hold onto #1 this week.

That doesn't bode well. Guess nobody was expecting a third Independence Day anytime soon.

Um, Variety isn't saying that it's a disappointing start for the film. For those expecting Jurassic World numbers, yes. But, with all considered -

Right now, Fox, the studio orchestrating the invasion, is banking on an opening of $50 million when it hits theaters on Friday. It’s a solid start, but it won’t be enough to displace “Finding Dory” from the top of the box office heap. The Disney smash is looking at a second weekend of roughly $70 million after it shattered records for an animated film debut, opening at $135.1 million.

I doubt they were paid to say the start was solid, news outlets typically bank for negative news and phrasing.

Question:

Are there under water alien crafts in the movie? Reading the comic and those designs are awesome! But, don't want to get hopes up about seeing them if those aren't in it.

Prequel comics tend to be misleading.

Prequel comics tend to be misleading.

Depends, sometimes they provide information - sometimes don't. This one gave at least character background on General Adams. Would have loved to see those ship designs though, a really cool idea. Comic reminded me of 'The Abyss' in a way or 'Alien' underwater.

I'm pretty sure no one expected ID4 to take the #1 spot over Dory/Pixar.

Relax.

Depends really, are people by tommorow going to be dying to see a summer popcorn film? We havent had a popcorn film since civil war came out that drew in the masses. Im not expecting jurassic world at all but 80-100 mil range would be good.

I think people are focusing/worrying too much on the critics

Well if they aren't a concern, why hide the movie from them?

Don't know. Don't really care. They could be a concern to the studio but I don't see why they should be to anyone else. I really am baffled by people worrying about the RT response.

I mean I get some reasons why people get concerned with RT scores with stuff like X-Men, DC, Marvel, etc. because there have been times in the past that critics generally liked the movies. So if the movie has a bad RT score then it's more worrying.

But even Independence Day barely has a fresh rating. Roland Emmerich only has 2 movies (the last one 16 years ago) that cracked a fresh rating and they both sit at 61%. Why did people expect this to be any different? They don't like the director's work. They barely like the first ID. It's kinda silly to worry about reviews.

They're hiding it from critics, ok...nothing I can do about that. If I go into the theater and I at least like the action and the characters don't annoy me, then when it comes to this movie series I'm fine.

I don't expect greatness from the ID series and I don't get why people do. It's a fun as hell, entertaining ride. That's what the first one was and while I don't expect this to be as good, if it is fun I'm satisfied.

Now if all the reviews come out and say things like: The CGI is bad, the action isn't good, if you like the first one you'll hate this one, the characters are as bad as in Transformers 2, then I'll worry. Either way I'm seeing it this weekend

EDIT: Besides there are films with good reviews I dislike, there are films with bad reviews that I do like. I can't be pressed until I see it myself and I say: Well I agree or disagree with critics.
And this isnt one of those "screw the critics what do they know things." I generally have no problem with critics. How does the saying go: "Everybody is a critic" I'm just saying I didn't expect critics to like this movie and I don't see why anyone else did

Yeah, the Variety review complimented VFX and compared them favorably to the plastic-y CGI you see in a lot of superhero movies today. That's the best thing I could've possibly read about this movie. I'm going for the spectacle first, nostalgia second, everything else....distant third.

Exactly

I mean even when I look at Emmerich's other action movies I've seen (I havent seen 2012 in full, Stargate or 10,000 BC) he always delivers on spectacle save for White House Down...which on second rewatch on FX I didn'y dislike as much as I did the first time.

I mean I don't care if people react to critics stuff. I like critics honestly. They've saved me for a lot of crap. I don't get why people hate critics so much. I don't get what that does for people

But for this I don't see why people care with this project
