L.A. Noire (PS3, 360) - Part 1

The story was also boring as hell. I mean, the climax case of the game is essentially a long-winded insurance scam?

...like, really? That's what they came up with?

Took a few years off from gaming and finally got back into it.

Was wondering if anyone else finds it hard to guess if someone is lying or not. I think it's a load of horse**** at times. The person will make an obvious face that they're full of **** but it turns out wrong a lot of the time.

Yea, i had a few moments where i thought i was picking up on a tell and judged incorrectly. Altho i rather it be that way vs something too easy to decipher. It would of been boring had every person in the game that was lying looked to the left or something. The tricky part is knowing when to accuse them or doubt them. If you think they are lying and have evidence to prove it, go ahead and accuse em. If you think they are lying but have no evidence, doubt them.

LA Noire had such great ideas. Its a shame we never got any games like it since it was released. This is a game Id have gladly accepted seeing some "copycats"

Ya it gets a bit tough because those people are purposely trying to trick you. I'm curious to see how they innovate the system for ****e of the Orient.

It doesn't even matter if you guess right or wrong anyway. I deduced the "right" guy for a case and arrested him and then I was penalized because I didn't purposely put the "wrong" guy in jail that the captain wanted me to.

So stupid.

That was the point man. It was the politics and corruption of the 1940's LAPD. Including that was extremely authentic. Plus that didn't happen for every case, just that one.

Yea I'd kill for a game based on the tv show Luther that incorporated some of the interrogation that this game had.

That was the point the game fell apart for me. I had completely and utterly bungled up an interrogation and then I got a call from some army official who gave me a huge piece of evidence that trumped all of the denials from the interrogation. It was this moment wherein once I knew that I couldn't possibly "fail" the case under any circumstances that it really lost me.

I remember messing up a lot on my first playthrough, so I used a walkthrough during my trophy run and there were a few times where I felt like I wouldn't have ever gotten it right on my own. Though, there were also times throughout the game where I felt like they were holding our hands too much.

I understand that's how it was...I didn't have a problem with that. My problem is that I received a 3 star rating instead of 5 for doing the "right" thing, yet it has no real impact on how your character or story progresses. Basically, you don't have any real choice or consequence in LA Noire's story. You can play like a straight shooter or you can completely screw up your cases and interrogations and it doesn't change a single thing. What's the point of that? The entire game is just putting the wrong guy in jail over and over again lol.

And I really tried to like this game, believe me. For the first hour or so I thought it was really neat.

Oh yea, i got ya. I agree with ya on that. But you werent putting the wrong guy away over and over again, more often than not you sent the correct dude away. The game lost me after the Dahlia case. I also hated the [BLACKOUT]character switch[/BLACKOUT]. And i ended up hating Cole. Team Bondi had a great concept, they just couldnt quite flesh it out properly. Deff hope we see another title similar tho in the next gen. We need more detective games.

I liked the game, but for a game that took over 5 years to make, I expected better.

Yea for sure. I was working at Gamestop at the time and we would tell anyone who would listen how great this game was gonna be. Nope. Missed the ball on that one.

Yeah, it wasn't necessarily a bad game. But it was a game that had good ideas that were just not executed properly. Not to mention, the inclusion of the name Rockstar really made people think it would be similar to a GTA game, but if anything, it lacked all of the extra stuff that made GTA so great. My biggest gripe was that after finishing all of the cases, there was nothing to do. The city felt pretty dead and empty.

Yea but from get go they told ppl this wasnt gonna be like GTA. You are a cop, you arent gonna be running around blowing pedestrians up. I didnt have a problem with that. I mean this was really a linear game set in an open world. My issue was the story. It peaked with the Dahlia case and went downhill extremely quickly.

That was a big problem for me as well as the subpar animations, the bad shooting mechanics, the ridiculously dumb character switch in the third act and it was horribly linear

The character switch was for the best bc I was hating the main character by that point

Well yeah, that's what I mean. You were a good cop, so it made sense that you never tried to cause Mayhem. But like in GTA IV, there's were so many extra activities like going bowling, playing pool, getting drinks, that made you feel like you were actually a part of the world. But in this game, there was none of that. Like you said, it was a linear game in an open world, which is why I always felt like this was more like Mafia II, which was ironically set in a similar time period. Although I felt like the narrative in that game was much better.

To be honest, when Cole died at the end, I didn't really care. My reaction was more of a "Again?", since this was the second or third time Rockstar killed off a major character in the last few games. But there was no disappointment like when John died at the end of RDR.

Yea, i had high hopes for Cole Phelps. Alas, twas not meant to be.
