I personally rate this as the most underrated anime of all time. Even though the manga is 90+ volumes and has 7 story arcs, only 2 of the manga story arcs have adapted into anime form. The first one being the 3rd story arc, Stardust Crusaders, consisting of two OAV series. The second one being, the first story arc, Phantom Blood, which came out in theaters back in February, and I have yet to find a DVD =(. The manga series is currently being released by VIZ, but it's ludicrous they did not release the first two story arcs since they are necessary to learn the origins of Dio, the main bad guy, and Joseph, the grandfather of the good guy in the 3rd story arc. The anime is also out in America on DVD, though it will be a pain to find.

I strongly recommend this series because it is always evolving and offers its unique sense of action, story, and characters.

Basically each story arc of Jojo centers around a member of the Joestar family blood line taking place generation after generation. The first story arc is Phantom Blood and it takes place in the late 1800s in Victorian England. The main characters is Jonathan Joestar and it also gives the origin of Dio, who puts on an Aztec mask to become a vampire. Jonathan then learns a martial art called the Hamon which manipulates sunlight and to combat vampires.

The 2nd story arc, Battle Tendencies, takes place in the late 1930s and is centered around Jonathan's grandson, Joseph. Nazis are after the masks that turned Dio into a vampire and awakening the Gods that created those masks.

The 3rd story arc, Stardust Crusaders takes place in the 1980s (when the manga started publication and present time for its publication as well), and the main character is Kujo Jotaro, the grandson of Joseph, who is also a supporting character. Dio is back after a 100 year slumber and Dio's awakening introduces a new concept called Stands, astral warriors that take many shapes and forms, and has various unique and distinctive abilities. It's a unique kind of "psychic battle trait." Like, if you're not a stand user, than you cannot see stands duke it out. However, if a person's stand is hurt in battle, than the user will feel its pain, etc.

The 4th story arc is Diamonds Don't Break, it takes place in a town of stand users in the 1990s. The main character is Josuke, Joseph's illegitimate son. In the 3rd story arc, stands awakened as a result of a strong will. However, this saga introduces new means of obtaining stands via an ancient bow and arrow and introduces new stands with abilities as far as manipulating memories.

The 5th story arc, Golden Wind, takes place in the early 2000s in Italy. The main character is Dio's son, Giovanna. He wants to become the head of the mafia.

The 6th story, Stone Ocean, is about Jotaro's daughter Jolyne. She is sent to prison for a crime she did not commit and her father's stand has been stolen.

The 7th story arc, Steel Ball Run, takes place in an alternate time line. It now goes back to taking place in the late 1800s. This time, it takes place in the wild west and is about a race called the steel ball run which starts from san diego, and it ends in New York City.
