Jurassic World - - Part 11

My post was not a defense of Jurassic World. Read my posts I have never even claimed that Jurassic World was a good film let alone a great one. I only said that it was very entertaining.

Independent of my thoughts of Jurassic World, I would not classify the characters in the original as great, rich characters. The characters were fine for the monster movie genre but that's about it.
What makes it entertaining if the movie isn't good? I never understood that concept. I do enjoy movies I consider to be awful, but it is the way they are awful.

Maybe I have just seen JP way too many times, but I have always found the crew to be fantastic. There depth isn't left to long scenes of exposition, but their actual actions. Much like a Indy or Marty. Grant is one of the great heroes of cinema imo.

as for people criticising JW to the bone.....really?

The whole premesis of the movie is unrealistic. The first movie in itself, JP, was nonsense. It's a romantic theory accidentally stumbling upon dino-dna from a captivated mosquito. To be able to turn that into a breedable 'thing' first of all by any science notion is impossible, not even to mention the diverse fauna of dino's suddenly spawned through somehow abundant mosquito remains is without saying the most unbelievable theory ever.

And as for charactirisation? JP1 had a diverse amount of characters. It was great, but if you break it down, it was a mess. Why would the approval of the park need two paleantologists? The lawyer was not neccesary, mr. Malcolm seemed more like a guy that got thrown a bone because mr. Hammond lost a bet to end up there, and the kids? Really? you send 2 kids on a maiden voyage in a killer dino park where most of the material did not even work well?

All in all - what i'm saying - you can hammer down any movie without a single effort. Just look at the Cinemasins 'Everything wrong with' editions.
And they're fully right!

But the thing is, was it entertaining? yes, it was, it was worth it double time.

The first JP1 offcourse was ground-breaking on so many levels, that you never ever are able to 'do better'.

Personally, I think every JP movie has been great.

I loved the lost world, i loved jurassic park 3 [even though the kid was annoying and the spino always looked weird], and i adore Jurassic World.

knowing the idiotic 'prototype sketches' for the original planned 'jurassic park 4' movie, i'm glad that project crumbled apart and was never made into any real substance. Looks more like some resident-evil rpg game idea rather then a decent JP movie.

I really loved this movie, though if i were to be a bit too critical,
i felt the 'nature' of the animals was a bit too much put aside in favour of a visual cinema experience of human-dinosaur interaction.

The characters imho were great. I would have enjoyed a bit more of an 'ode' to John Hammond, and respect to the original park. Mr. Masrani was a great character, i was sad to see him go like that.

I liked how the movie did have a good family-time humour in it, and greatly enjoyed the opening when the kid enters the car after saying goodbye to his local high school romance.

So looking like about $55m on 3rd weekend at the moment according to deadline.

This movie is definitely going to have its haters since it's making lots of money. I enjoyed the movie a lot but it does have its flaws. The kids in this movie weren't as fleshed out as Tim and Lex and were overall pointless. The dumb parents getting divorced subplot was also stupid and added nothing to the story. But everything else was fine with me!

Rich characterization in Jurassic Park? That's the funniest thing I've read in days. Dem rose colored glasses are beyond strong. I agree that the characters were better in JP but rich they were not.

Agreed. The JP series has never been distinguished for "rich characterization", the characters have always been wafer-thin.

The most I'll say is the characters in JP felt more "whole" than anyone who's come along since, but that's not saying much.

Probably the most "character moment" in the whole series is the dinner conversation between Hammond and Ellie after the T-Rex breaks out, where Hammond is babbling on about flea circuses and you can tell he's trying to convince himself everything is alright and has gone slightly into shock/denial/la-la-land and needs Ellie to yell at him and snap him out of it.

At the core, the Jurassic Park franchise is not 'high art' - it's entertainment. We just have to have a few details of each character before the mayhem starts.

At least the JW characters aren't color-coded like Power Rangers to help kids determine who is who... Nevermind....

Universal projecting $54.2m for the weekend and $500m total in just 17 days, breaking the previous $500m speed record held by The Avengers at 23 days. Pretty amazing. I didn't think that would happen this quickly after the Thursday number seemed kinda low. It had huge increases on Friday and Saturday.

