And isn't John Cho Korean? I actually fan cast him for Wong, he'll and Strange too, before I looked up his nationality. And yes. I do think it might matter whether you cast a native Chinese actor/actress for these roles, especially if Marvel's looking to break through even stronger in the overseas Asian markets. Emphasis on China.

Hell, I keep saying.... Go for broke and cast Lucy Liu as Wong. I am desperate to get her in the MCU.

That said though isn't she tied up with elementary? Tv contracts are very difficult to get out of. Just ask Jensen ackles when marvel tried to get him for captain america

I honestly don't think the wong we see in the comics will be the wong we see in the movie. I think they'll modernise him a bit to avoid the whole colonial master slave thing.

I think they'll definitely modernize Wong to suit today's audiences and avoid any sort of negative connotations and racial stereotypes.

I'm confident that is the case. Not interested in Wong calling Strange "master", even if it's meant as a student/teacher thing.

The Iron Man movies did a good job of recycling a pre-feminist throwback like Pepper Potts and making her workable in a modern context. I think they could do a good job on Wong as Strange's partner/servant without making him a simpering Asian butler.

My personal casting choice would be Godfrey Gao.

I actually titled that after a joke from a DEFENDERS comic from some years back done by the old JLI creative team. Nightmare takes over Wong's body to inform Strange of Dormmamu's plans. Nightmare is very catty talking to Strange and then drops the line "Wong... Is that his first name or his last name? You... You don't even know, do you?" It just had occurred to me that, frankly, I didn't know which it was either. t:

Think Donnie Yen would be the best casting with overseas Asian markets in mind. Massive name in China and HK (both of which have big movie industries). Is a martial arts expert and fluent English speaker.

tom wu plays a pretty badass guy on marco polo on netflix. the show had mixed/negative reviews, but wu was praised as a scene stealer, and he along with kublai are easily one of badass guys on the show

My perfect Wong
Ever since I saw his portrayal of Yip Man I said to myself this guy is the perfect Wong in a Strange film. Sure that character was insane from a martial arts POV but he also showed that magical restraint and air that I envisioned for Wong. I hope they treat Wong with the love and respect he deserves. He needs to be a total bad@ss (martial & mystic arts but also his air, like otherworldly cool).
