I completely disagree. He has shown he has what it takes to play any role. Hell, he could have played Batman IMO. We definately need an actor that can keep it dark and do what Jack Nicholson didn't pull off. He needs to be scary and creepy. Watch "Primal Fear".

Crispin Glover is the only person for the role. Anyone who thinks differently has no interest in the Joker, or simply doesn't know Crispin Glover's work. If you honestly believe old, ugly men could ever be the elegant, beautiful jester that Joker is meant to be, you truly have no clue what the hell you are talking about. True, both Cesar Romero and Jack Nicholson began the trend for old, ugly Jokers, but all Batman fans know the animated Batman series with Hamill's voice absolutely redefined the Joker. The lanky, elusive Joker is both youthful, energetic, skinny, and has a nose like Crispin Glover. To cast anyone else, would be to mock the vision created by those who truly cared about this great iconic villian. Shame on all who believe Del Toro, Penn, Pitt, Roth or any of these losers could ever approach the magnificent portrayal Hamill created.

Crispin Glover for Joker.

Clown "prince" of Crime isn't just a catchy nickname, his elegance and beauty is what makes him so damn easy to watch, and so shocking when he turns from absolutely ammusing to brutally insane/homicidal. Jack Nicholson was just homocidal, rarely elegant or ammusing.

You know, VenomFang, repeating it over and over and over again isn't going to make it happen.

Not only do I know his work, but I've met him. In person he isn't as odd as you would think but he is odd. Physically he isn't very tall but shockingly to me he isn't a thin guy. He actually looks fit.

To be honest, I just don't think he has the range to pull it off as well as a few others do. Just my opinion.

By the way VF, where do you get "Beautiful" and "Elegant". I wouldn't describe him as either of those. He's actually kind of clumsy....

you just made my case for me. common sense tells me that if i have two extremes, that the best pick is somewhere in the middle; a happy union of the two. Hamill looks horrible but has the voice. Glover looks like a joker but has a horrible voice. so they are both out of the running. next.

Uh, okay?

luke skywalker was irrelevant? anyways, Hamill did the best cartoon voice for the joker. that's it. that's his last claim to fame. he voiced something. seriously, have you seen the guy who voiced Sebastion the Crab from the Little Mermaid? he, get this, doesn't look anything like a crab; not even in red paint.

Argue the point or don't argue the point. Stop trying to be clever, as it just makes things even worse when you fail at it and/or overlook the topic.

Mark Hamill spent the last decade voicing the character in question, and his work is still considered by many to the best rendition of Joker yet. Why would any other role he's had be of any importance if he's already spent the last 10 years playing the role in question? He was Luke Skywalker. So? John Travolta was in Saturday Night Fever, Look Who's Talking, and all other random crap before he got his Pulp Fiction role. Yet, when the part for Chili in Get Shorty came around, he got it. And it was because of his work in one role that was perfect for to the role needed in Get Shorty.

If you're talking looks, then talk looks. Don't come up with some crap analogy as an attempt at humor.

i will pick on Mickey Rourke for being a crappy actor. i will applaud him for being a real life over-the-top thug though. now if Batman Begins were as surreal and self-mocking as Sin City, you might actually have a point.

You completely missed the point. But at this point, you're probably just trolling anyway, so it's not even much reason to explain myself any further.

and you say i make stupid analogies? unless Hamill is voicing a joker robot in the movie, what is your effn point? he doesn't look the part. that's my gripe. his default features make him a poor canvas for whatever makeup team creates the Joker. i don't even like Travolta and i can say that he's on a different level than Hamill. Hamill is subsisting off of voice work for a reason. and, just to remind you once again, this isn't a cartoon we're talking about. seriously, your way of thinking would have all of the voice actors starring in the movie. get a clue.

so, you basically gave up.

Sorry Muze but Hamill can pull it off

And yeah his "default features" arent great but thats what sfx makeup is for - Jack nicholson wasnt exactly joker material either

jokerhamill2.jpg

with little alteration of the guys face - this looks like somone you wouldnt want to see come at you on a bright day let alone a dark night

his eyes are like that - i've seen him do the bug out stare at a convention and the teeth can be prosthetics

remember this isnt comicbook joker - it doesnt have to be a skinny guy

As long as the performance is there and you have the bare mechanics of what makes the joker - you will not see the actor anymore but the true embodiment of chaotic madness

But yeah vincent cassel's good too - PHYSICALLY

Have you heard the guy talk English? Its hardly French free
Any American accent he'll pull off will sound like Chris Lambert in Highlander

If you had Cassels face and body and Hamills voice you'd have he perfect joker

But you dont need to do that if you have just Hamill - he can truly become the joker

The guys the 2nd choice on the board for a good reason

Hamill's too old.

Those I think could pull it off who's work I know so far?

Sean Penn

Tim Roth

and still my #1 pick, Ed Norton.

I would like to see for the first time a tall and young Joker like in the comics. So midgets and over 45 year old actors are already not an option for me. We've had already Jokers that don't resemble the comic. For once I'd like something like it.

Well how about Dr Crane goes totally loopy on the Fear gas and becomes Joker?

Theres someone that young tall and skinny enough for ya

Ach who cares

Sean Penn is Old and NOT the joker in any shape or form

I'll go for Tim Roth

But Tim aint exactly young or Tall either

By tall I mean as tall as Batman. 6'1-6'3 like in the comic. He's not just some nut, he's an imposing figure. No midgets please. I'd take an unknown for this role...

I've been in the "Crispin Glover as the Joker" camp ever since I first saw "Charlie's Angels". The guy really does look the part, and he's appropriately very, very creepy.

Unfortunately, he's also crazy as a friggin' loon!

I have a real concern that his sizeable "eccentricities" would get in the way of the movie that we ALL want to be successful. I doubt his ability to promote the film, and worst of all, I doubt his ability to work with other actors and the director. I can just picture this guy getting really out of control.

Bettany, on the other hand is a pro. He's an actor, with range, who can ACT crazy. He doesn't actually have to BE crazy. Until his name was thrown into the mix I hadn't ever considered him, but the more I think about it, the more I like the choice. I'm a huge fan of Master & Commander, and really liked what he did with that role. Yes, I know, his character in M&C was nothing like the Joker, but that's not my point. He's a good actor, and that's what this role of the Joker needs.

Oh, and if you think I'm exaggerating when I say that Crispin Hellion Glover is crazy, you need to see the trailer for his latest Director/Acting Independent "art film" project, "WHAT IS IT?".

(WARNING: The trailer contains nudity. Not for the faint of heart, or those who find all Downs Syndrome casts offensive.)

The boy ain't right.

Of course, nothing we say adds up to a hill of beans anyway, does it? It's not the decision of any one of us. It will be the decision of Nolan and his casting director. I'm sure they'll choose whoever they think is best.

It IS terribly interesting to watch various tribes just talk past one another on this forum though. Simultaneously tedious and entertaining. Thanks.

.....What on Earth? Wow.

The title of that movie sums up the big question in my mind after I finished watching the trailer. O_o

Paul Bettany, Jason Lee, Tim Roth, Vincent Cassel or Christopher Eccleston would be my top 5.
