Craig's 007 and Elba's 007 against a Scaramanga-esque professional assassin played by Michael Fassbender?

And by the way you're right, Fleming did write in a bit of Scottish into Bond's background after seeing Connery's performance, because the Connery films so firmly established that aspect at a time when the character was still being developed.

Connery's portrayal was only the final thing that convinced Fleming to give Bond a Scottish background. There is correspondence from the 50s between Fleming the College of Arms regarding the accuracy of tying Bond to a Scottish noble house. Fleming himself was part-Scottish and Bond was always at core an idealized version of Fleming.

You are the one making this into something it isnt. This isnt about keeping the black man down as you seem to think. James is white. His culture, ways, and sensibilities come from who he is, his family, his heritage, and his life.

People ***** all the time about hollywood changing the ethnicity of a character when it doesnt matter but when it does matter as it matters here they scream for it to be changed. WTF people.

I don't care what the ethnicity is but it has to make sense with the character.

It's one thing to argue that bond should stay white because the character has always been white, i'm not going to change anyone's minds who doesn't want to but i still find your points the most confusing.

This has nothing to do with "keeping the black man down" i'm not even black and i'm making broad points about all races being eligible to play any character.

I still don't understand why to you culture=race? that is troubling in my mind. If someone is born and raised in england maybe from several generations why do they necessarily have a different culture and sensibilities than someone with a different skin color? Especially when we've had an irishman and an australian play bond but according to you they would have more cultural ability to play bond than a black or asian brit who's been living in england for generations.

-edit- and finally for those of you who think i'm crazy Elba has actually been in talks with barbara brocolli:

“I didn’t realize that there was this talk and then I did a film with Idris and he said that he met Barbara Broccoli and that it does seem like there is a possibility in the future that there could very well be a black James Bond. And I would have to vote for Idris because I just finished working with him and he’s a great guy.”

If even Eon is open to the possibility, maybe it isn't such a wild and wacky and sacrilegious idea after all.

I've been pondering Scaramanga these last few days.

I love the fact that he's the post-Blofeld villain in the books, much like Bane is the post-Joker type villain.

Interestingly, if I recall correctly, he wasn't that well received when TMWTGG came out. People complained that the character was not worthy of being the villain, being more like a henchmen. Ironic, if one thinks about certain criticisms that have been heaped at Hardy's Bane. I've also been contemplating Bane and Talia and Bond lately and it struck me how similar their relationship and plan is to Renard and Elektra in TWINE.

Haha ya beat me to it. Yes i just read that on the site that shall not be named. If Barbara and co think they can pull it off then who am i to argue what they do. They own the product. If any black man could do it Elba is the one and ive said this on many occassions. But i do think they should leave his heritage and background out of the movie if they go this route. Flemming made it clear who Bond is and a black man aint it. Best to just keep all of that out of the movie. Personally id prefer Fassbender over Elba tho. Fassbender is a spitting image of Fleemings drawing of Bond and he is about as Bond as you can get. At the end of the day when i think of Bond there is a certain criteria that comes to mind. One of those criteria is he is a white british guy. I cant help fifty years of bond films and the characters creator had that influence on me.

Yeah there's been a huge amount of overlap between the two franchises, both the films and literature.

And to further the Scaramanga/Bane connection it's interesting to note that both sort of signify the rebirth of the protagonist; Bane comes in and breaks a seasoned Batman who's been through hell (in the comics the death of Jason Todd&the crippling of Batgirl/ death of Rachel in the film) causing him to go through a rebirth and come back and defeat the masked man. Likewise Scaramanga comes in after Blofeld has killed Tracy and Bond was left with amnesia and forces Bond to go regain his skills and defeat the assassin.

The symmetry is interesting.

At this point, it's moot since Elba, as youthful as he is now, will probably be in his 50's by the time Craig's done with the franchise. Now he looks in 10 years, that's fine but it's a liability when it comes to the sequels. I love Elba, but this is not his destiny.

This is true. I dont know fassbenders age but short of scheduling conflicts id say he is the shoe in. At least i hope he is.

It's best not to think of casting right since we don't know the window when Craig will exit and when someone can fill in the role. To play Devil's Avoocate though, I think they should place their bets on Fassbender or Hardy, and pray that they'll age gracefully in 6-8 years. The good thing is that most people now age really really well, so who knows?

Robert Downey Jr was given Iron Man was he was like 43 and he still looks fine; as youthful as ever now in 2012. It's about the swagger and staying sharp. Same thing with the seemingly immortal Johnny Depp. Hugh Jackman still looks convincing as Wolverine now, and in some ways, looks better for the part than he did in 2000.

Black don't crack baby...

Either way i'm just happy that he is on the radar for eon, to be fair assuming craig is done by 2016 elba would be 44. I've mentioned this in another comment but the likely next bond is someone we're not even that familiar with at the moment.

Craig was a wildcard and i predict the next bond will be as well.

Keanu doesnt seem to age either.

We'll see. Like what my previous post about said, people are aging quite well these days so who knows? The 40's is the new 30's (if you take care of yourself, that is.)

He's a vampire. And it doesn't hurt that he has some Asian in him. Speaking of Asians, Ming-Na got hired play an agent in SHEILD the show. She looks beautiful..and she's friggin' 48. She can still easily play characters in their 30's.

I bought Goldfinger, The World is Not Enough, and On Her Majesty's Secret Service today all 10 bucks at Best Buy. They all look fantastic. I already own CR and Goldeneye so I know own all my favorites on Blu Ray

Yeah i saw that. Im intrigued. I wanted to bludgeon her character in Stargate Universe so i hope i like her in SHIELD.

It's still weird how 'S:U' got cancelled like that. I felt that the show had so much potential.

Before John Logan was brought in to rewrite the script, did you guys know that in the original draft, the working title was 'Silver Bullet'? (I'm assuming it relates to 'Silva'. Perhaps he wasn't suppose to be of Latin descent. Maybe his original surname was 'Silver' to connect his character to Quantum, along with Mr. White and Dom Green)

Either way, Silver Bullet was a bad title to begin with. Makes me think of that werewolf movie from the 80's.

The president of Syfy is a dumbass. Should be renamed the wrestling channel. The Stargate property is pretty much dead with the SGU characters in stasis forever. What kind of ending is that!