For all my grievances with Jurassic World, this tops Park in one regard. When I reviewed Park, I complained about how I didn't find the park practical at all. Here in World, I find it mostly plausible. Gyrosphere cars cruising around dinosaur packs, a sea tank for a creature, baby dinosaurs used as a petting zoo, etc. I thought the park was well done, and it made me want to go there, nevermind the danger it looks too awesome. I went expecting fun, and that's what I got. Way more than I was expecting. One thing I noticed about the audience here is that you could feel the thrill of what the audience were feeling when watching this. And it's been a long time since I heard people go "ahhh" and "no" or other reactions that put the audience on the edge of their seats.

The gyrosphere cars were the only aspect of the park that I didn't buy. I could imagine some sort of guided tour, but just giving them a bumper car and setting them loose in a plain full of huge animals? Not likely. I agree, otherwise, that the park itself was one of the best parts of the movie.

Anyway, my assorted thoughts on the movie, having just seen it last night:

- As has been widely discussed, the plot hinges on pretty much nobody at the park having any common sense, but that's true of every installment of the franchise, so I don't think you can use that as a reason to deride this one in comparison to the first movie (which is better, don't get me wrong).
- Anyway, there's some real imagination here, and most of the best parts relate to the running of the park (which we've never really seen before; I think the premise of dinosaurs be loose in a fully operational park could have been taken a lot further; apart from the pterodactyl swarm, the crowd really doesn't feature at all in the drama) and the climactic fight.
- On the negative side, some of the CGI dinosaurs are remarkably unconvincing (the scenes of the kids roving amongst the herbivores, especially).
- Regarding Bryce Dallas Howard's character arc, and the debate around it, I think it is a pretty obvious attempt at homage to Grant's arc in the first movie (down to the reason why the kids are visiting the park), but, quite apart from how cliched that arc has become, somebody involved with the production should have realized that that sort of story has very different cultural implications when given to a female character. It just does. That said, I thought Howard did a good job, and the character becomes a lot better as the movie goes on (which is partly the point, of course, but the point being made is itself the issue).
- Did anybody else think that Pratt's final line feels like it should be a callback to some earlier line of dialogue, but there isn't any such prior exchange in the movie?

Yeah the hamster balls were odd, since there was no way to bring them back in. It was just a blip on their screen "ride over, come back". I'd assume they'd send someone out to tow them away or something.

-Yeah, everyone there but Pratt was an idiot. My friends and I were arguing he should have been put in charge since he wasn't a giant **** tard.
-Yes, the CGI dinosaurs actually don't hold up well. I prefer the original. It's like Star Wars all over again NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
-Howard's character yeah and I see what you're getting at, having different implications being a woman, you're probably right. Being a man, I don't know exactly what those implications are. And the kids do feel a bit forced. Do we really need them.
-I get what you mean by Chris' line but I got it.

I think Ted 2 ****ting the bed really helped JW and Inside Out during the weekend.

Ted 2 is Universial's first big disappointment after constant stellar performances. Guess it had to happen eventually.

I couldn't buy the gyrospheres either. A park like that would never give full control of a vehicle over to unsupervised guests.

Box Office Mojo says is estimating 1.24 billion worldwide. Crazy. Definitely seeing it hit top 3 worldwide. Took in another 100 million more in China. I'm guessing it will be over 400 million by the end of it's run.

I took my niece and nephew on Friday and they both want to see it again.

I don't follow BO numbers these days but this is doing incredible, very pleased for Treverrow. :) So is it likely to get the #2 of all time worldwide spot? As obviously it wont catch Avatar.

2B WW? Can it really do that? 1.5B would be great.

American movies only play in China for month, it's going to get nowhere near 400 million over there.

I think it's still possible. It's had good/great legs so far so if it keeps it up it could definitely make it there.

I wouldn't call it a big disappointment so much as mediocre performance. Chances are it should still do good enough for another sequel. I do think the biggest factor for the drop in numbers is the competition.

The one thing this movie does differently is that they didn't kill off the lone black guy in the movie unlike in JP in which SLJ was killed.

So I just saw that the movie is now at 500 USA so I would have to think 600 is a lock as the movie has only been out for just over 2 weeks. I saw the movie is now at like 1.2 billion or something. So is it a lock to make 2 billion WW.

2 billion? By Gargamel's nose!

No, it's not a lock for $2B. #3 worldwide seems like a good bet, though.
