This post is a spoiler.

Even though his daughter was in the movie, I don't think her face was ever shown. To me, this means her role is open to any actress in future films. Does this suggest that we'll be seeing more of her? Trying to fight alongside Batman, who saved her life? Dent decided the she wasn't dad's favourite, so maybe she has some resentment there, too? I was worried the son's name would be Robin or something...thoughts?

edit: oops yeah i mean Dent and had typed Joker, sorry

I was kind of thinking the same thing, but she looked rather young in the movie. I don't think Nolan is going to try to give Bale's Batman any sidekicks anytime soon though.

Dent never pointed his gun at her when he was goading Gordon into choosing his favorite. Dent just picked his son when Gordon said "Don't point your gun at my son."

yeah i don't think nolan would be giving batman a robin or a batgirl...but it doesn't mean a teenage girl couldn't have high hopes of fighting alongside him and get her butt kicked when she tries to help out.

Yeah I noticed the same thing in the movie as well. Her face was never shown. I was also hoping that Gordon would have called her by her name. But he never did.

u sure he didn't say "don't point it at my family"?
but anyway, yeah she wasn't specifically targeted...it went wife then son

Yeah I noticed that they never showed her face, or really much of her at all. The only reason I could think of was just in case Nolan wanted to use her in future movies, since you couldn't really tell what age she was. But I doubt Nolan's gonna use her

NO need to doubt.. Hes never gonna user her!

I agree..at least not as Batgirl..she may get used as a character in the future like the son or mother, but I'd be very surprised if we see her get into costume. Maybe during the virals of the next movie we'll hear about a female copycat caped crusader that gets beat by a villain and we'll see Jim Gordon's character suffering for it in the actual movie. Or not at all. Just curious why Nolan would go to the trouble of not showing her face.

She's like....4.

How old do you think this Batgirl will be if you guys think Nolan will make her so?

She was like 6-7 tops in the film. I really doubt we see her as Batgirl.

Well it's not like I really think he's going to use Batgirl, or do anything remotely like that. I just found it strange that Nolan would hide her so much from us and was just wondering why he would do that

Maybe because she was so young and thus would not have a big part in the storyline?

James is somewhat older and so he would be able to grasp what was going on and respond accordingly.

Exactly. The whole point was that Harvey wanted Gordon to hear and see his loved one suffer knowing they were going to die. Rachel knew she was going to die, and Harvey heard that...he wanted to recreate that for Gordon. So while Harvey could have chosen either child, choosing the older one was an additional touch of cruelty--basically, you could lie to a four year old and make them feel better, but a nine year old knows exactly what's going on.

From a narrative/production standpoint, Nolan probably hid the daughter's face because of restrictions on child actors, and how difficult it can be to get emotional responses from younger ones. He also knew that by not including the daughter fanboys would be crying foul. Finally, having two kids negates Barbara Gordon from acting--she has to stay put to protect the remaining child.

Very good points. It makes sense now, thank you guys :)

So maybe he'll become batgirl...er...batkid?

Keep in mind that the children didn't just happen to be young, they were written that way. And if there was concern about child actors, they could have written children to be a bit older or even say something like the daughter is away at boarding school.

The daughter was written as young and her face was hidden...maybe the actor they had couldn't perform well enough when it mattered, but her age and keeping her hidden were deliberate.

Gordon's wife was spoon feeding little Barbara in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight is only about six months later...yeah, I doubt we'll see Batgirl for a very long, long time.

Unless the (possible) third installment takes place 18 or more years after TDK then I don't think we have to worry about seeing Batgirl in this francise.

As Nirvana said, Gordon's wife is feeding a baby in Batman Begins, so they probably just added the young daughter for continuity reasons, so people wouldn't be like, "wow, his son aged fast in one month"

Sorry, but that's just silly.

The hiding of the face was blatant. Clearly it was done to allow, if needed, another actress to fill the role in the future. Not that we will get a Batgirl in the future (I'm sure we won't) but Babs is important to the Bat-mythos (or maybe more accurately, the Gordon-mythos), and will likely have some screentime if there is a third movie.

In the credits for Batman Begins the baby is listed as James Gordon Jr. He's also mentioned in the Batman Begins novel. So the two films are out of continuity, unless he has three children, two boys and one girl. But that still doesn't make sense considering he would then have two sons with the same name.

- In Batman Begins Barbara (Gordon's wife) is feeding the infant James Gordon Jr. (James and Barbara's son) while Jim is talking to Batman.

- In the Dark Knight his son also listed as James Gordon Jr. is much older (about 9 or 10) and appears to have a sister. But considering the events in the Dark Knight are about a year after Begins, James couldn't have aged 9 years older.

I don't know. Just a small continuity error that all sequels have. I can easily look past this one.
