James Gunn: Future DC Video Games Will Fit in DCU Canon

This is the one thing im not really excited for at the moment to be honest.

I feel like you hinder the creativity of games too much with something like this.
Games have their own strengths and not every actor is a good voice actor etc.
They would need to make visuals fit with live action etc.

Im not sure this is a good idea at all...but i will wait and see.
Because in the end i probably wouldnt care too much if i just can play any new Superman game or so.
But we will see.

I would rather a massive AAA Superman game be its own thing, like the Arkham games, rather then be a movie tie in.

Honestly I think Gunn's plan would work best if he earmarks certain DC characters that would make for very awesome video games and focus them in that area while still setting those games in his universe.

Oh well if they’re fun I don’t mind.
Just for the record though, I don’t think it’s a tie in. Just like, filler in between movies

Yeah, this one's a bit of a worry, even as a non-gamer. Seems tough to maintain quality control. Wonder what effect this is having on the WW game that's coming...

I assume none since this game will most likely come out 2024 and there doesnt seem to be a solid plan for WW in the DCU yet.
So i think this one is safe.

That too because if its all connected, you probably want to put out stuff around the same time its Live Action etc stuff happens.
Like lets say the Superman movie...you probably dont want to release a Superman game 2-3 years later, you want it to release when the movie comes out because of the hype and all.

I need to see a proper plan and execution of this, but im really really worried because the gaming industry already doesnt do too much with Comic Book characters...now not giving them creative freedom to do things how they want, might turn them off even more.

Oh well we’ll have to wait and see. I definitely want to play more dc games though. Like I would love a Lego justice league game

I reckon people are a bit jaded because Gotham knights wasn’t that good but once some announcements come though people will be excited again. Like a green lantern game would be amazing

Tying video games to their cinematic universe seems like a stupid idea. A big part of what makes the Insomniac Spider-Man games and Arkham games work is that they have the room to build their own unique takes on the characters and their worlds. Not to mention that, with AAA game development time, if they get started now maybe they'll have a game ready for what, the end of their second phase?

Feels like a big limitation as you can cover a lot more in a game than you can in a film (a whole range of villains for eg rather than just 1 or 2).

It sounds like a silly gimmick to try to double down on what the MCU is doing and to feel innovative. "They connected movies and TV series for the first time? We're adding video games in that list!"

I think the DC games should stand on their own and not tie in with the DCU films & series

We would have never gotten the Arkham or Injustice games if they were bogged down by the DCU

I think the exact opposite honestly. I think it’s easier to say “let’s invest in this character who just made a couple hundred million dollars at the box office” then it is to say “let’s invest in a character not a lot of people are talking about at the moment”

But the problem isnt the character, its that it is supposed to be bound to a very specific version of it.
Like if Blue Beetle is a success, im all for Blue Beetle video game...but i think you can do creatively more if that video game is completely free to do with Blue Beetle what it can, instead of being bound by the world the Movie creates.

Undoubtedly the best take. Making new versions of established characters is far better. You are allowed freedom on nearly every aspect. Being constrained by movies is just a bad idea all around.

I would say, it depends on how tightly they interpret the concept. Making sure the video game versions cleave towards the movie versions, so that they are still recognizably the same character? Good idea, if only because the way the movie versions are done *should*, in theory, be the best engineered for making the character work with a general audience. Requiring that the story of the games fit into a tight interconnected plotline? That's more dubious, especially since you can't rely on people watching Batman 2 having played the game that is effectively Batman 1.5, anyway.

Basically, they should mandate that the video games use DC Movie Character X as its creative baseline, in terms of visuals and characterization and premise. However, the thing about a baseline is that its just that, a *baseline*- a starting point from which you then do the actual interesting stuff of *this* story.

I don't think we are going to get Superman or Batman games set in this universe, at least not AAA level.

Yeah nor I. I reckon they’ll just have, like, an add for the new superman game in fromt of the movie which is ok
