I'm not someone who's all big into the anti-BND movement (I bought most of the run until Slott came on full time), and I stuck with ASM through all of JMS's ups and downs, but I'm just not enjoying it right now.

I don't know if it's the art (Ramos just doesn't fit Spider-Man, IMO) or something else, but I just can't bring myself to buy it routinely or how Slott often prefers short 2-3 issue arcs as opposed to big, sprawling arcs, but I just can't get into it.

I think "big" is subjective here... I'd like to think that most of the current readers are "fans of the current writing"...

I like Slott's mixture of one & done's, his 2/3 parters & his 6 part epics... brings an old school feel to the book, but I get that this style of wrting is not everybody's cup o'tea...

I do find that Slott has introduced a LOT of corney 60's style dialogue... maybe that's what's putting you off... but it doesn't bother me at all... but I have noticed it opn occasion.

:yay:

Aloha,
It seems that some Spidey fans are more controversy oriented than good old stories oriented.Things are going very smoothly right now for Spidey so there's no fan OUTRAGE:cmad:
I think the sales of Spidey since Slott shows that people are liking the direction. We're just not mired in fans being pissed off at something right now. It feels funny:whatever:

I think it may have something to do with the overall continuity too.

The one thing I definitely didn't like about BND was how they through out so much of Peter's history. But, at the same time, they did interject A LOT of new stuff into his world; Harry being back, his new circle of friends, etc. Since Big Time, there seems to be less of a focus on Peter Parker's overall continuity and more of a focus on just new reader accessible superhero stories.

Normally, I'm okay with that. Wolverine and the X-Men, Incredible Hulk, Captain America all introduced pretty new status quos for their characters. But the stories happening in those books just seem more timeless and epic for some reason.

Slott has a big year ahead of him... "Ends of the Earth" promises to be as big as Spider-Island, with NO cross-overs (yay), and that'll lead up to ASM #700 at the end of the year...

:yay:

I'm not a big fan of Marvel right now. I dropped Amazing Spider-Man because it comes out twice a month at 3.99. Once a month at 3.99 and I can do that, however, TWICE a month? No.

It also has to do with the direction that Slott has gone with the book as well. I've really enjoyed most of what he's done and Spider-Island was pretty solid. However, didn't understand why Carlie Cooper had to remind Spider-Man HOW to defeat The Vulture...a villain that he's faced easily a 100 times.

Maybe the Carlie Cooper garbage is editorial but either way...it's bugged me. The 3.99 price point with twice a month shipping started bugging me.

So, for now I'm going to enjoy not having that baggage and have more comic book goodness because dropping Spider-Man frees me up to pick up a couple of the new Image books coming out, Brian K. Vaughn's Saga and the new Bulletproof Coffin miniseries.

I'm sure Slott will do a good job but I'm no longer supporting Marvel's high price point and their double shipping and .1 garbage.

I kinda hope Dan Slott will post in here just to make me feel guilty about criticizing his book. :o

Hi. :-)

No need to feel guilty, sir.

Not every book is for every reader. And if the Big Time run isn't doing it for you, there are lots of other titles out there. Heck, there are a lot of other SPIDER-related titles out there (Venom, Scarlet Spider, Avenging Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, New Avengers)... and maybe one of those might be to your liking. It's all good. :-)

For the other poster who dropped the title because of the 2x's a month shipping schedule-- I get that too. An eight dollar a month commitment to follow a title like ASM can feel pretty steep (especially w/ the economy the way it is). For our part the ASM team really tries to pack in as much content as we can into those 2 issues a month. We shoot for smaller arcs (3 parters, 2 parters, and done-in-ones) and save the 6 parters for big, sprawling epics. That way, at the end of the year, where most books give you just 2 or 3 (six part) stories-- we've given you closer to 10 to 12!

If the price is that big of an issue, I suggest checking out the subscription deals that Marvel offers at their site.

Hah. Awesome of you to post, Dan.

Aloha,
Great to have your response Dan.I'm enjoying your work. And yes, there is no better price for Amazing Spider-Man than through a Marvel subscription.I repeat

ASM is...ok. I gotta say, I prefer Scarlet Spider.

I think the reason Dan's ASM run is working despite editorial mucking with things is because Dan is here (and in other places...I saw your posts on that Crawlspace story about you recently, Dan) listening to all of us ***** and moan about stuff we don't like. It really does look like he has worked to fix things that have been messed up.

I mean really, how many creators get down to our level and listen to our grievances right now?

If you look at the history of his posts, it really does suggest that this is indeed Dan Slott... Dan has a history with on-line fan interaction, so I have no reason to doubt it's him at this point.

Though I wish he'd respond to my recent PM... :cmad: :cmad: :cmad:

Wow. A subscription is significantly cheaper...almost half the price. I may have to hook up my Spidey book that way.

I buy digital.

I'm screwed for discounts. :(

Same I use the Comixology app. One of the only reasons I bought the first 4 issues of the Big Time arc is because it was 2 dollars each. btw I read the first issue of Big Time on the first Sunday of November. My mind was blown. But now every month I see new issues of ASM that I know I can't get because it costs a lot and I am afraid to spend my money so quickly.

If I had an iPad I probably would be going all digital as well. For now I enjoy having the actual comic in my hand and going with the Marvel subscription. So, looks like I'll be back on board with ASM.

You know what I'd suggest trying on comixology? Slott's Arkham Asylum miniseries.

That was an awesome story.

Agreed. I picked those issues up at a con for a dollar each and it's a GREAT story. Also has some really amazing artwork by Ryan Sook. Slott would definitely write a fantastic Batman series.

That was probably the best thing he's ever written. It's just really put together, thought out and fun.

I dropped the book after Grim Hunt. Read Spider-Island when the trade came out and did not care for it at all. Ends of the Earth doesn't look too appealing either. Honestly I'm not missing the book which is kinda sad.

And that is why there are sites like mailordercomics.com

Marvel's killed any enjoyment I once had for the character.

I missed Spider-Man horribly after OMD and tried jumping on with Big Time. While the ideas were good I just couldn't get into Dan's portrayal of the character. It still felt too regressed for my tastes. So I reluctantly dropped it again and I'm finding that the more time passes the less I miss the character. While Spider-Man was my favorite character for ten or fifteen years I realized that I just didn't much care for him anymore. I still love his stuff prior to OMD but those get old reading over and over for my Spidey fixes and eventually I just got bored of him. He stopped being good when Straczynski left. I'm sure I'll eventually give it another go but I'm finding I don't actually care to.

The time might come where I actually drop comics before I try the title again. Marvel's handling of Spider-Man and other comics through the years has just tainted my enjoyment of their titles. I'm buying for the most part out of habit right now. I used to buy around $130 a month of Marvel titles. I've dropped most of that save the few titles I do enjoy and then with Marvel's double shippings and all that I'm becoming more tainted with even those titles I DO like. Honestly, I'm just looking for jumping off points as often as I can.

while i like how he is written and his new job, I am still having a hard time buying the book as the spider-man i grew up with. It just feels more like a ultimate universe sometimes with the Peter I grew up with giving way to one learning the same lessons i have already seen him learn with friends who already died. I ill say altleast its the only place showcasing his genius and leadership rather then the useless wise cracking teenager he is portrayed as in all the Avenger books.
