I know a lot of fans didn't particularly care for the character of Rachel Dawes, but she was important to Nolan's Batman films.

She was a moral guide for Bruce Wayne, showing him the difference between justice and revenge in Batman Begins and encouraging him not to lose faith in people in The Dark Knight (Even though Bruce never read the letter, her message still carried through during the ferry sequence, since Bruce never for a second expects the people of Gotham to push the button)

She was also Bruce's last hope of a normal life and her death will most likely have a serious impact on Bruce's character in the next Batman film.

I originally preferred Katie at first. (I hate recasts because it breaks the illusion when two people play the same character and sortof takes you out of the film)

But a lot of her dialogue in Batman Begins was Kraft American Cheese, So i'm leaning more towards Maggie now.

Maggie. She so much of a better actress than Katie Holmes (not that Holmes is terrible or anything) and actually made Rachel a real, empathetic character. Not to mention she was much, much better written in The Dark Knight as opposed to Batman Begins.

Maggie. She is Laurence Olivier compared to Katie.

i was so happy to see her blown up hah i hated that character.

Maggie was the better Rachel, imo.

But Katie was the better looking out of the two. Some of the facial expressions Maggie pulled in some scenes were erm...less than flattering to her.

For me, a tie.
And, just to add, I never understood all the Katie Holmes as Rachel hate. And don't bother to try to explain why you hated her, I don't really care.

Maggie is world's better as an actress than Katie. And I never understand all the 'fugly' talk either...she might be average, but she's not that bad!

Then don't bring that up.

Maggie by a million miles.

This post is epic, on so many levels.:hehe:

Maggie was a lot better and would of loved to see her in batman begins. To me shes not the hottest of women, and played that role perfectly in the sense she believed in strong values, which I personally loved.

Even tho Maggie face looks like a foot she is a better actress so Maggie wins. And Crooked smile Katie loses.

Maggie without a doubt.

In TDK, Rachel kneed Joker in the balls. IMO, that small action showed more strength of character than the whole of Batman Begins Rachel, including her defeating Scarecrow with her taser.

BB Dawes had a holier than thou attitude which made her an annoyance. Maggie certainly improved the character to make her more likable.

I don't get it either. I think people just have a silly bias against her simply because she's married to Tom Cruise.

Katie did have a lot of corny dialogue in Begins, but that's really the fault of a bad script, not her performance. Maggie didn't have that problem when she got the role for TDK, which had little to no cheese in the script.

Even though her performance wasnt up with the rest of the cast, i have to vote for Katie Holmes. At least i could believe she was Rachel Dawes. With Maggie, oh dear. I just couldnt believe for a second she was the character and actually found her performance a bit annoying at times and distracting.

I voted for Maggie. She felt like a woman. Katie felt like a high school girlpromoted to a position she did not have the competence to really be effective in and trying way too hard to hang with the grown ups.

 She looked like a little girl playing adult.

My favorite is in my avatar.

My thoughts exactly.

At last El Payaso, we our in agreement about something. This is a great day! Tonight, we celebrate with ribs! :cwink:

Honestly don't understand the hate toward Katie Holmes' performance in this. She portrayed 'a cute little Assistant D.A.' (Flass quote) who was completely out of her depth with relative ease, and also brought a lot of warmth to a severely underwritten role which could quite easily have come across as austere and smug (see Maggie Gyllenhaal's take on the character).

There was no warmth in Katie's performance, which was so wooden it could have been used for kindling in someone's fire. And Katie was plenty smug in her lectures to Bruce and attempts to sound "tough" with Crane and the bridge guard.

My only problems with Katie were: she looked to be about 16 in BB; and she frequently had this strange lop-sided smirk on her face when she delivered her lines. I didn't even see that until some other poster here pointed it out and now I can't stop noticing it.
