I didn´t get to watch the whole thing, but I saw some of it and here´s some thoughts...
- Other than the nanotech FX - and Deana Russo´s beautiful eyes - the highlight of it for me was KITT, the computer. I liked Kilmer´s voice and I thought they got right most of its "computer logic" perspective on human emotions and behaviors, that´s where the more witty moments came.
- Didn´t care much for the leads, but then again, they weren´t given exactly David Mamet dialogue to begin with. And let´s not be hypocrites, KR was NEVER about Laurence Olivier acting and Shakespearian writing.
- I thought the idea of doing a more fun and lighthearted hour-long primetime show was good, but you know, I´m the furthest thing from a prude there is, but if your target audience is families, to indicate a threesome and lesbian sex in a non-subtle way right off the bat was probably not the smartest move...
- Even though some of the FX were cool, I think the best way to revive KR would have been as a big-budget feature film series, like the one Glenn A. Larson was developing - and will be much harder to get done now. It was much easier to impress audiences on a TV budget in 1982 than in this day and age when people can see a bunch of 200-million budget movies every year. A HUGE part of KR´s appeal is the cool things the car can do, and it pales compared to what some of the coolest prop cars in blockbuster movies have done.
- Even though I believe some of the people involved are fans, in terms of the franchise this was much more about NBC taking advantage of a copyright hole to rush out an easy profit on a well-known property and a big sponsor deal than about truly revitalizing the concept.
