BvS Jesse Eisenberg IS Lex Luthor - Part 1

Even if Lex was a big guy with muscles he still wouldn't be able to take Superman because Superman has magical powers you see.

I

I guess my unease boils down to this. It makes me want to root for Lex Luthor.

This skinny nerdy awkward guy who built himself up to become the master of Metropolis and the financial king of North America. So he killed a few people to get there. I'll forgive that.

Then this Superman comes in. Typical dumb jock with his genetic abilities who swoops in knocking down Luthor's buildings and destroying his city.

It's like the classic high school drama. The hard working nerd vs the popular jock who never worked for what he has.

Then it feels even worse when you compare Lex to Batman.

A 30 year old billionaire who worked hard for everything he has.

VS

A 40 year old silver spoon born to the manor guy who's STILL not over his parents being murdered after 34 years so he embezzles resources from his family's company to beat up psychiatric patients.

But, but – that's always been the character dynamic? What does it change that Luthor is skinny and nerdy?

If you root for Lex, well then that's on you, not the premise of him being younger looking and skinny. Personally though, in a world and story with protagonists/heroes like Superman and Batman, I will never root for a guy killing innocent people to gain power.

It's not about how you gained your power, it's about how you use it. When it comes to Batman and Superman it seems like you have a problem with the characters themselves when spinning it like that – defining Batman as beating up psychos, and Superman as a dumb jock.

Now if they don't make Lex villainous enough, or fail to make Superman and Batman heroic/good enough, then I can get the complaints. But we don't know that yet.

What's to say this Luthor will be "nerdy"? Why do people keep saying that? Because Eisenberg played a nerd before?

I swear, some folks are so close-minded that it blows my mind. Yes, this Lex will be young and significantly less physically imposing than Superman, but that doesn't mean he won't be a shark of epic proportions.

The only thing that sorta bugs me about the casting is his voice...not really "Lex"

Have your comic books always been electronic? Do they have speakers that project audio?

If so, send some my way. I want to hear what Lex's voice is supposed to sound like.

Am I the only one who thinks MOS Superman won't be much of a challenge for Luthor?

Lex Luthor was never physically imposing to Superman because Superman could kill him with his pinky finger.

I know that actors can transform for their roles, and hey JE might even be capable of playing something other than his usual style of character...

... but I can't help assuming that if that's their choice of who best fits Lex as they've written him, then how they've written him isn't the Lex I always wanted to see.

Oh well...

Do I have to remind you that when you "assume", you make an A** out of U and Me...

Give the guy a chance, Lex never physically could fight Superman Lex isn't stupid. Lex is smarter than that.

For people who like the casting of Eisenberg as Lex, do you actually like this choice, or do you have faith that the movie will make it work somehow?

For me, both.

I really do like the direction they appear to be going in, and I feel Eisenberg is a fantastic choice to play the part as they've envisioned it.

:funny: No, as I already acknowledged the possibility I could be surprised.

I just feel like they probably picked him because they want a snotty, highly intelligent, arrogant and kind of annoying Lex... as that's pretty much his usual role.

Whereas I prefer a hard, stone faced, cool and calm Lex with psychopathic tendancies bubbling just under the surface, who commands respect and fear in those around him.

I didn't say anything about physically fighting Superman.

Open your mind to more than one set mind of "what you always wanted to see".

There is room to love more than one variant of something, believe me! :)

Lex Luthor with a Bill Gates voice.

I'm actually warming to Jesse now.

Honestly never actually seen or heard him in anything. I didn't realize how young and boyish he sounds. That's gonna take some time getting used to.

We don't know what kind of performance the script calls for, or what the audition process was like. I, personally, hope this role pushes Jesse in terms of his acting abilities.

I HIGHLY doubt they would have cast him for a role like this just so he could give the same kind of performance he's already given before. And btw, the age of this Luthor doesn't mean that you won't be getting the kind of Luthor you hope for.

I suggest you stick to your username and dream hopefully.

I pretend to see the good side?

I'm thrilled about the production designer, the writer, the DOP. Even Snyder. I love Watchmen and 300 and Dawn of the Dead.

I'm gonna go see this film because I think it'll look visually stunning. Just like how MoS looked.

But I'm not happy about Superman being robbed of his chance to have his own Spiderman 2 or The Dark Knight because Warner Brothers missed the shared universe train years ago and are scrambling to catch up.

Affleck. Yes I openly admit that bothers me. Mainly it's his age and voice.

Gadot? I challenge you to find a post where i criticise her casting.

It's just Eisenberg and Affleck that I'm not on board with.

I have a right to be here and debate my concerns. People said I was a basher for voicing my concerns about Parralax being in Green Lantern's origin story and Reynolds being cast as Hal.

I also never complained about Ledger because I saw how he could play a scrappy Australian roughneck and then an English knight and a homosexual cowboy. I was behind that.

I don't dislike Affleck or Eisenberg as actors. I even like seeing them in roles.

I just don't see them being capable of playing the characters that I love.

Especially with Lex Luthor, who has had so many iterations across comics, film, and tv.

So far, we've only gotten what most would describe as the "definitive" Lex archetype in a few adaptations. Mainly animation.

And like I said.

We should break expectations from past adaptations on screen.

Lex in the comics might have always sounded like Jesse Eiesenberg....We simply imagine based on mainly on what we've heard in other stuff.

Or I could just give my honest opinion?

Of course we don't know. Doesn't mean we are not allow to express what we think is likely.

This is a discussion forum, not a 'don't say anything until the movie comes out and we know for sure' forum...

I hope that your right and he gives a performance that is NOTHING like his usual.

I just doubt it.

I'm just going to sit back & wait.
Maybe He will be Great as Lex or not. I don't know yet.

Has the internet calmed down yet?

Or is everyone still...

Ya know, I'm kinda getting behind this Eisenberg as Lex thing. I just hope he tries something different and doesn't come off like he's doing Zuckerberg again.

It hasn't calmed down since this film was announced, so I doubt it would have calmed down regarding this news :o:oldrazz:

Gotta admit though, ever since MOS.... Snyder has definitely caused (whether intentional or not) a lot of mixed reactions from the choices that he's made concerning the character and his films....

I mean you have Pa Kent's Death...Superman killing Zod....to Ben being Batman, Wonder Woman being in this film...and now this.

And in some ways he isn't a villain, very much like Lex.

This. And that's a big reason why most of Lex's live action adaptations didn't completely work.

Outside of Michael Rosenbaum's Lex, most versions have been complete villains, with any shred of good intention being a lie or front for a most sinister goal, whereas, more often than not, Lex Luthor should have legitimate good intentions, or at least what he feels are good intentions.
