Jurassic Park to be re-released!

James Cameron Nearly Directed a 'Nastier' Jurassic Park

In a fascinating tease at what might have been, James Cameron, in a recent interview with The Huffington Post, revealed that he came very, very close to adapting Michael Crichton's Jurassic Park and that Steven Spielberg beat him in securing the rights "by a few hours."

What would a Cameron-directed Jurassic Park have been like?

"I'd have gone further," says the Avatar director. "Nastier, much nastier... [M]ine would have been 'Aliens' with dinosaurs."

Of course, Spielberg's take on the property is widely considered to be a modern classic and even Cameron admits that he probably wouldn't have been able match its cinematic charm.

"[W]hen I saw the film," he continues, "I realised that I was not the right person to make the film, he was. Because he made a dinosaur movie for kids... Dinosaurs are for 8-year-olds. We can all enjoy it, too, but kids get dinosaurs and they should not have been excluded for that. His sensibility was right for that film."

Spielberg's Jurassic Park was released in 1993, spawning two additional sequels. The following year, Cameron released True Lies before turning his attention to 1997's Titanic.

Jurassic Park will return to theaters in 3D on April 5, 2013.

As Cameron was in R rated mode back then I can imagine that his version would have been alot more violent than Spielberg's. Interestingly both Tim Burton and Richard Donner were also in the frame to direct JP.

Cameron said it pretty good, he would've gone all the way in violence but that would mean a lot of kids would not be able to see it. Also I am so pumped to see this movie again next year.

Much as I love Cameron's stuff, something about his comments up there seem vaguely condescending. I mean, that Spielberg he's talking about...

i dont think he meant that JP is a dumb kids movie.

Yeah, you're probably right. Just seemed like he was denigrating it a little bit. Like: "Oh, yeah! MY Jurassic Park woulda blown your freakin' nuts off! But Spielberg made a nice little kiddie movie, sure."

^I kind of got that same vibe too, Wesley. And honestly, if Cameron would've made JP like "aliens" but with dinosaurs he would've been horrible for the job. Part of Jurassic Parks charm is reliving the beauty of an era that once was...add a little adventure, action, and suspense and you have a great movie on your hands. I don't see how that would be done to the same effect if JP was made in the essence of aliens. And ironically, Cameron used MANY elements from JP in Avatar (he even went as far to use the same sounds for the T-rex on the thanator)...so this is slightly ironic.

Anyhow, I'm happy spieldberg got the job. He was quite literally PERFECT for it.

But if you read the rest, it's not as conceding.

Please have a trailer for this ready with The Hobbit.

A trailer for the release of my favorite childhood movie at the prequel to my other favorite childhood movie? That might be the greatest thing in the world.

First announced earlier this year, Steven Spielberg's 1993 classic is set to return to theaters on April 5, 2013 as Jurassic Park 3D. Today, the re-release's poster has come online and you can check it out below.

Next summer marks the 20th anniversary of Steven Spielberg's now-classic adaptation of Michael Crichton's novel, featuring a cast that includes Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Richard Attenborough and many more.

Check back tomorrow when Universal Pictures will be releasing a brand new trailer for the film.

Even if you're not going back to the Park, you gotta love that poster.

The concept of the poster is nice, but it just looks... lazy. Hopefully the re-release trailer is much better put together than the poster.

so if cameron made it we would have seen the true nedry death, if you've read the book its far more gruesome

And then there was a new, searing pain, like a fiery knife in his belly, and Nedry stumbled, reaching blindly down to touch the ragged edge of his shirt, and then a thick, slippery mass that was surprisingly warm, and with horror he suddenly knew he was holding his own intestines in his hands. The dinosaur had torn him open. His guts had fallen out.

Nedry fell to the ground and landed on something scaly and cold, it was the animal's foot, and then there was new pain on both sides of his head. The pain grew worse, and as he was lifted to his feet he knew the dinosaur had his head in its jaws, and the horror of that realization was followed by a final wish, that it would all be ended soon.

It would have been far more in line with the book.

Absolutely nothing wrong with Spielberg's interpretation - it was one of the movies that defined my childhood, but there was very little "charm" and "beauty" in the novel. The story was a very hard look at man's ability to create, and how ego and greed tarnish that. The dinosaurs were a bloody and terrifying example.

Anyhow, I'm happy spieldberg got the job. He was quite literally PERFECT for it.

I wouldn't say he was perfect - if one is looking at the movie as an adaptation of a book. Far from it. Don't get me wrong, I LOOOOOOVE JP1 for what Spielberg intended, but I would be lying if I didn't watch it and wish we could have gotten something that was a little more faithful to the plot and tone of the book.

Oh, I love that poster. Brings back the magic and mystery I associate with the film. I've got the Blu-ray and will endeavour to see the 3D release.

cameron does seem to have this self inflated ego, i mean he wanted to head a group to Certify 3D Filmmakers and films.

so his group would decide what was good enough to be 3d

Sounds good to me lol

At least people wont get cheated out to see another terrible converted 3D film.

sorry but i disagree, yeah we've had some crap but with camerons views a lot of stuff wouldnt have been released.

cameron wanted all films to be screen by him and his group and if they didn't meet his standards of story, etc it wasnt just released in 3d it wouldnt be released

JP is probably the only re-release I want to see. I never got to see it at the cinema, I was just a little too young.
