Point 1 - I think Rey illustrates that point far better than anyone and rather than waste time on the casino subplot, such time could've been spent fleshing out Snoke and establishing that like Rey, he is really no one special: just someone who had aptitude in the force and used the power vacuum to seize control for himself. That demonstrates it on both sides of the aisle.
Point 2 - But that theme ultimately went no where. Its not plot exposition if it is just a throw away monologue that never comes up again. Plot exposition, by nature, needs to move the plot forward. Establishing that there are rich people who profit off of wars did not do that as it held no relevance in the grand scheme of things.
Point 3 - Was that scene really so crucial that it required a thirty minute detour? Hell, I'd argue that scene works as a stand alone scene, without the subplot. Just have some kid getting pushed around by a First Order Stormtrooper or something and you have the same exact result when he looks up at the stars hopefully.
Rey can't be an "everyman." She's well past that in name recognition alone.
The director obviously felt that a random, no-name tech whose even-more-no-name sister sacrificed herself for the idea of the Rebellion and fighting against oppression is a better connective tissue. There might be better ways of doing this, yeah. But this is what happened in the movie and I accept it for what it is.
