Or 'dark', like that hopeless wrist slitting extravaganza that was MoS

Probably referring to him going bald.
I actually like his clothes in the trailer. Combo of casual and stylish (well, it is some kind of style, right?).
Don't think he was referring to him only going bald. because that doesn't take more than one movie to happen. He mentioned specifically the growth of the universe.
Not sold on Lex yet. I was hoping for a more serious stoic Luthor. Something from the recent comics or TAS. I'm still interested in what Eisenburg is going to bring, but I'm iffy at the moment.
There lies the real problem people have with Esienberg as Lex, it's not what they wanted. Has anyone actually stopped to wonder if the Lex they want wouldn't actually be right for this film? It seems so many people just want a STAS Lex so bad that they can't accept any other interpretation.
You think a regular suit as opposed to current sport jackets, patterned shirts and "Converse" sneakers?
Could be. This is after all a Lex in his early days. Also, the more I think about it the more likely I find that he'll lose this enthusiasm he gets from being David to Superman's Goliath, taking up on the task to kill what is basically a god, and grow darker once his plans in BvS go south.
As I said, if I set aside the preconceptions of what Lex should be like taken from few comics and "Justice League Animated Series", then I find Eisenberg's version much more enjoyable. I'm definitely in "wait and see" mentality when it comes to him in this film.
I don't think his outfit is the only thing that will be changed. I think he'll become obsessed about his physique and becoming bulkier and bulkier.
That's a popular opinion of Lex in the trailer.According to the Hype, Lex without a baritone voice and bald head can't be anything other than 'camp'. It's either Lex is done 'correctly' according to some mouth breather's limited exposure to source material or he's camp - there is apparently no alternative.
Don't get me wrong I get why people wanted that I want that, I wanted that but watching the trailers I get why they are going with this version of Lex. However, I am in no way saying people have to like what they're seeing at all just that have a valid reason for it other than its not the version of Lex they wanted.
Yeah, I agree. I'm just saying that it's too early to write the character off, just because he doesn't appear as our usual Lex Luthor in the trailers so far. As, you said, lets see if it works for the film, and also, he's very likely to develop into more classical Lex down the line.
t:What I understand from what we've seen and from what Wilkinson is saying is that this Lex isn't there yet. He still has to go through some things to become the more typical Lex we all know. Maybe that's one of the reasons for going for a younger version of the character and someone who's meeting Superman for the first time.

Yep. We will have to wait and see; I'm certainly going to give it a chance. I don't even see this as not being a valid version of Lex. I'm just a little sick of seeing such an exaggerated comedic version of Luthor. I've seen it in movies and I'm kind of tired of it, because that's not the Lex I enjoy generally. Maybe Eisenberg is going to have something cool up his sleeve though.

Is it surprising that people want something different? We've gotten a goofy quippy Luthor in every film incarnation since the 70s.
I'm still giving Jesse a shot, but I'm not a big fan of what I've seen so far.
Let's hope this is true.
Again, from the way he looks like to the way he behaves publicly, it does look like an intention was to make him seem as quirky and harmless little man, the reason why he can play everyone around like a fiddle (Bruce, Clark, Senator Finch) and people never putting the two and two together, as they underestimate him completely. I really don't see any other explanation for this approach Snyder and Eisenberg have taken with the character.
We did get a glimpse of his arrogance and messiah complex and hopefully in his more private moments, and especially as his plans don't go as well as expected and he becomes more frustrated, we'll see more serious and darker side of him.
Also, we should keep in mind that it was never really fleshed out why does he want to bring Superman down in the trailers so far, and if Zod in MOS is anything to go by, DC won't go for a cliche "evil because he is evil, no explanation needed" guy as a villain, so those scenes when he shows where he stands and explains the reason why an all-powerful alien must be removed from our society should depict the character behind the facade, a deadly serious Lex Luthor we're more used to seeing.
Well said. I think that opening scene with the public facade of Lex turned a lot of people off (understandably) and they've completed ignored the other side we see teased of him. That could be a good thing as we will get a full taste of his psyche and motive in the movie. So maybe if people go into it expecting Lex Luthor to be a joke, they'll be pleasantly surprised.
I get you and I agree. Still, as long as they play this as his public persona or an early, enthusiastic Lex, openly enjoying the fact that he's the one to "kill the god", and he gets to change down the line, I think I'll be able to accept this approach.
