Does anyone think that Warner Brothers move to push the on time Harry Potter and the Half Blooded Prince back 8 months from a November release to a July release had ANYTHING to do with the fact that the studio failed to get its act together with a summer tentpole for 2009? Having the next Potter film come out this year- along with The Dark Knight WB would have made a killing at the boxoffice and really would have forgotten about Speed Racer...I bet they are kicking themselves that they mishandled they're Superman franchise and Justice League film so badly that they had to screw over the boy wizard.
Also- is this going to make it urgent to not let it happen again? Will this get things moving a bit faster on Justice League: Mortal, Superman: Man Of Steel, SuperMax, Green Lantern, The Flash, Wonder Woman, and other DC properties? They are going to need summer tentpoles- especially to go up against Marvels up-and-coming slate (Thor, Iron Man 2, Spider-man 4, Avengers, Venom, Captain America, to name a few) in the coming years.
Maybe it was just a marketing move. Making this Potter flick a summer release- may end up making more money for the film than a November release- but the studio has to know that a DC superhero feature in summer 2009 with a Potter film in November 2008---equals much more money for them than just the one summer Potter film...and it has to be getting to them.
I think this might be a catalyst- having their mishandling of their DC franchises come at the peril of one of their top-grossing film franchises....could THIS open their eyes.
