Okay so there's been a bit of uncomfort about Heath hinting towards Joker wearing a mask. At first I thought (And hoped) he was referring to make up, or perhaps taking on another character but that chance has been seen as increasingly low. But I'm actually glad because I think I know what the Nolans have planned, hear me out.

For a while Joker is simply the killer with the homicide rep and theiving and such; he wears a clown mask that the remnants in the Fear Gas in the Narrows makes him appear something like Arkham Asylum's Joker. Anyway when Batman finally catches up to him something goes wrong, we bring in the Red Hood origin where the masked man comes in contact with chemicals; in this case something that bonds this mask to his skin. Black Mask's origin for Joker. I think it would work quite nicely and explain the clown like appearance as well as dulling my fears about Joker wearing a mask.

Thoughts? Opinions?

Sounds good to me. It does seem like a plausible origin for The Joker, and is actually pretty cool.

If you want my honest opinion, I don't like it.

Ledger's mask references are strictly metaphorical.

You know, I thought that too, but.. He's mentioned the mask issue TWICE now. Once has to start to wonder.. And worry..

Now, did you take that at face value? When you saw it, did you go, "why on earth does that gentleman want me to go for a walk in the nearby mountains?" Chances are, you didn't.

Why? Because you know it's a saying. You know it's figurative, and, if someone sitting next to you were to say what I paraphrased just a moment ago, wouldn't you think "boy, what's this *****e talking about?" Chances are, you would.

Now, granted, I'm not a big time stage actor like Kevin Spacy or Liam Neeson - I'm not very familiar with the lingo - and hell, sometimes celebrities say things that we mere mortals can't even understand (Mike Tyson: I'm going to rip his heart out, and feed it to his children) - but, to me, and many, "donning a mask" seems to be a classic figurative statement for an actor - particularly one playing a character in which he has to...submerse himself into.

Now granted, I could be wrong, but hopefully if that day ever comes - and this thread gets bumped - people will just think I was joking around with all of this.

He did try to sell me a piece of scrap metal the other day.

I didn't buy it, but I must say, it was a pretty fair price.
Those are my thoughts.

How does saying something twice change it from being metaphorical to literal?

I cannot even begin to tell you how much I HATE, HATE, HATE this idea.

I'd rather have Batman anal **** Robin, and then 'dirty sanchez' him in the movie than see that crappy idea come to life!

it wouldnt make sense for him to say he's he loves to wear makeup in a movie because he's an actor, he always has makeup on, so he said mask, meaning prosthetics. Thats how I interpreted it anyway.

Well, his choice of words the second time seemed less metaphorical to me- "don" a mask?

maybe its just me though.

How bout this? If it happens a third time we can all agree to get a little suspicious, LOL.

Either way, mask or no, I'm not fussed. As I Am The Knight says it's a plausible theory and if this mask thing is literal as opposed to metaphorical then I think that's how it should be done. Having said that I'd be equally fine with Red Hood or just make up, so long as we get a good Joker I'm damn happy. Still though, I do like the mask idea

I HATE the idea of a mask no matter how its done. One of the cool things about The Joker's character is that he looks the way he does, and its REAL. Its not make-up, its not a mask.

Ledger's masks comments were not literal. End of story.

but don't forget (from what I've heard) Nolan's trying to do something different with the Bat films. In the case that Joker's mask is in a literal sense, then that's fine by me, it's Nolan interpretting the Joker in his own way. If it's Red Hood, then fine, we're going back to Joker's roots traditionally. Personally I'd like to see something different with the Joker, it's interesting to find out how people see him.

Also, it's not just about Joker's make up, it's him as a being. Look past the Make up and he's still the Joker. If he had a mask on he would still be the Joker. It honestly sounds as though if he were to have a mask he would be a different person. Maybe it should be considered as a theory in itself and accepted.

But hey, that's just my two cents, take it or leave it :)

Will you **** me?

acting with your face completely covered in make up would be referred to as acting "en mask (or masque)". jack nicholson also referred to it as such and we damn well know he wasn't wearing a literal mask. white make up and prosthetics will "mask" your face. that's what he's most likely talking about.

Please! How many times do you need to be told ?!! HE DIDN"T MEAN IT LITERALLY, NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES HE SAID IT!!!! It's a common '"figurative" expression amongst actors, to don a mask means to take on another persona, to become someone else. That's all it means.

Indeed. Some of you people are god damn insane.

Apparently there's been another interview with him, where although he does use the term again, this time it's in a way that makes it almost clear it's strictly metaphorical.

"I love wearing masks. I like falling behind and into a character and I know this will be a beautiful mask to wear," Ledger said.

He's only speaking metaphorically. I mean, has he even done any roles where he's worn actual masks? I cant recall any, yet he claims to love "wearing masks".

Ledger confirmed that he meant "mask" in figurative meaning, so we shouldn't worry about it ;)

Dress Batman up in a pink tutu wearing a power ranger mask, but keep all his traditions and beliefs in, he'd still be Batman. Right?

...no. That argument has no validity. Taking away half of what makes the character is butchering it. Changes are fine, as long as there's still some of that classic look held in tact. Comic books are a visual medium. Looks very much play a role.

i really like that theory. i think it would play out well on screen. it could be the perfect explination for why he looks like a clown. i'd love to see that. good theory man

No, that's a terrible theory and an awful idea. Fortunately I don't think Nolan's that stupid.

Jack nicholson technically wore a mask in Batman. that nose wasnt his....
