Even as a kid I knew it was so totally subpar compared to what had come before. It's just not even remotely competently put together. And frankly, most of the cast was too old by that point as well. Such a shame the way the that era of Superman films went after Donner left the franchise.

hahahahah for real Krypton man! i swear sometimes at certain angles you could see gray in Chris's hair and it sooo freaking dark. like 3 shades too dark! hahaha freaking just terrible!! haha i wonder if people on "3men" would make fun of jon cryer's role in this!!..its like some train wreck that i cant avert my eyes from!! i also agree to go out like this is just sad!

Superman IV is just lackluster or bad from start to finish. Even Hackman looks like he can't stand to be in this train wreck.

I can't help but feel that if the Salkynd's had just let Donner continue on that we actually would have had more super hero movies earlier than what actually did happen. The Superman films wouldn't have dropped off in quality (and perhaps box office) thus making it seem like this was a good bet for the studios. We may have gotten Batman before 1989, and then the floodgates would have opened.

I dunno, I'm happy with the 89 Batman and BR. The problem with the What if? scenarios is that we could have had a bunch of movies like B&R or a bunch of cheap knock offs polluting the market like Asylum does.

Even with the lack of decent ones for a few decades the glut of ones we have now more than make up for them.

True enough Kev. I just think that outside of the SFX issues, we really could have had more big budget CBMs before the late 90's/early 2000's. It's like, sure, we give Marvel credit for the "shared universe" thing, and they deserve it for what they've accomplished, but... It's really a question of courage more than some breakthrough, though, isn't it? I mean if some bright mind, some young buck with the authority at some entertainment company way back in the day had the testicular fortitude to say, "Hey, we own X, Y, and Z super hero characters from the same line... And there they interact... Hmm... There is money to be made here", who knows what we could have gotten sooner than later?

But that wasn't the case with Warner Bros. which has always had the rights to the DC characters. And I am talking about the early 80's here. I think that if Donner was allowed to finish Superman II and go on to III (rumored that he would have done Brainiac and Supergirl in that one) and the quality and BO didn't drop, then before 1989 I think we get Batman and someone, somewhere get's Marvel's ducks in a row too and it snowballs from there. Shared universes, quality directors involved, ect. It's a what if, I know, but Donner getting kicked off the Superman franchise was just so arbitrary and short sighted. That film is a testament to Donner's talent as a director and his work ethic, so it's always been weird that you get rid of that guy so you can bring in, what, a Superman film with Richard Pryor?
