The main worry I had is that it was drop the originals straight faced surreal satire in favour of making it a more conventional screwball comedy with some "lol 80's" references but Sandberg staying in the main role is a good sign that's not happening.

Shipp, who is replacing Eiza Gonzales in the film, will play Rey Porter, a news anchor who will do anything to get the best story.

Jeezus that looks incredible. Can i get a recap as to whats holding this movie hostage again?

Funny, I was wondering what happened to the movie and I literally was just looking about this yesterday. Short answer is legal issues. Per Variety:
After principal photography on “Kung Fury 2” wrapped in late 2019 following shoots in Bulgaria and Germany, post-production work stopped the following year due to a lawsuit between the producers and the film’s Chinese investors Creasun. In late 2020, a lawsuit was filed against Creasun Entertainment USA, the LA-arm of Creasun Media, accusing it of not paying $10 million that it promised, effectively shutting down the production. At the time, Creasun asserted that the lawsuit was meritless and filed because it had exercised its contractual rights to takeover the film.

Oh crap. In other words, we're not likely seeing this thing. Thats so tragic, man. This is the kind of thing that crushes filmmakers' dreams. :disappointed;
