Far From Home Jake Gyllenhaal is...Mysterio?

I was behind Vulture being the villain in Homecoming from day 1.

I wasn't, largely because what actually appeared in Homecoming was nothing like the Vulture I remember from Spiderman: The Animated Series when I was younger or any Spiderman comic I'd ever read, admittedly it's been years since I've picked one up involving Vulture though so the character may have been changed more into what was in Homecoming.

In the animated series he was all about stealing life force to restore his youth &, if I recall correctly, cure some form of cancer.. ?

That was solely an animated series thing. They were never gonna go that route for the movie.

Oh I know, because it would have been somewhat out of place for the MCU IMO.

Was that incarnation of the character exclusive to the Animated Series? I could have swore it was very similar in some of the comics at the time.

Vulture was very much an update to the traditional origin. In 616, It was having his business partner screw him over, in SAN it was having Osborn steal his invention, in Homecoming- he was screwed over by Tony Stark and lost his company (Bestman salvage) but all of them have one thing in common. An older guy- Adrian Toomes getting screwed over by his superiors and wanting revenge.

Homecoming was very true to the core of Vulture. The wanting youth thing exclusive to SMTAS.

I think it was around in the comics albeit briefly. Maybe just once.

I could see why people wouldn't be fans of Vulture if that was the extent of their limited knowledge of the character.

Anyway, back to Mysterio.

What do you guys think his motivation will be? Will he still be a special effects guy at least? Maybe just a stuntman?

I hope so. Unlike Vulture (who has had multiple different origins) Beck is always the same. Disgruntled special effects/movie guy becomes a criminal. It would be a very unique take on a villain

Vulture is not known for stealing people's life force. That was mostly an animated series thing.

Damn, first Vulture, now Mysterio. MCU Spidey seems to come into conflict with guys wearing weird helmets a lot.

Ugh...SMTAS Vulture. That interpretation of the character didn't work for me at all. There were a few villains on that show where I didn't care for them, but Vulture was probably about the worst of them (him or Electro). Even the 60s show had a better Vulture.

It'll be cool to get another villain with a mask and secret identity.

Agree, keep it the classic suit.Just make it like a Darth Vader suit, where it's like a suit that keeps him alive cause maybe when he was doing a special fx stunt on a movie set there was an explosion.

Life support suit against a kid who can stop a bus with his bear hands wouldn't end well for the villain.

I think Electro was Red Skull son or something.

That did happen in the comics in the 90s, see Amazing Spider-Man 387.

I think the basics about Mysterio remain the same, but a lot of the stuff changes due to the adaption. The 90s Spider-Man cartoon and Ultimate Spider-Man cartoons tried to make him sympathetic, while the comics go back and fourth on Mysterio being a totally generic bad guy and a sadistic psychopath.

So is everyone basically on board with green and purple?

Being that the green on Vulture is pretty subtle, I wouldnt mind going heavy on green for Mysterio.

I'm also down for a color swap:

I do hope this is true. Not only Gyllenhaal is a phenomenal actor; Mysterio has potential for some groundbreaking visuals in a SH movie!

Heck, they've made D-List heroes work. I'm looking at you Scott Lang.
All the Iron Man villains were d list. They basically reverted Mandarin to a d list with the switch.

Killmonger was basically unknown unless you really follow comics.

Alexander Pierce was unknown or made up villain and was awesome .

Very excited by this news. Mysterio has always been one of my top favourite Spidey villains and yes I would love to see something closely resembling the traditional costume as its part of the characters charm. I would never have thought of Gyllenhaal for the role, not because I think he's a bad choice it just never occurred to me and I hope he knocks it out of the park. That said i'm still struggling with whether I enjoyed Homecoming or not. I liked many aspects of it but disliked a lot of others so in some ways I would have preferred to have seen Mysterio in a more traditional spider-man focused movie (in that he has no connection Tony Stark and The Avengers etc) but nevertheless I look forward to seeing how things pan out
