Just watched all 3 back-to-back.....

Well I finally did a 3 in 2 days viewing (best I can do, I cannot sit watching TV, particularly the same movie story for 6 1/2 hours straight).

My thoughts:

The movies works well as a trilogy. Mostly from the angle that it is about these three dumb kids who learn about life in a superhero environment. Peter/Harry/MJ make these movies as a triogy have any depth that they would otherwise be lacking. They are dealing with the sins of their "fathers" (Peter's guilt over failing to live up to Uncle Ben's ideals, Harry failing to live up to scumy Norman's ideals and MJ just having a **** father that hurt her young adult life treamendously).

Watching them go from the hope-filled childish teens at the beginning of the first movie to the ultra-close depressed and worn grown ups at the end of the third movie is actually really well done. That thorough line is fun to see. And that is why GG being the first villain, as Harry's father makes sense and how he haunts EVERY character in the series (even Ock, as he was employed by Harry in this rush job to outdo Norman) throughout all three movies works. Ock is the most visually amazing and well performed by Molina, albeit he may seem the most remotely connected of the three, he is in the best movie and rocked the world. Venom even makes sense of being the very last villain because the whole trilogy Peter is learning how to grow up and be a good man and Eddie is everything Peter could have been without Uncle Ben's teachings, comittment to MJ or Aunt May and a noble conscious, etc. etc. Venom being the last defeated worked in this context.

As individual films though, 1 has a childlike wonder and fn level similar to S'78 and is a lot of fun. SM2 is still hands down the best one as it is just so well executed. The acting, the story, the direction, the pacing and the very smart screenplay all work to a flawless ending.

SM3 is both helped and hurt in view of this context. It's flaws compared to the first two movies (too many characters, too much subplot, the underdevelopment of Sandman and Venom and ccertain plot holes like MJ caving on Peter at the first sign of risk) are more readily apparent than ever. But at the same time it is strengthened as seen as act III of this over-arcing story and makes the ending of the movie more satisfying. It also makes any scene involving Peter's relationship with MJ, Harry or MJ and Harry feel more natural and provides a more satisfying (if downbeat) ending.

So in the end I think it hurts and helps SM3, but as a trilogy it is quite strong. Moreso than Pirates or X, anyway. But Star Wars, it ain't.

My 2 cents.

I agree with this mostly, except i think the Pirates Trilogy and Spiderman Trilogy are virtually on par with each other in terms of quality. The X-Men trilogy might also have bettered both if we had gotten the proper X3 IMO.

But yeah, as one big story, the Spiderman trilogy fits together pretty damn well, and is a good trilogy in my eyes also, a better than many of us may have hoped for in fact. And i do think watching SM3 in the context of the trilogy, rather than as an individual movie, helps me to enjoy it a lot more.

Oh I hate the Pirates trilogy. While I enjoy the first movie inmmesnely as one of the best popcorn flicks of the decade, its sequels are horrendous, particularly the third movie.

I think Spidey isn't in the upper-echelan of cinema trilogy classics like Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Back to the Future and The Godfather. But with a weak link but a solid trilogy is on par with the likes of say maybe the Indiana Jones trilogy or arguably the Dollars Trilogy. Certainly above the X-Men, Pirates, Terminator and Matrix trilogies though.

Well said, DACrowe.

I have to disagree, with the 2 bolded one especially. With X-Men, if we had gotten an X3 which reached even half of its potential i think it would have been a better trilogy. And as i have said earlier, i think the POTC trilogy and Spiderman Trilogy are just about on par (I loved the 3rd POTC), if i HAD to choose between them, i would probably pick Spiderman by a hair.

As for the Terminator trilogy, sure the 3rd one was average, but the first two (especially the first one for me) are masterpieces, and NO Spiderman movie is as good as either of them IMO.

As for the Matrix trilogy, Spiderman does beat it, but again, not by much for me.

Agree with you there--it is hard to pick which trilogy--but for me Pirates wins by the skin of its teeth. The reason is that their movies you can watch with your buds and pretty much have a good time watching, in my opinion.

Pirates sequels were just awful IMO. I jsut think POTC3 had no plot, no structure and was a snorefest that was mindless CGI and Johnny Depp.

I simply don't like Terminator as a trilogy. The first two are classics, but the inclusion of a third part added nothing but completely detracted from the first two and has no reason for existing, as I say about the Pirate sequels. I may not care for Godfather Part III, but it added to the story and wraped up Michael Corleone's life in a fitting and poetic way (and watching the family fall back once again into the mafia).

Just saying.

Honestly, the first film isn't that great either. All three are basically big dumb popcorn movies. My favourite is the second not because of any coherent plot or anything like that, but simply because I feel the gags work better and that is basically what this series is about. It is more like a poor man's Monkey Island than a classic pirates movie.

You don't compare the Spidey trilogy with the Pirates trilogy. The Spidey series relied on heart and emotion (which is why Spidey 3 disappointed many fans, it tried to make things look like it's still about heart and emotion, but it's not anymore), while Pirates was all about jokes, all about spectacle, all about crazy antics from Sparrow. Black Pearl was the only good movie in the pirates series. And Spidey 3 is the only disappointing (disappointing, but not bad) movie from the spidey series.

Actually, Terminator 3 doesnt detract from the story at all. In T1, the future WAS inevitable, so it could be argued that T2 is the one that doesnt fit with the trilogy.
