What makes it faulty logic? A lot of actors are cast into their roles because of past performances that may have been similar to the character. I'd say moreso than an actor getting cast for a role that originally wouldn't have been considered. My opinion, neither method is faulty, they are simply different methods that have both proven success and failure.

And not only has Dicaprio's role as Howard Hughes led me to believe he would be an awesome Stark, but also his role as Frank Abagnale Jr. in Catch Me If You Can.

a performance and a character are 2 completely different things.

I've been saying Joaquin Phoenix for almost a year and I still think he should take this role. "Walk The Line" made me feel even stronger about it. He has the discipline to take the role seriously and really study-up for it.

I'm also liking the suggestion of Obed Fehr. Great actor poised for a break-out role. You want someone who is not an A-list star but can own the role. And either of these actors could truly make it their own. And while both are easily recognizable in their many movies and being known as good actors they still are not on the top level of celebrity.

Yeah, I could see Oded Fehr, plus on screen the guy is really likeable, even as a terrorist in Sleeper Cell. So I would actually be glad if someone as cool as Oded got the part, he deserves the recognition.

You can't have a distracting immitation of an American accent for a lead in a movie this big. I'm clueless as to how people overlook how that guy talks when it comes to this role.

A performance is not similar to a "character". 2 characters can be similar. 2 performances can be similar. But you're misguidedly avoiding the distinction to support an idea, which leads to the ideas lack of cogency.

BT18 , who knows maybe he could pull off an american accent he just hasn't had to in any of his films.

Ok I see your point now. Then in that case, the characters of Howard Hughes and Frank Abagnale Jr. are similar to Tony Stark's character. Thus why I think it is a logical idea to suggest Leonardo DiCaprio as Tony Stark.

I vote for Joaquin Phoenix for the part of Tony Stark/Iron Man. He's proven he can do serious roles(Walk the Line) and be a hero(Ladder 49) and I said he'd also be a good Two-Face because he has proven he can play a good villian.(Gladiator)

Iron Man is my favorite Marvel superhero.
My vote originally went for Tom Cruise, but since he isn't gonna do it, i thought about Karl Urban or Jerry O'Connell.
Maybe it would be a good choice to cast an unknown as Iron Man like Singer did with Superman Returns.

The truth is, I'm afraid that there won't be a Iron Man movie. Atleast not in 2007. Because it's already almost 2006, and they haven't even signed on a director (Cassavettes isn't final) or a lead actor (should be Joaquin), so, it's looking bad.

I have no problem waiting for an Iron Man film if it means it will be done right. The script that they had sounded like a rehash of the Hulk, with his father being the villian. They'll have nothing to worry about as far as director or cast if they get a good script to work with.

I agree, as much as I want a Iron Man movie, lets get the script right first than make the movie,I really wasn't happy with the Hulk rehash and was happy Marvel scraped it. I wouldn't expect a Iron Man movie until as early as 2008 or 2009

I don't think Wahlberg is the logical way to go for an authentic Eastern Establishment heir to industry. He also doesn't at all have a reminiscent face of most drawings of Tony.

Joaquin is among the top 2 or 3 best actors his age, although I just don't know if he either looks like most renditions of the character or would want to play someone with a substance abuse problem this soon after his own public difficulties in that area AND his brothers public tragedy with addiction.

That's true I guess about Joaquin, but if he did signon as Tony Stark/Iron man, I know he could do it.

If this project takes another couple of years to get off the ground, Orlando might have the age and charisma for it. Right now, I'd love to see someone like Marton Csokas do it.

Orlando Bloom? He's a good actor and there possibly is a superhero movie out there for him, but I definitely don't think he should be Ironman. I could see him doing Ironlad though. ;) I know bad joke.

Well...I've stated here often that I think Joaquin Phoenix would be a great Tony Stark. Unfortunately, his recent set-back may dissuade him from taking on a comic character who is an alcoholic. However, I'm holding out hope that because of his families stuggles with addiction that would move him toward this kind of role if it were offered to him.

But really all that is secondary to his health. Let's hope he gets the help he needs.
