James Cameron's "Avatar" Thread v.4

Panasonic says Hollywood ruined 3D

http://dvice.com/archives/2011/07/the-blame-game.php

They say too much of a good thing is a bad thing, but did Hollywood listen? Not at all. Panasonic, a big supporter of 3D says all the inferior "me too" 3D films made with conversions is destroying the format.

After James Cameron's Avatar took home the gold in 2010 for portraying its otherworld love story, other film houses followed suit with quick and cheap 3D conversions of 2D movies. Unsurprisingly, moviegoers were able to weed out terrible 3D movies such as Alice in Wonderland and Clash of the Titans and call them out for capitalizing on a growing trend. By that time, it was too late, Hollywood had already latched onto 3D as a new cash cow.

TechRadar caught up with Panasonic's marketing director Andrew Denham at the Intellect Consumer Electronics 2011 to get his thoughts on the whole 3D schtick and confirms what we've suspected all along:

"It all comes back to quality," he said. "Hollywood damaged 3D by rushing so many badly converted films out in the Avatar's wake."

"What we need now is the next level, the next Avatar. And that's a big ask, I think."

In addition, John Cassy, channel director for Europe's Sky 3D points out that deciding what to portray in 3D is rather important — a stink we've made before.

"It's very easy to make bad 3D," he told the panel. "At Sky we only make native 3D programmes, and our first stage of production is always to forget about the 3D altogether." "Because first and foremost, it's a TV programme - and if the story isn't right or it doesn't make any sense or it's not compelling, it's not good enough and we won't buy it."

Well, if lackluster 3D is destroying the format's chances of survival, then how is tying Avatar on 3D Blu-ray exclusively to Panasonic 3DTVs until February 2012 not doing the same? Consumers want quality 3D content, but if the gold bar starts with James Cameron's masterpiece, how can anybody who doesn't buy a new Panasonic 3DTV enjoy it? D'oh!

Oh, and those plastic 3D glasses don't exactly help either, but you already knew that.

Avatar 2 is not slated to hit theaters until at least December 2014. Can 3D mill on for another three years?

^^
I read the article as Hollywood ruined Panasonic 3D TVs sells...

isnt it interesting that Transformers 3 gets a lot of praise for the 3D? hmmmmm could it be the 3D camera?

You know what killed it for me? The price! Fifteen bucks is ridiculous!

i think the price woudlnt be a problem if only 2 3D movies would be realesed in the whole year. and good 3d movies. then it would really be an event every year.

Even though Avatar's 3D blew me away...I have ZERO interest in a 3D tv. I don't want to wear those stupid glasses everytime I want to watch a movie at home.

3D in the next 10 years should only be for theater experience. IMO. ohhh and for gaming.

If you have a room full of friends watching your 3D TV you have to have a pair of glasses for everyone, at a price of $150 a piece.

I think we are beginning to see glasses free 3D very soon in other formats than cell phones and hand held gaming consoles. I've tried it out and while it looks odd at first you start getting used to it pretty fast.

I checked out the Nintendo 3DS and it hurt my eyes and gave me a headache. For those that don't know, it's 3D without glasses.

Just curious, have any of you hardcore Avatar fans bought the statue below? and why isn't there a RDA Scorpion statue of the same quality.

I disliked Avatar but if I was rich, I would totally buy that. One thing I can say, the human technology was fantastic in that film!

Not sure why they didn't do one for the RDA Scorpion but Hot Toys did do ones for Jake and Neytiri

That's totally redeemed Worthington in my eyes. Here's hoping he's Alex Mason again in a Black Ops film.

Probably my favorite fan made video for Avatar. (John's Walk track from Ink works so perfectly)

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment announced this morning that James Cameron's Avatar will arrive as a "Collector's Edition" Blu-ray 3D on October 15 globally and in North America on October 16.

"3D television is the future of home entertainment," said Cameron, "I'm a huge proponent of the technology and very pleased that 'Avatar' can be viewed in the living room the way it is meant to be seen."

"As the number of homes with 3D televisions continues to grow, we thought it was important to bring the biggest 3D film ever right into your living room," continued producer Jon Landau, "This is the only way fans should experience the world of Pandora and this release offers the highest picture quality possible.”

Previously only available to consumers through an exclusive deal with Panasonic, the two-disc Avatar 3D Blu-ray Collector's Edition will feature the original theatrical release and be available in all-new collectible packaging. Seen by more than 310 million people worldwide, the Oscar and Golden Globe winning epic is the highest-grossing film of all time, taking in more than $2.7 billion in worldwide box office. It is also top-selling Blu-ray disc of all time.

Say what you will, but the CG characters in that flick have yet to really be matched in regards to human-like appearance.
