Kenneth Branagh to direct Thor

Interesting... but I thought it was suppose to be about his redemption?

Exactly cause if Odin had to throw him out of heaven than he wasn't always the Hero we've come to know him to be. Which having to send him to Earth whether if thats in the present time or not doesn't really matter.

After watching Beowulf the other night, I couldnt help thinking about the score.

I'd love something like Silvestri's Beowulf score for Thor. Nice and Powerful and epic sounding.

SteakFace_Sneaks asks:
On Twitter, you said the Thor movie will rock. Why? Tell us, 'cause I don't know what's happening with it.

JQ: Quite simply, I've had the pleasure of discussing story direction with Kevin Feige at Marvel West and what they have in mind is going to absolutely blow everyone away. Quite simply, it's Thor, our Thor, Marvel's Thor. I think every Marvel fan will be thrilled with what's on tap.

Beowulf did rock. And it did capture a Tales from Asgard approach. I wonder what exactly Marvel has in mind for Thor?

Kenneth Branagh is a good director, let's just hope he doesn't get the idea to star as Thor.

Im sure he won't.....he might throw a cameo for himself in there, but that'd be about it....

I'd say it'll be a bit more than a cameo. I fully expect Branagh to give himself a supporting role - and the film will be better for it.

Do you see a delay?

With a script that's not 100% ready, a non-full time director unknown for fantasy movie creation, queueing behind another Marvel movie, and actor that's hard to find - it's quite a challenge to finish in less than 1 1/2 year.

No

-No script is ever 100% ready when shooting starts, but they've been refining this one for like a year and a half now.
-How is Branagh not a full time director
-What does Iron Man 2 have to do with Thor (not) being delayed?
-I have no idea where you are getting that the actor is hard to find

Yeah I think it should be on time. The Incredible Hulk didn't start casting until April 2007 before filming that summer for release the next.

I'd expect to see Branagh in a supporting role, maybe Odin. Favreau had a small part in IM, and he's the same breed of actor-turned-director.

That is a mistake which I do not see Marvel repeating. They didn't start filming until July, after Iron Man had finished filming. Not having a trailer ready for SDCC07 was a MASSIVE mistake and hurt the film's BO, imo.

The script is ready. JMS did a rewrite.

IESB did a script review on Mark Protosevich's draft awhile back in August 2007. Of course there have been I am sure several re-writes since that time, as scripts do, but the script dealt only with Thor in his native land of Asgard, his father issues with Odin and his battle with his brother turned evil-doer Loki with hopes of Asgard domination with no mention of the modern world.

We are now getting word that there has been an addition to the end of the Asgard driven Thor story that very much gives credence to further Thor stories and how Marvel plans to bring everything together for the Avengers film due out in 2011 a question even Tony Stark himself pondered, Downey Jr. said to MTV, "The danger you run with colliding all these worlds is [director] Jon [Favreau] was very certain that 'Iron Man' should be set in a very realistic world. Nothing that happened in 'Iron Man' is really outside the realm of possibility. Once you start talking about Valhalla and supersized super soldiers and jolly green giants it warrants much further discussion."

A reliable source tells the IESB that the character of Donald Blake has been added to the end of the script. Let me reiterate that he wasn't there before, the script was set entirely in the land of the Norse Gods.

The introduction of the character is essential to how Marvel will tie Thor into the Avengers that is set in contemporary Tony Stark/Hulk timeframe. It explains how the actual Thor film will be set in the ancient time of the Norse Gods and how they will subsequently bring the character into a modern time with Donald Blake discovering the magical Norse hammer Mjolnir and turning into Thor.

Now is Thor sent to live amongst the humans with no memory of his life as Thor until he finds the hammer as in the comic book? I would have to assume so but this will all happen after we see Thor in his native land battling other Norse Gods in Asgard in order for the audience to learn his backstory.

Now can they explain all this using an epilogue approach a la Samuel L. Jackson in Iron Man with the main story still focusing on the Thor character in Asgard or does the Blake character and his storyline have a bigger role?

Don't know for sure, but he's been added says our source. Take it as a rumor if you need to but it makes complete sense.

We've also been told that director Kenneth Branagh will have an acting part in the film as well - a throw back to Jon Favreau's role in Iron Man. Guess Louis Leterrier missed that boat as he didn't appear in The Incredible Hulk.

One more thing, no J. Michael Straczynski is not doing the current re-write of the script, he has confirmed this repeatedly.

Stay tuned for more THOR news from the IESB!

(gee wonder who said this MONTHS ago hmmmm...) :whatever:

Makes perfect sense. Blake is the best way to bridge the gap. Now I wonder; will Blake and Thor be played by one actor or two? Could Branagh himself be playing Blake?

Branagh might be a background Viking or maybe another EMT that knows Blake

Branagh isn't a big ego guy he will probabley give himself a small supporting role. I doubt very much he would cast himself as Blake or Loki.

the only flaw I see in this is the idea that most of the movie takes place in.... Ancient Norse times.

Brannah himself said it was a chance to deal with interdimensional beings, the gods may be timeless and asgauard may seem anchient, but it exists as a parrallelle universe/dimension. Asgaurd is not in the past, it is in the pressent, and how exactly does the hammer get lost???? on earth none the less.

I still say most of the movie will take place in Asgaurd, with Loki doing something to the Rainbow Bridge 100's and 100's of years ago. In the modern sense I would call it a bridge of light, Asgaurd is cut off from the world of men, and ill events involving Loki and perhaps Sutur have something to do with the need to lock earth away from asguard.

Dr. Donald Blake feels to much like a mix of the Hulk and Superman, gives a god a human side like Kent, and gives a near indestructible being like the Hulk a vullnerability.

Branagh isn't a big ego guy he will probabley give himself a small supporting role. I doubt very much he would cast himself as Blake or Loki.

But by the sound of the IESB report, Blake appears to be a very small role. "Added to the end," almost like it could be a scene as small as Nick Fury's in IM/Stark's in TIH. If it is that small, it's probably the perfect role for him to play.

Dr. Blake is not a mix of Banner and Kent cause Thor being put into Blake body's was a punishment not a way to disguise himself. If Asgard exist outside our own universe its quite possible that our perception of time is very different from there own.

i think its going to be hard for the general audience to get punishment and the finding of the hammer as two perfectly aligned events.

I read Thor for a long time, never understood Blake's role, as when I was reading it was very very small.

Exactly... and I'm so sure Blake will have a role in this film.

That was a major mistake, IMO. I didn't really enjoy The Incredible Hulk all that much, :(. I feel it could have been a lot better had they not rushed it so late.

Agreed.

I think the Governator would be a great Odin

Please tell me that's a joke.

Well crap, I was really hoping for Uwe Boll.

:funny:.

I doubt it. Isn't Blake supposed to be a young medical student? Branagh's 48, and overweight. He's one of the finest actors I've ever seen, but even he couldn't pull Blake off.
