Independence Day 2? - Part 1

Jurassic World had a charming lead. Sort of like Will Smith in the original. No one in this really qualifies.

It's interesting how Jurassic World was able to cash in on nostalgia and have a huge box office while this looks lucky to break $200M in the US.

JW was part of an established franchise, and a continuation of the story. ID:R was an attempt at a sequel 20 years after the first one. Plus, we rarely get movies about dinosaurs, whereas alien invasions are pretty much standard fare by now.

I SEE SPIDEY had a great response to my question a couple of pages back as to why this film is no Jurassic World.

The moment they couldn't secure Will Smith, they should have just ceased development and moved on. This was never going to feel like (or work as) a true sequel without the star of the original.

Not even Goldblum?

You need all the ingredients. ;)

Like making The Force Awakens with Hamill and Fisher but WITHOUT Harrison Ford. Granted the Star Wars brand name will print money under any circumstances but the film we got wouldn't have been nearly as effective without Ford's involvement.

I recall that originally, Michael B. Jordan was initially offered the role of Dylan Hiller. He dodged a bullet but he would have definitely given the new cast a much need dose of charm and charisma.

And he would've ended up being with nobody, haha. It was dumb. He just stood there at the end, all alone and single still.

I think it would have been a waste of his talent. He probably dodged a bullet here.

"Not even Will Smith can save this movie"

He probably would have had some nice one-liners but he wouldn't be enough to save the movie.

Poor Dylan. :(

They should have made Dylan and Patricia Whitmore a couple and completely eliminated Liam Hemsworth's character from the story.

I did like Maika Monroe, though. :hrt: One of the few bright spots for me.

You needed both.

You know why they didn't right?

"Middle 'Merica won't understand Jungle Fever!" -- Emmerich, creator of comic book movies.

You know who would have been great main characters in this movie? The kids of Randy Quaid's character grown up. In a perfect world, you have them, Goldblum, Smith, Spiner, and some new good characters along with that third alien species idea and you could have had something worth making.

It's weird how sloppy this movie was. I mean, I sorta liked it (a solid C) but after 20 years, after 15 drafts and all of the writers involved (There's been more than the 4 credited), this is the best they came up with? Or is it that Emmerich is..not that talented?

So I guess there was no "resurgence" of interest in Independence Day then, huh? :rimshot:

Probably a combination of both.

Emmerich peaked with the first Independence Day. His track record since has been awful. He's probably even worse than Bay at this point.

I think I'm the only one who liked White House Down, but agree, everything else has been awful.

Would this have worked better if it was about another race coming to Earth looking for help and unlike humanity who reverse engineered the ID aliens tech these aliens are part of an actual alliance ala Alan dean foster books with faster than light drive capability?

Just saw this. It wasn't even fun enough to qualify as "dumb fun." Just dumb. The new leads were boring as hell, and for such a big expensive movie, it looked surprisingly cheap - like it was only filmed in a grand total of 5 rooms and switched to green screen whenever anyone stepped outside. Weird. They need to stop trying to make Liam Hemsworth happen. Seriously. He doesn't even have a fraction of the charisma of his brother, and Chris has enough trouble carrying movies as it is, but at least he has potential and has proven he can be a decent lead in the right role. Liam brings NOTHING to the table.

WHD was fun to watch, but I couldn't call it a good movie. The special effects were especially bad. It's like Emmerich forgot how make realistic looking explosions.

I don't think Chris Hemsworth has trouble carrying movies so much as he has trouble picking out good movies to star in. The problem is rarely him, and when he's got good material (like in Rush), he is more than capable.

Liam, yeah, he's got the charisma of a wet blanket.

I think it would have worked better if they'd just made the "interstellar war" movie they spend this whole film setting up. ID2 is two hours of world building, and while I'm always into that kind of thing, I'm also the guy who owns all those Christopher Tolkien books detailing every comma, elipse and eraser mark JRRT made in all the drafts of LotR. Most people don't want that, they just want more actual stories in Middle Earth. Same with ID2: don't sit there telling me about all this cool stuff out there while we muddle through a less-well-done version of the original movie. Just go!
