Saw it, loved it. Nice little mystery, with interesting people. Cruise and Pike were excellent. The final action sequence was extremely well done. The sound engineering in that and the car chase are worthy of some high praise.

Have any fans of the novels seen the film?
I'm interested to know what their opinion is, having prior knowledge of Reacher as a character.

Here you go:

I've read every Jack Reacher novel, I love them and I guarantee you Tom Cruise is Jack Reacher. Now whenever I read the books ill be picturing Cruise as Reacher. I thought the film was fantastic. Cruise just owns the role like noone else could. The action is top notch and it feels smarter than your typical action movie. I give it a 9/10

Ive read all the Reacher books except the newest one I get them when there in paperback.I liked it a lot really solid I wish more fans would realize the movie won't ruin the books.

Thanks. I did read the thread; I was hoping for something a little more in-depth.

Not read the novels, but just seen the film. Thought it was a very strong detective film, and I loved the action scenes. :)

Huge fan of the books. The movie was a nice throwback to the kind action movies we don't get anymore. It's complete fluff but it's the kind of fluff I could use more of. Did the camera ever shake once? It goes a little overboard with the talky exposition at times making it occassionally feel like a Law and Order episode. It didn't have nearly enough Herzog.

Regarding Cruise: I like him in the role and I like this take on the character in general. I think he played it just a hair too smug occassionally and I didn't buy every tough guy line. He won't be replacing the character I have in my head when I read the books, but I'm perfectly happy having two slighly different takes on the character. More Reacher for me.

I agree. I liked how there were long stretches of the film without any dialogue at all.

Having never read the books, I had no pre-concieved notion of what the movie should be like.... so maybe MY opinion on it differs greatly from fans of the books.

I liked it, a lot.
Good action scenes, decent dialogue. Story flowed moderately well. Characters were decent, although I felt Pike was sorta bland. Didnt like her, didnt hate her, just was sort of there delivering lines.

Gave it an 8.5/10, an "average" movie for me is about 6.75/10

Having a 50 to 60 million budget makes me like this movie even more. If only hollywood would turn out more movies like this. I rather see 2 or 3 of these types of movies rather than 1 pointless, forgetful and expensive Battleship type of movie.

I'm a fan of Reacher, and I've read 3 of his books.

Man I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. Combo of Dirty Harry, Bullitt, Chinatown and Man With No Name. Very laid-back and straight to the point. It has the attitude and mood required for a Jack Reacher movie. The fight scenes, car chase, and shoot-out are some of the best in years.

Tom gives his all as Jack, more grim and violent, but after watching the movie, I felt that other actors could have been a better Reacher. Jack's size is just too much of a big deal for me to accept Tom as Jack. Chris Hemsworth and Hugh Jackman would have been more acceptable if they really want someone handsome (although Reacher in the books ain't what you would call handsome), but Tom is just too small to play Reacher.

The movie would also have been much better if it was rated R instead of PG 13. Jack is more in the realm of the mature bad-ass heroes ala Dirty Harry Punisher Mad Max RoboCop John McClane John Rambo than the for-all-ages heroes like Bond Indiana Jones or Bourne.

7/10

Would have been 7.5/10 if they have gotten a better actor to play Reacher, and would have been 8/10 if it was rated R.

saw it today. was really surprised at how much i enjoyed it. 9/10

Couldn't have said it any better myself. This would have been my review if you had written it with more spelling and grammar errors.

I kind of wish Herzog was in the movie more.

He was great. He is such a great director and I love so many of his films. But every time I hear his voice, the first thing that pops into my head is "bear guy".

I also can't really imagine this movie without Cruise. He and Pike made it for me. I could watch them in these roles for days at a time.

They rally don't make films like this anymore. and that's a shame. This was really an impressive film of a more classic style of film making. Heavily story driven and the action scenes. WOW..I LOVE the fact there is little to no music during these scenes, all you get is the sound effects. No loud rock music or (enter popular song here) just the sound of punches and tires squealing.

And it's a film that doesn't feel the need to have every scene include one action scene...which is great.

It's a shame more films don't go this route.

This film is on my "To watch" list. I'm glad it's getting this kind of praise. Makes me want to pick up the books.

Plus Cruise does basically all his own stunts including all of his own driving. It's crazy how much that little thing increases the phenomenalness of the action scenes

Agreed. I don't know if its a little thing though, but it sure makes a big difference.

I think my favorite scene in the film is the one with the two bumbling henchmen trying to knock out Cruise in the bathroom:woot:
Also the car chase.

From Yahoo news:

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Given his age and the tough year he's had in the tabloids, is Tom Cruise still a go-to guy when Hollywood is looking for an action hero?
The answer is yes, based on the performance of his current movie, Paramount's "Jack Reacher." It's taken in $45 million in the 10 days since opening with $15.6 million in a very crowded and competitive holiday market. Its second week was a solid $14 million, and it's added $22 million from overseas.
Holiday movies tend to have legs and "Reacher" has yet to roll out in the majority of major foreign territories, so both of those numbers, particularly the international, will be growing. All signs point to it surpassing $200 million at the worldwide box office. That's not a blockbuster figure, and Paramount is staying mum on a sequel, but with a $60 million budget, "Jack Reacher" will make money for Paramount.

Hopefully for the sequel, they maintain a low budget and keep the 60's-70's vibe going. And make it a hard R. And don't call it JACK REACHER 2. I know Cruise is still gonna be Reacher, but they have to make an effort to make him look dirtier and less handsome. I'm very happy for this success, and hopefully Jack Reacher will be a Bond-like franchise going on and on forever. Maybe Tom could have 3 Reacher movies in his belt in a 10-year period and then recast him with an older and grittier Chris Hemsworth. Jack's in 17 novels so far and a few short stories so they won't have a problem with the source material.

I am ssoooo not a Cruise fan but we went to see this on a whim and it was actually pretty good. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I did figrue out some of the plot points early but it didn't bother me any. I had a great time and I will probably buy this when it comes out. 8/10. :D Robert Duvall was awesome.

I'm about to see this today. :word:
From the reviews and WOM I've absorbed this past week, it looks like Christopher McQuarrie might be the perfect choice for M:I-5.
