I think Sean Penn would make a pretty good Joker.
Here's a quick manip that I did.

"Before the Batman showed up, Gotham City was a happy place. They had flowery meadows, and rainbow skies, and rivers made of chocolate, where children danced, and laughed, and played, with gumdrop smiles"

Heh.
Cool. A Cesar Romero style Joker.

I think that names like Tim Roth and Sean Penn are actually far more logical choices for The Joker than someone like Crispin Glover. They may not look exactly like the comic book Joker, but I think they could give a far better performance.

I stated this before, but who is Nolan more likely to cast? A largely unknown character actor with a reputation of being difficult to work with, who has nothing to offer other than looking the part? Or a largely respected character actor who will be an impressive addition to his starry high-quality cast line-up?

And I have to say, VenomFang, that your argument seems very misguided. First ,I have to state that calling great actors like Sean Penn, Benicio Del Toro and Tim Roth "losers", and even implying that they are in any way inferior to Crispin Glover, one of Hollywood's red-headed step-childs, is absolutely absurd.

Secondly, I have to say that I don't think you really have any idea about The Joker as a character. At his best, Joker should NOT be funny, in any way. He's not funny. He should be absolutely terrifying. He paralysed, and probably raped Barbara Gordon. He beat Jason Todd to death with a crowbar, and blew him up for good measure. he has killed and maimed thousands. This is not a funny guy. This is a twisted lunatic who wants to kill you. And he'll laugh while he does it.

And I don't get where this whole beautiful/elegant thing came along. No way. He's very theatrical, yes. But he has been horribly disfigured. He should be a disturbing sight, and therefore shouldn't be played by a pretty boy.

So, enough talk about Crispin Glover. I'd rather have someone who can deliver a great performance as The Joker rather than a great likeness. Everyone campaigning for Crispin Glover reminds me of the people who moaned about Kevin Spacey being cast as Lex Luthor, wanting Billy Zane in the role. Let's have a great character actor playing The Clown Prince of Crime. Penn, Roth, or Del Toro.

Johnny Depp for Joker.....

He is perfect. Since batman Begins was going for the realistic feel and less focus on special effects and gimmick, depp is perfect. He has this intrinsic ability to become a weird ad zany character. Jim Carey would be my second choice, but he's all about doing serious roles now. Also his bit as the riddler may be a problem with a lot of fans, as mentioned several times already. JD would be perfect and he already looks like the joker in Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory. I'm just glad that Depp was picked to be on this poll.........adios

Or maybe he can cast an unknown that is a great actor, in the style of a Cillian Murphy as the Scarecrow. I do agree with you vision of the Joker, but it should be added to that... the Joker from the comics is as tall as Batman. I want for the first time a physically imposing Joker... a 6'3 Joker.

Yes, but there are various elements of The Joker we should take into account:

- Tall, lanky build
- Twisted, dark sense of humour
- Strong sense of charisma
- A terrifying mean streak

The look is just one element of the character. Crispin Glover has never impressed me with his work. I say if he was cast, he'd be able to nail that first bullet point easy. But the other three? Unlikely.

Now take, let's say, Tim Roth. At 5 foot 7, he's not exactly what you'd call tall, though he could get the lanky part with a little traning. I have no doubt that he fills the other three points perfectly. Just watch his performance in "Rob Roy". He's a foul, evil character. But he is darkly funny as well, and has a charismatic sense of theatricality.

And as for the height thing, I want to again point to "Rob Roy". Watch the final sword fight between Tim Roth and Liam Neeson. Neeson was probably taller than Bale in "Batman Begins". In "Rob Roy", yes, Roth is noticeably smaller. But the height difference isn't anything ridiculous.

So, to summarise, I'd rather have a short actor who can nail hte character of The Joker perfectly than some mediocre actor who is only a popular choice because of his height and build.

Oh, and one more thing - yes, Paddy Considine rocks. I suggetsed him way back, but didn't have a pick to back it up...

I don't want Glover either. I think that's why the Hulme rumors are pretty interesting. The guy is scrawny and 6'3, and if the rumors are true of him being Nolan's favorite, then he must be a pretty solid actor. If these rumors are true Nolan has certainly taken the right direction. I think he'll pull a Cillian Murphy as the Scarecrow situation with the Joker. The star will be for the Dent role IMO.

He's an inch shorter than Batman, 6'1

That's almost no difference. The certain thing is he's not 5'10, which is the problem with most of the suggestions. The problem with the rest of the suggestions is they're pretty weak actors. We need a solid 6'1-6'3 tall ACTOR, not only based on looks.

WB has already stated that The Joker will not be played by some unknow actor.

I read some where.

There is no actor out there who has the full package.
Look I'm telling you guys, Edward F'n Norton.

6'1

Chameleon actor.

Not to old.

Not too fat or buffed.

Why the F not?!?!?!

The only fault I can give the guy is the bastard stole my woman!!!

We can talk about pleasing a small harcdcore fanbase all we want,. but the fact of the matter is that WB are probably thinking about pleasing the casual fan. So, in that respect, an actor needs to be cast that can be seen as living up to Jack Nicholson.

This is where I think a guy like Sean Penn could work. I was talking to my friend the other day. He is not a comic fan, but enjoyed "Batman Begins". I told him that Sean Penn was a possible candidate to play The Joker, and he got really excited! I think that's the kind of reaction that's going to be wanted. WB are wanting for someone who doesn't really follow Batman to say "Wow, HE'S playing The Joker!? That's going to be awesome!" And you're not going to get that reaction over an unknown who merely looks the part.

Everyone knows that The Joker's return to the screen is going to mean big box office. So WB are obviously going to make as much out of that as they can by casting a big name to furtheer add to the hype.

CRISPIN GLOVER FOR THE JOKER!!!

I wouldn't mind Crispin Glover as The Joker, just as long as his hair wasn't parted down the middle. He looks like a nerd when he does that. Plus, it reminds me of when he played Roger McFly in Back To The Future.

Here is Crispin with Joker hair

He kinda resembles Nicholson, but looks far more like the Joker. What a perfect choice

mmm i use to think that glover would be the best. but ive never NEVER seen him smile. plus his only acting role ive seen him in was a no speaking part. i think that alan cumming would be the perfect choice (he looks exactly like the joker from the killing joke) plus hes british, perfect choice for nolan. can some do a manip of alan as the joker....please

YES glover's doesnt smile, and in the photoshop images of him they always make his mouth bigger then it is. trying to trick the viewers. and dont say its nothing make up cant change cause i dont think theres make up to make someone have bigger lips or make them smile

i heard a few people say they wanted paul rubens for joker a while back so i did this
