Kenneth Branagh to direct Thor

I hate to *****,,,but is Kenneth Branagh the guy to direct Thor? It seems like a ridiculous choice to me. So many other directors are out there who could make Thor an incredible movie, I mean come on guys...is this the best choice we have? You're making me ill. Please don't treat Thor like some second rate movie and give it to an actor who has barely directed. If you give Thor the right treatment it could actually do very well at the box office.

Clearly you have no idea who Kenneth Branagh is. Watch Hamlet and Henry V and then get back to us.

Sorry, I didn't state that very clearly. Let me rephrase. A week ago they ran a piece saying he was in negotiations. And, just yesterday, they listed him as the director amongst a bunch of other confirmed directors. I'm not sure how from-the-studio the second one is, but I take it as a kind of confirmation that he's signed on.

Who's the girl in your avi?

My only knock is that he was the lead in both films... obviously that won't be the case if he's directing Thor. He has a lot to prove but the pedigree is there.

He was Dr Frankestein too.. but the main character on that one was his creation

Sounds like Branagh is signed on. (bolded the relevant part)

Grandage Directs Law's Hamlet, Delays NT Debut
Date: 14 October 2008 Kenneth Branagh - who is currently starring in Ivanov, the first production in the Donmar West End season – has pulled out of directing Jude Law (pictured) in Hamlet, the final production in the year-long residency at Wyndham’s Theatre (See News, 10 Sep 2007). The Shakespeare tragedy runs from 3 June (previews from 29 May) to 22 August 2009.

Donmar artistic director Michael Grandage will take over from Branagh, meaning that he’s now directing all four high-profile productions in the season - with Twelfth Night, starring Derek Jacobi, and Madame de Sade, starring Judi Dench, falling between the runs of Ivanov and Hamlet.

Branagh, who continues in his role as Donmar West End artistic associate, has had to withdraw because of commitments to the forthcoming feature film Thor, a project he’s recently undertaken. Theatregoers who’ve already booked for Hamlet can apply to their point of sale for a full refund before 29 May 2009 should they no longer wish to see the production because of the change of director.

Commenting today, Michael Grandage said: “I am thrilled and flattered to have the opportunity to direct Jude Law – one of the leading actors of his generation as he takes on one of the most important roles of his career. Kenneth Branagh will continue as artistic associate of the season and we have arrived at this arrangement very amicably whilst I still have time to proceed with a brand new production of this great play next year. From the outset, Ken has been a huge support and inspiration for the Donmar West End season – a project that we could not have realised without his input.”

Jude Law said: “I feel privileged to be part of the Donmar West End season and to be directed by the company’s artistic director Michael Grandage on Hamlet. It was Ken who brought me to this project, and with his support and guidance, as one of the greatest Hamlets of all time, and with Michael directing, I can’t imagine a better scenario for me, as an actor, to undertake the role.”

Because of his new commitments on Hamlet, Grandage has postponed making his National Theatre debut (See News, 17 Sep 2008). He was due to revive Georg Buchner’s 1835 piece about the French Revolution, Danton’s Death at the NT in 2009.

You know, Jude Law wouldn't be too bad as Loki. maybe they should steal him too.

Wonder what changes/new direction he will add to the script...

I think most people who read it said it was a good script....but too expensive. To those that read it, what do u think would have made it better?

IMO, i think thor needed more battles or fight scenes before being stripped of his power. Plus it seemed to me the hammer should have played a bigger role at the end. I felt like the hammer which is this bad ass weapon custom made for him....made a "cameo" in the script....

I dont want to know the plot. Might be time to dip out.

Maybe it's time for THOR to get his own Spoiler/Non-Spoiler sections? I never really noticed at what point in production these movies get their own sections. Will it be after Thor is cast, after shooting begins, or just whenever the admins/mods feel like it?

Ask them ;)

when the admins feel like it. Bug them enough and it might do something.

I still want to hear official confirmation of Branagh as well as what Branagh has to say about it in general before Thor actually gets a forum.

Branagh actually starting to scare me. He is an awesome choice for Thor, but I wonder if his control freak side will somehow have a negative reaction on the shared universe Avengers movie. Think Nolan and JLA but on a bigger scale

I'd rather have a great Thor movie that's too good for the Avengers franchise than dumb it down for continuity purposes.

Thats not what I meant. I meant what kind of hissy fit would Branagh throw if they decide to put Thor in the Avengers and hes not protrayed in a way that Branagh is happy with./

then he's already done the movie so who cares?

or were you worried about a Thor 2?

I doubt Branagh will be the type to constantly open up about the movie for the fans' benefit, ala Favreau.

And I'm not planning on bugging the admins, I was just wondering :hehe:

I really doubt that Branagh, after about 20 years of directing, is going to start doing sequels. I see him doing a one-off mythological influenced film and then handing it off to someone who wants to do more superhero based adventures.

Yeah, Thor 2. Marvel wont stop. They'll continue without Branagh I'm sure then you will probably get your dumb down Thor (possibly).

Its not about opening up to fans, but more along the lines of a press release presenting his heads at as far as tone, concerns, story direction. Its done for most movies.

I guess so but has he directed something that warranted a sequel
