Superman Returns Is Lex Luthor a psychotic in this film?

why would they ignore Hackman's portrayal if this is supposed to be a sequel to the second film?

Because STAS Lex is a million better than Hackman Lex? Seriously they can just say Lex matured after these years from the "wacky" criminal he was in the first movies, to a calm, cool, sociopath, like he was in STAS.

Thats a crappy explanation. He was insane and then he became mature?

You may as well just pick up the DCAU/STAS DVDS and find comfort in them.

Neither of them thinks of themselves as evil, I think. But definitely have to know that when they break the law, that qualifies them as crimminals. STM lex knows it and is proud of it. They're both proud of themselves. They're above everyone mentally and want power over everything and know that they can get it if they want to, except for one annoying guy in blue tights who likes to get in the way every time.

Anyway, we're getting hackman's lex sans the Otis. That's not a bad thing to me. If he's acting too silly though, I won't like it.

While I love Hackman's portrail of Lex Luthor (come on it's HACKMAN!), his Lex was just to darn "cute", ya know what I mean.. He wasn't scary at all, and I couldn't see any psychotic parts within him.. he was just funny and cool in his delievery of line's and such.. That's where Spacey's Luthor will be different.. He'll definitly have his psychotic moments where he's S-C-A-R-Y! He's grown bitter and vengeful... He'll be great... if there's ONE thing that I'm 110% sure of regarding this picture, then it's the fact that after people have seen the film, they'll all say "Kevin Spacey ROCKED!".. that's the least, and I'll put money on that one.

So you want Lex to act like Dick Dastardly in the movie? Because that's what Hackman Lex was, Dick Dastradly.

I didn't care for Hackmans Lex either, but I also realize that Spacey is much more capable of playing psychotic without sounding like a corny B-movie villain.

STAS Lex broke the law, because he thought he was above it, he didn't think he was criminal, he just thought the laws didn't apply to him. Hackman Lex broke the law because he was evil for the sake of being evil, which is why he was a silly character.

Lex being psychotic is silly, that makes personality too like someone like the Joker or someone else who is "choatic evil". Lex should be calm and in control, a "lawful evil" type, that's what seperates him from other villains like the Joker.

I think Spaceys take on Lex will please almost everyone. While I liked the Dini/Timm vision of Lex as a Hitler Trump type villian, I think Spacey will throw in his own take on the character. Hell, the guy has been mentioned for the role since the mid-90's.

Well he's based on Pre-Crisis Luthor,so its not completely out of character. And it still wouldnt make any sense for him to have such a drastic change in disposition without some reasonable explanation.

An actor can really only work with the material they arer provided with, if Lex is written as sinister and scarey, Kevin will play him as sinister and scarey, if Lex comes off as silly and over the top, that's how Spacey will play him.

Yeah, but Pre crisis Luthor was about as threatening a ham sandwich and about as deep as a puddle. I expect a better villain from Spacey and Singer.

well,this is what we're getting.

Where's the proof, how will Spacey's Lex be any more threatening then Hackman's Lex if they are still writing him as an silly, over the top, goofy joke character.

I think the "silly" scenes in the trailer are just him exspressing his glee as Supermans potential demise at his hands. He's not the Joker, he just see's his plan coming together, and is cutting loose.

I hope so, he should come as cool and control in most stituations and then perhaps express such glee in private. That would be acceptable.

That questioned will be answered when you see the movie yourself.

well I think it's pretty much established in the topps cards that he's the same wig wearing con-man with a touch of lofty elegance and showmanship like hackman.

Look at every picture of the guy from the film in character. That "I want to hear you say it" part in the trailer is probobly the only part of the movie you will see him with a smile.

I believe your worries are groundless. You want confrimation, read the spoiler filled novel thread. He's not "perky" like he was in that ONE PART of the trailer throughout the whole film.

Okay, that's good to know, because it seemed from the trailer that Spacey would be like the Super Friends Lex Luthor.

Really? I actually got the opposite idea. He`s nothing like Hackman`s. Just wait and see.

God, I hope not, that would really suck.

Why do all comic book characters have to be sociopathic?

I get the feeling it's something done to give comics a false sense of legitimacy.

^^^^ The man makes an astounding point! That is a super good question
