For all the years I have been on this board, the rumours about WB/DC movie projects are always the funniest and tend the spark the most conversation. Simply because a lot of them dont get made (Superman 5, Burton's Superman, Batman 5, Batman Year One, Superman vs. Batman, The other Superman projects, A Supergirl remake, Jack Black's Green Latern Teen Titans, Super Max/Green Arrow project, The Flash, Wonder Woman, Superman vs. Batman......and now the JL?). A lotta of them are rumours, a lotta of them are movies caught in development hell, a lot of them are movies that sound like rumours that should be caught in development hell.
But with the stream of news and rumours about the Justice League film (which I dont think need to be repeated here for the sanity of all) it seems we literally are getting the penultimate amalgamation of all stories.
Many of you, like myself have been wondering why the studio would push a film like this so soon. While some of you have brought the notion that this is to launch other DC projects, I'm more incline to believe that this the WB rushing a project before the impending and often speculative strike that may go into effect in Hollywood soon.
Indeed this is what many news outlets are saying about once shelved and under develop projects are suddenly getting a release date to avoid the uncertainty of what the industry will look like from other studios.
That's one just aspect, but then something else hit me today as I was on the net....
The reports have also stated that the WB still has all intentions to continue with Nolan and Singer's Batman/Superman franchises. We've all seen the recent reports at the Superman boards, that the studio loved Singer's pitch for the sequel and that all systems are still go for a Summer 2009 release. Yet we're hearing the exact same thing about Justice League.
The Exact same thing...
Has no one then stop to consider the idea that Superman: Man of Steel and Justice League will be both coming out the same summer then?
If that's not enough, I saw this article this morning and posted about it in the Batman boards: http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Rumored-Release-Schedule-For-Batman-3-6256.html
Winter 2009 for a Batman release? Now it should be noted everyone who is reporting this is acknowleging its a rumour and maybe just a possibilty. But what intrests me is that there saying its crew gossip. If anyone is going to be effected by the strike its the crew of the films. I'm actually inclined to be believe that crew members who return to franchise films are thinking about the strike and what to do should it happen. If that is the case is Nolan or the studio thinking maybe shooting back to back or weighing there options? I for one actually feel like Batman works as a winter movie, though not neccessairly so soon for 2009.
What happens if the studio is thinking this. What happens if Dark Knight preforms better than its predecssor ( which it should) and exceed expectations ( given its release date, it might...) and the studio wants to make sure they get another one soon before the strike.
And then it hit me. Should the WB greenlight this ( and as seen from the past, if any studio isnt afraid of going ahead with big franchise moves damning any risk, its the Bugs Bunny boys up in Burbank...). Warners 2009 schedule would look like this:
Watchmen-Spring 2009
Superman: Man of Steel- Summer 2009
Justice League- Summer 2009
Harry Potter- Fall/Winter 2009
Batman 3- Winter 2009
And that's just the movies I know from the studio. Would they really throw all there big franchises or prospectus franchises in one year, just to avoid a strike and milk there profits? Is that even a good thing knowing that maybe 40-60% of that list is going to be rushed? Are they then doing more hurt to the long term portfolio of what the studios has?
Again given how all these stories of studios rushing flicks out for '09 and WB's history of approaching films (Supes vs. Bats almost happening, The year of Matrix) unashamedly, woud anyone be suprised if this happens?
Of course I dont think its a good thing, but what do you all think? Suddenly the Pandora's box on some already insane developments is busted open full.
