Its a nice action film , everything in it is good but not casino royale good , and nowhere near great. I honestly want to compliment this movie more than i enjoyed it , because this is a blockbuster well put that doesn't treat the audience like an orangutan . Comparing to CR , this is much more ambitious and should have been a much better movie...but it isnt. Cr's brisk pacing is nowhere to be seen in here. It has some terrible issues in that area. It's too concerned with some Bond formulas that hurt the story and how things get resolved (this movie has the perfect opportunity and time to do some hard espionage but instead opts for typical bond fluff that feel completely displaced from the movie) . The action isn't particularly well staged. With the talented involved , the beautifully photography , the nice story....this should have been the best Bond ever. This must have been awesome on paper , but the translation to cinema misses something.
It tries to explore the man behind the myth but it fails completely .We start with Bond in a melancholy state and as time passes by , it explores some of its past , but nothing is actually developed. Things are just there. Like throwing little bones to the audience. Silva actually is a much better formed character , and his motivations are crystal clear. It's a shame is actions dont quite match the characterizations. He's supposed to be pure evil but he doesn't do anything other bond villains don't do . He's a former agent but we never see him behaving like one (especially the way he brags). His plans are also a little idiotic (i think the Internet will scrutinize some of these movie narrative choices...they make little to no sense). The whole cyber-terrorism is made in a way that looks straight out of a 90's movie.
Deakins work is quite nice. Offcourse everyone will be talking about the Shangai scene , because its pure eye-orgasm , but everything that precedes it is also quite strong. Macau i cant say im a fan of some of the display , everything is way too filled for my taste. The 2nd half is not as good , although there's some nice moments (the long setup with a very slow push in in Silva's entrance , and the outside shots of the Burning House...that is some masterful grading)
One thing that surprised me is how , outside the prologue , there isn't another crazy action set piece. Bond girls also are very discreet in the story
Batfans will immediately recognize some strange similarities to TDk. From the characterization of the villain (his theatricality , the scarred face) , the themes (the bond between the protagonist and the villain , two faces of the same coin. In here they resort to a story about two rats) and even some of the plot points (imprisonment , the police costumes , the interrogation , etc). And obviously the tone , that is probably Nolan's biggest legacy in handling popular franchises , and this one definitely takes itself seriously (but this is something that is already established in c.royale= . Batman fans will enjoy Skyfall.
All in all it's a good movie , and a very good Bond movie but i think it fails to achieve its potential. If i had to choose an action/spy movie this year , i definitely would go to Soderberg 's Haywire .
Forgot to add , some shoddy cgi (dragons , bond in elevator , chopper , bond in the bike)
