Homecoming Jon Watts IS Marvel & Sony's 'Spider-Man' Director

That comparison sounds about right, though I think Watts is probably more comparable as a director to James Gunn or the Coen Brothers than Nolan.

While I think Levine would've been a great, if somewhat safe option to direct the film, I think Watts is a riskier, but hopefully more interesting/rewarding choice to spearhead the film.

He's not really comparing them, but showing the progression of batman directors. Burton was good, schumacher was bad, Nolan revitalized the franchise and made it great. Same for Raimi, Webb and now hopefully Watts. I really hope Watts is to spidey what the russos were to Cap, but I'm not gonna be surprised if he turns out to be more like say, Branagh and ends up getting replaced.

Kind of interesting that levine and that other guy dropped out.. makes it seem like they had no choice but to get this guy...

I haven't seen anywhere that the other guys "dropped out", meaning they've opted not to direct Spider-Man. Also, I find it very hard to believe that, especially since Levine seemed very eager to work with Marvel, following Kevin Feige on twitter and such.

Apparently he was getting annoyed at the process and worried that it would carry on to the production

Sources did not reveal the exact reason why Sony and Marvel chose Holland but as for Watts sources are now saying over the past ten days Levine and Melfi became frustrated with the process and worried this may carry over to the production and pulled themselves out allowing Watts to move in and land the job.

I think the better MCU comparison would be Joe Johnson for CA:TFA where Marvel felt he was perfect for that type of movie but not TWS.

Branagh wasn't replaced because they didn't want him but because the film schedule was too tight for him and he passed. Rumor has it they're
pursuing him for Ragnarok.

Of course he could just be underwhelming or a bad fit like Taylor for TDW who were seemingly never on the same page..

Reportedly Feige loved Watts pitch for Spider-man, and his Sundance darling Cop Car. That's how the Russos got TWS - they blew him away with their detailed and story boarded pitch.

Interesting... I doubt it means too much though. Levine would've been great, but I do think he would also be a bit of a safer option in comparison to Watts. Watts just seems to have a flat-out 'zanier' vibe in the premises of his films than what I've seen from the other shortlist directors, aside from the Napoleon Dynamite guy.

The sources could be their agents and PR because it looks better to drop out rather not be chosen. :cwink:

If true though I wonder if a frustration with the process could be a worry about dueling heads - Feige and Pascal/Rothman and worrying that approach would carry over to the movie.

I find this to be more credible than saying they've "dropped out". There's a reason why Jon Watts name was added to the shortlist of directors, and it seems that Kevin Feige himself handpicked him. If the others weren't really Feige's picks, I can see why they'd be "annoyed" by the process.

Webb wasn't really that unknown when he got chosen though. When you do a movie starring JGL it's still a big deal. He just did one with Kevin Bacon who was pretty much in chameleon mode the whole time.

Again like I said this morning. If it was true some of the names dropped out. We don't know why they decided to past. It could have been any number of things not to the film itself. As it is only still early in process and a script likely not even locked down yet. And a script that bound to go through many rewrites to film begins. It could have been either those goes didn't have a good pock. Or there vision wasn't what Kevin and sony wanted. To even as simple as potential tial schedule issues or any number of things. I don't see why folks have to jump the gun and think the film is doomed.

El Mayimbe also said that Asa was in final talks. :cwink:

El Mayimbe says a lot of things, just like a fortune teller or stage psychic. He just makes sure to only emphasize the things he got right in the past, and not all the misses.

Did Webb, or are you talking about Jon Watts?

I don't think Watts will be "the Nolan guy for Spidey". It's a little too unrealistic to even hope so. Sorry!

I don't think so either but we'll have to wait and see. Like I said, I wouldn't really be surprised if he ends up getting replaced. Hopefully he gets a solid script to work with

And I feel that Emperor Ming is THE villain role for Stormare. In Flash Gordon. Directed by Matthew Vaughn.

I think he could end up well for role. I am curious to see how things will play out.

According to this interview with Watts below, it seems that his two biggest influences as a director are Steven Spielberg and the Coen Brothers.

I think that actually makes a lot of sense and it should be interesting to see how Watts handles those influences and see how he looks at John Hughes for inspiration too.

Sounds good. I'm pretty excited to see how he tackles Spider-Man.

If John Hughes were alive today, do you think Feige would've gotten the man himself to direct Spider-Man?

I dunno. Hughes hadn't directed a film since the early 90's, I believe, and his last several films didn't fare very well. I kinda doubt it, though he'd definitely still be Feige's big influence for Spider-Man, I think.

John should do a marathon of all Hughes films before he starts full production.

Well, the high school ones at least. I don't think he really needs to watch Home Alone or Planes, Trains and Automobiles for this project.
