Justice League Justice League Box Office Prediction - Part 7

We're obviously going to single out JL since this is the JL BO thread but Black Panther has already outgrossed other major franchise too such as Star Trek and James Bond. It's a testament to the strength of Black Panther, the weakness of Justice League and the continuing shattering of notions of what is a box office franchise.

But Bond didn't really start making serious box office money until the last 2 films (Skyfall did make $1.1B WW) , and the Star Trek movies even with the reboots weren't ever top grossing movies either.

Which is partially my point. They're are name franchises that people may assume to be automatic box office royalty and they're not really. A-list names of franchises that aren't as impressive domestically as you might think. You can now have have b-level comic book characters the GA has never heard of like Iron Man, Deadpool, Guardians, and Black Panther outgross known franchises now. This is a good thing.

Black Panther was basically manufactured to be a monster hit. Justice League was arguably the most glaring example of studio mismanagement that I've seen. Are you really that surprised?

Manufactured?

You can't manufacture old ladies going to see it straight from the church.

I'm surprised Black Panther was so successful that it surpassed JL in just over half a week.

Only liars can tell me that was expected.

I'm shocked BP outgrossed JL already. Never in a million years did I think it would do that when either film was announced. I thought it might do okay and then you heard it was going to do even better but it's still amazing.

Do you even understand what I said? "Manufactured" in terms of being a different type of superhero movie, in terms of marketing, timing, being the first black-led film in a multi-billion dollar franchise, opening during Black History Month on President Day weekend, relevancy to the current sociopolitical climate, etc. When it comes to wish fulfillment type characters for a black superhero, you pretty much can't go any higher than a king of a technologically advanced African nation. I don't need to mention the amazing cast. What is it about any of this that I'm "lying" about? It had all the aspects that were going to make it a certified hit. Nobody in their right mind expected it to NOT be a hit, the only question was HOW big of a hit was going to be. After the critical reception hit and the tracking numbers got bigger and bigger, we all got our answer.

Be more careful next time you decide to accuse me of being a liar.

None of that fits the definition of manufactured. A perfect storm is a better description. Not even the most optimistic projections from weeks ago came close to predicting this sheer monster.

I still think the saddest thing about this thread is the guy who didnt put any option for below 700 mill.

Like it was such a guarantee that this was going to do no less, and it never made it there. Its such a ****** reminder.

Everything Marvel/Disney did about the movie's production, promotion and release was about making as much money out the gate as possible. It was a lesser known property and it made sense, that's what a movie studio should do. I'm not criticizing them for it, as far as I'm concerned more power to them. I pointed out why Disney did everything in their power to make sure it was poised to be successful. Coogler and the cast and crew are the reason why it got THIS big, but it was never going to bomb or underperform even if the reception had not been on the same level. That was the "manufactured" aspect I was referring to, the comment was never meant to discredit the movie's success, it was to point out why it was the polar opposite of JL's performance and why it made no sense to compare the two given the circumstances.

:lmao:

Audience don't make a decision just based on how the earlier movie performed (there are other factors also.), for example Quantum of Solace didn't do well but the next Bond movie Skyfall did very well.

Also, if MoS was a bad movie why did people show up to see BvS ? Going by the logic Mendelson gives, BvS should have earned only $ 400 mil, a drop of 40 % from the first movies' collections.

Batman. Which is why they went the route that they did with BVS, rather than making Man of Steel 2. They knew that a Man of Steel sequel would be a loser, so they upped the ante by throwing in Batman and Wonder Woman. And it worked, at first, until people saw the movie and came out of it just as sour as they came out of Man of Steel. So when they tried to up the ante yet again with Justice League, people saw through the transparent attention grab and stayed away. Consider it a case of "Fool me twice, shame on you, fool me three times, shame on me."

It's (not needed) proof that there is no genre fatigue, just audiences being careful of bad movies.

It still blows my mind that we have a C-List hero like Dr. Strange, and his movie made more money than Justice League. And now in four days Black Panther made more money domestically than Justice League did in its entire run?!? A movie about a character who, up to now, was basically a B-List hero. A cut above Dr. Strange, but not on the same level as Superman, Spider-Man, Batman, etc. And Black Panther just trounced all of DC's heavy hitters.

People at Warner Bros. must be looking at those numbers and pitching a fit right now. There's no way they cannot be asking themselves why they're not making movies which are pulling in those kinds of numbers... because they should be. We've had two solo Batman movies make over $1 billion each, and Wonder Woman's first outing make over $800 million. Warner Bros. is sitting on a potentially multibillion dollar film franchise and they're pissing it away. They're not only making it unsuccessful films, but they're damaging multiple character brands. Rather than profiting off their characters, they're devaluing them.

And they've been doing that for years. It's sad. If Green Lantern was a Marvel character, he was going to have a billion dollar franchise years ago.

Absolutely. It'd be pulling in Guardians of the Galaxy money at the very least. $773-$863 million, rather than the $219 million it actually made.

To be fair...WB deserves its share of blame.

Its had the DC ENTIRE catalogue for years. YEARS.

And decided only to make Superman and Batman movies, until MCU happened and forced their hand to do more.

Well MOS was done to avoid losing rights to the Seigal estate.

WB has been entirely reactionary, totally reliant on Batman and Superman, unwilling to put decent money into anything, and too dependent on directors to basically bail them out.

Throw in doing throwaway movies like GL, Catwoman, Jonah Hex out there.

TDKT kept a lot of people from seeing just how clueless WB has been all this time. I'm glad they're finally getting the kick in the teeth they deserve. Hopefully they'll course correct and make a plan. You know, like an actual plan, and not just the usual posturing and flailing about.

Yep. Meanwhile, Marvel had to make do with basically 50% of their universe, and not even the most popular half. The X-Men? At Fox. The Fantastic Four? At Fox. Daredevil? At Fox. Spider-Man? At Sony. Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, all B-List characters. For ages, the Avengers were the boring team nobody really cared about in comparison to the X-Men. But Marvel took those second-stringers and made the most out of them, and then did the same with C-List and even D-List characters like the Guardians of the Galaxy.

If Marvel is seeing so much success with even the likes of the Guardians of the Galaxy, then there's no reason whatsoever than an icon like Superman shouldn't regularly be pulling in a billion dollars or close to it every time he gets a movie. Same for Batman, whose last two solo movies made over $1 billion each. The box office proceeds for Wonder Woman should be the norm for many DC characters, whose popularity vastly outstrips that of many of Marvel's characters. Movie for movie, a DC cinematic universe could easily pull in more box office proceeds than the MCU, but instead of making the most of DC's potential, Warner Bros. is busy squandering it with one bad movie after another, with only Wonder Woman highlighting how great the movies could be, in terms of both film quality and box office proceeds, if they were done right.

Eh, still feel like some of you are still stuck in that Superman nostalgia. His rep was tarnished even before MOS.

But if ya'll want to look at the bigger pic, we all screwed. lol

JUMANJI has also passed 13 out of the 17 MCU movies at the box office and all DC films.

Didn't stop MOS from breaking the june record and being the 2nd highest grossing non sequel film up to that point.
The movie sold 129 million dollars worth of tickets in it's opening weekend, that tells me that people were looking forward to seeing another superman movie. The movie then underperformed because basically half the audience thought it was a piece of s***, while BvS underperformed because almost all of the audience thought it was a piece of s*** and lastly JL flopped because everyone caught on to the fact that Snyder's DCEU movies are a piece of s***
