Keanu as Plastic man

I'd never thought anyone would ever even consider making an Plastic Man solo-movie. Can he even carry a movie? I've only read couple of JLA issues where he was.

I dont rule out any character as potential film property. they each bring something different. Plastic Man in particular is about a goofball who can morph into practically anything (working parts in all), stretch, and is basically indestructible. Jokes, action, cool powers, nice backstory (ex-theif turned hero)

I think the better question isn't whether or not Plastic Man can carry a movie, but rather whether or not Keanu Reeves and the Wachowskis can still carry a movie.

No. It shouldn't be an R-rated comedy. Plastic Man isn't R-material. Why do people always want to take comics that are appropriate for all ages and turn them into vulgar, R-rated films. Its the same way with the Spirit. People want these movies to be R-rated when their is no need for it.

Well he did have a animated series...and very well known...why can't be carry one?

yea if written well, has a good director, good cast, and is marketed in the right way it could be a good film/series. As for who to play since i dont really know the character i dont know who would be the best person for it. Though i agree matt lillard would be a cool option, loved his shaggy in the scooby doo films.

Plastic Man is best suited for a comedy, because he has never really been a serious character. R-rated comedies and dark films are the in thing nowadays and I don't think that Plastic Man is conducive to a dark film (although you could make his origin dark by emphasizing a violent gun battle, showing lots of blood and a horrific accident while being doused with chemicals - Actually that could give it the R rating). Also, it seems like a lot of comic fan boys here are not too fond of soft kiddie movies. This is why I suggested it.

Examples of R-rated comedies:

40-year-old Virgin
Don't be a Menace to Society when You are Drinking Juice in the Hood.
Coming to America
Knocked Up
Club Dread
Boat Trip
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

This is the poster to the last film I listed. It almost looks like Plastic Man.

I agree.

That's probably because when Hollywood does do them they don't make them intelligently which can entertain adults and kids or as good as similar movies which aren't comic based.

We needs more Incredibles, not Fantastic Fours.

I still have Matthew Lillard as Shaggy (another WB property) in my mind. It's going to take some time for me to get him as Plastic Man.

I thought that "Night at the Museum" didn't insult my intelligence. Now, granted, that wasn't a comic book film, but it was an adaptation of a (children's) literary work.

It's sad though that it was kind of a parody on the FF. "The Incredibles" was a heart warming story that had something to make all fathers proud, though.

Haven't seen that yet. Didn't know it was based on a book.

That's exactly what I thought of it, too.

Only the greatest comedian of the last twenty years can possible pull this role off!!!

"The Night at the Museum" and "Night at the Museum"
(click to see details on each)

Yes, the film was based off a children's book by Milan Trenc. I think that had a lot to do with the popularity of the film along with the fact that Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson were in it. The monkey was hilarious.

Ben Stiller in "Night at the Museum"
(a Plastic Man moment)

I could see a film like this with Stiller as the lead and Wilson as his side kick. That is, of course, if Carrey and Carell were not available to do it.

**UPDATE** Reader Ballack, who provided CHUD with the original details wanted to share with us the highlights of the radio interview. Here's what he wrote in his e-mail:

- James McTeigue is having a blast directing Ninja Assassin. Says its going to be an old school Hong Kong influenced fight fest whilst keeping with the traditional Japanese style.

- Looking to be a R rated movie with no exceptions being made to the integrity of choreography prepped by David Leitch and Chad Stahelski with insight on behalf of fight consultant Yuen Woo-ping.

- The Wachowski's are involved with blocking all the complex fight scenes with James taking lead on dialogue related scenes.

- Says he loves working in Berlin and is looking to move to London shortly to begin prep on the post production.

- With the nitty gritty out of the way, he started a heavy discussion on a subject known to many comic book fans called Plastic Man. This is what i have been able to recall.

- The Wachowski's are using their original 1996 script which he says would have been the most expensive movie ever made had it been green lit back then.

- With the recent disappointment regarding Speed Racer, the Brothers decided it was time to give the fans what they want (Old school Wachowski production). He says the boys are prepping the movie the way they did it on the first Matrix with the intention of blowing **** up like never before.

- Movie will focus on Action, Character and then special effects. Says the Brothers feel the world can't handle another movie ten years ahead of its time (Speed Racer), however, they will be putting action scenes together that will follow the format of the first matrix with the first half of the movie detailing the plot/character and the final half being non-stop action.

- Here's the big announcement. Joel repeated this twice, Keanu Reeves will be playing the character of Patrick "Eel" O'Brian a.k.a Plastic Man. Joel mentioned the Brothers felt it had been too long since they last collaborated and feel they will only ever now work with him for all their future movies.

- Looking for a Dec 09 release world wide. Tentative to change if effects work is delayed.

You know what makes the choice of Keanu to play O'Brian interesting? The fact that it isn't obvious.

Remember, Reeves started playing dimwitts, funny characters, and did some very tong in cheek comedies when younger (I Love You To death, with William Hurt comes to mind). With a proper script, mindblowing effects and Reeves finding his inner Ted Logan again, this could really have potential to surprise.

Will Arnett, Jim Carrey and Matthew Lillard are all good choices

(a franchise of two films and two cartoon seasons)

This is true, but Eel O'Brien/Plastic Man is not necessarily a dimwitt. This is a bad guy turned good with comedy involved and guys like Carrey, Carell, or Stiller have done that. Just like TheComicbookKid quoted:

DANE COOK

That's who this job is for.

But you know that a Plastic man with Dane Cook would make ZERO box office worldwide. Carrey is too "Mask" for the job, Carell just don't fit... Stiller would be a good choice.

I am still thinking about Keanu... it is difficult to imagine but, just wonder if the guy pulls it off?
