Harvey Dent was originally going to be introduced in Batman Begins but they replaced him with the character of Rachel Dawes.

According to this taken from Wikipedia:

The writers considered having Harvey Dent in the film, but replaced him with the new character Rachel Dawes when they realized, "we couldn’t do him justice".

I assume the friendship between Bruce Wayne and Harvey Dent was going to be originally fully established in Batman Begins.

It would have been interesting to see how it would have been if this idea was actually used and besides I didn't like the Rachel Dawes character, it would have been better if they introduced Talia Al Ghul, instead.

Man if thats true, that is really disappointing. I would have loved if they would have stretched out the Dent storyline longer to really establish a relationship between Dent and Bruce. I had hoped that we'd get a small glipse of Two Face at the end of TDK, or even kept him under wraps for the third film. Now, with him dead, a major character that had alot invested in him during tdk is lost.

not really about BB, but about bale :

Two of his most famous character's names have a difference of only one letter. Bateman and Batman.

I agree. I would've rathered though, that they established the friendship in the first movie and then had him turn into Two Face far earlier in TDK. I felt cheated out of two face in that movie. I felt they could've done much more with him.

Also, Bale auditioned for the role of Robin in Batman Forever.

I like that story, but Bale has said it's not true unfortunately.

It would have been funny, however unlikely, if Joshua Jackson had done a storming audition for Nolan and won the part of Batman. He would have been acting alongside his former girlfriend from Dawson's Creek, Katie Holmes. You could have watched Dawson's Creek as a big Smallville-like build up if that had happened.

I read that Viggo Mortensen kb'd the part of Ras, that would have been interesting. He probably wanted to do some naked fighting in a steamroom kind of movies before embarking on another world known franchise again.

There was also no need for Harvey dent because how would they incorporate the all so necessary love story that made is so tragic.

Keep in mind Nolan had a lot more invested in The Joker coming back at the time they finished TDK.

I think 2 Face should have been in BB as well, even just planting the seed.

Bale revealed somewhere that he is contracted to 3 films. I wonder if there is any definative proof that Heath was contracted to the third film.

hm. i'm curious about that too. i wonder if they're going to try and replace him?

The only misstep with the Rachel Dawes Character was the recast... but that's just me... I hate recasts.... I wish Maggie had played her in BB and TDK... but otherwise.... I think Harvey only in TDK worked just fine and I think Rachel became very important to Bruce, as a stable figure in his life, a confidant, love interest, and a great way to make the Joker "bada**" by letting him blow her away. LOL. If Harvey had been Bruce's childhood friend, TDK would of been sooooooooo different, since Bruce would of had so much more investment in Harvey, as a best buddy, then him being the "white knight" who he was trusting to save Gotham so he could quit being Batman. I think, within Nolan's world, Harvey worked better as a "savior" to Bruce than a "oh that's my best buddy"....it was a very "adult" connection that Bruce had with Harvey. He looked up to him, not as a friend, but as a trusted professional.

I don't think that Bruce should have known Dent since childhood. That would sort of be like the Hush storyline. I wouldn't have minded that a returning Bruce Wayne finds a sort of kinship with an up and coming Dent.

Yep. I think they managed to do justice to Harve Dent/Two Face in the film. It worked very well, and getting him in the first movie it would have felt kind of crowded. It wasn't the right time.

It would have not been crowded, he was going to be the D.A. in Batman Begins but they replaced him with Rachel Dawes, a newly created D.A. character, who they later ended up writing her as the love interest.

Anyway, I'm fine with how Nolan used the Harvey Dent character in TDK but if he was introduced in Batman Begins, it would have been better.

I heard that Jake Gyllenhaal was David Goyer's first choice for Batman/Bruce Wayne, until he saw Christian Bale's screen-test. If Jake was cast, I think it's safe to say we wouldn't have gotten Maggie. However, I think (would hope) that we would still have gotten Heath Ledger, despite the inevitable "Broke-Bat Mountain" jokes.

Man, it would've been odd to see Dent and Wayne making out

At that time, they did not think about giving Bruce Wayne/Batman a love interest but since they made the District Attorney female, they probably thought that they should just write her as his love interest.

Maybe he could have played Rachael's boss who died in BB.

Of course making him not die.

I don't know....that's crazy talk!

I'm not sure where Dent would have fit into the Begins story. Rachel's boss was a nothing character in it anyway.

Dent could of been played off as a DA helping Batman and Gordon take down the mob like in Batman Year One comic. Then in TDK he gets close to the end of locking up all the mobsters but then he gets half his face scarred up by Joker and becomes Two Face.

Exactly my opinion on it.
