Far From Home Jake Gyllenhaal is...Mysterio?

^^ It's Jake Gyllenhaal. So for sure, his role won't be small.

It makes me sad that such a good actor got a role in this franchise, he deserves better.

I’m sure he feels like he deserves that paycheck.

Yeap because after this movie he'll never be able to do any other kind of movies ever again.:whatever:

Huh? What are you talking about? Shouldn't you be happy rather than sad? I would have thought this would make everyone happy. It's great news for us because we get such a well-regarded actor to play such a key role in a Spider-Man film, and it's great for Jake Gyllenhaal because he gets a plum role in a highly popular film series. I don't see any downside for anybody.

I don't get that either. I don't think SMH was as good as the Raimi movies, but Micheal Keaton's Vulture is generally considered top tier villainhood for the MCU, isn't he? Why is it a shame that Gyllenhaal might get in on that?

Lol I never got the haters for homecoming. It’s not the movies fault they went different. Blame Sony for almost running the franchise into fatigue so bad they had to change up a few things. Blame Sony for making spinoffs of side Spider-Man characters so marvel can’t use them. If Sony didn’t reboot prematurely we wouldn’t be in this position. The movie wasn’t even bad, the changes are ok. I’d rather have this tho then a rushed boring franchise that doesn’t know what it wants.
I don’t agree with the changes we got but it’s far from a bad franchise

I do agree that we got a nice change of pace from what we were doing with TASM. No silly out for revenge story, evil corporate stuff or trying to make Spider-Man out to be this symbol of hope. Just a teen having to learn to accept his limitations as a hero fighting a blue collar villain that is kinda a reflection of that. I think it could've been done better, but I thought it was fine.

They took the kinda villain that I didn't think could work (guy who steals things for money) and made him not generic and one dimensional, to me.

Let's all point and laugh at him next right? How DARE he have a different opinion!? How dare he not like what I like! How old are you? ******** hater detected? Really? Sheesh.

Calm down. I didn't know my post would hurt your feelings.

LOL! HC ******** hater detected.

Just because someone doesn't like a certain take on a character/universe, he is a classified as a ******** hater. Brilliant logic. Dully noted and couldn't care less. Feel free to enjoy this wannabe Spider man movie which pretends to be the best SPYDAHMEN EVAH YALL, but takes the piss on almost everything Spider-Man represents.

Wow! There are people with common sense in this section?!? No way! :awesome: Who would have thought? :cwink:

I actually agree with you, I cringe when I see people claim it's the most accurate Spider-Man depiction when it's really REALLY not. Spider-Man is treated like a side-kick by Tony Stark and that is such a betrayal of the original concept for the character. Also for some reason Peter is part Miles Morales with Ganke as his best friend and has his suit gifted by someone else, doesn't make it himself. A lot of this version's supporting cast are INOs and Peter talks to an A.I. (thank god that didn't return in Infinity War, I hope it stays like that), Peter doesn't mention even once about Uncle Ben in Homecoming, not even Aunt May mentions him when Peter's about to go to the dance. The best part, the absolute best part of the film is the part where Peter faces Vulture on his own with his homemade suit and we get that incredible scene where Peter lifts the debris, straight outta "If this be my destiny". Only problem? They use a Tony Stark line to give him inspiration......not.... oh I don't know Uncle Ben? Perfect time to use the "With great power, comes great responsibility" line. What a wasted opportunity. But you know, greatest Spider-Man on screen right?

There's quite a few of us with level heads around these parts. I may not share your view of Homecoming but your opinion is appreciated.

Yep, not to mention that Peter is supposed to be at an ordinary high school, not some private school for brainy students funded by Stark.

Peter being handed things on a silver platter goes against what the character stands for.

Yep.

Anyway to get back on topic, how do you think Jake Gyllenhaal will play Mysterio? Will he go full on camp with it? Or will he play it more sinister and creepy? Maybe a bit of both? What do you guys think?

Definitely agreed. Hate that they gave the character a private science school and a wimpy flash, a frumpy MJ and some ganke Ned impersonating Guy. I hope most of those characters don’t return. I bet Sony is hard at work making a spin off flash film that’s why we didn’t get a good one in the mcu

Yeah... Spider-Man's supporting cast is unbearable in the MCU. Even May had what, 3 scenes?

Can we please go back on topic? I know that there isn't a whole lot else to talk about at the moment but we really should stick to the topic.

I think Gyllenhaal will play Mysterio as a mixture of creepy and campy, a blend of sinister and entertaining. In some scenes, I think he will emphasize Mysterio's entertaining and melodramatic side, and in other scenes, he will highlight Mysterio's eerie and creepy side.

A number of movie villains manage to get the balance just right, being entertainingly campy without being too silly, and also being threatening and sinister without going too far in that direction either. One example is Gert Frobe's performance as Auric Goldfinger in the James Bond movie Goldfinger. In that film, Goldfinger as a villain was the perfect mixture of entertaining and sinister. He was a fun villain, but also threatening and deadly serious when necessary. I wouldn't be surprised if Jake Gyllenhaal takes a similar approach to Mysterio as Gert Frobe took to Auric Goldfinger.

I was watching clips from Donnie Darko, and I think Frank the Bunny is a great basis for Mysterio, especially in his voice.

I think this would be the best way to go, Mysterio should be played with a bit of flamboyance while also being a credible threat to Spidey.

One of the reasons I'm excited for FFH is because Mysterio is the villain so I'm really looking forward to see how Jake will play him.

I'm hoping it's not very campy with Mysterio, personally. I know the character can lend itself to that but one thing I do know is Gyllenhaal is gonna knock it out of the park.
