Comics Latest My Cup O' Joe--Quesada drops a Spider-Man related bombshell

Mayde this is how they will change 22 years of Spidey history... They will erase Kraven's suicide. I hope I'm wrong, because that would take all the impact away from Kraven's Last Hunt.

Something is going on with Kraven. Besides his new daughter, I mean. (And I gotta say, I'm kinda curious what we will get from the storyline involving Ana, her mother and the Kravinoff family tree alluded to in the letters section at the end of "Kraven's First Hunt.") There was a solicitation for a ASM cover last year showing someone walking away from Kraven's tombstone. For some reason I was thinking it had to do with New Ways to Die. Obviously not.

As for what Joe has in mind, I have no clue. I will be sure to read about it here first before I decide if I will buy it or not. :cwink:

I personally don't think it will be Kraven. how does Kraven being alive effect the rest of the Marvel Universe?

I dont actually think its Kraven either. I was just mouthing off. :o I really dont have the slightest idea what Spidey's marriage to MJ could do to change the whole Marvel U.

Whoa i think everybody's gettin confused and its my fault, the event that will "affect almost every marvel title" is coming from the Spiderman/FF-4 team up coming next week, it has nothing to do with what Quesada said is coming in 2010. My bad.

For the record, I do NOT think this will bring back Ben Reilly, whatever this event is. My reason being quite simple... every time I've anticipated him returning, he never has. Most of the time it was just a case of trying to read tea leaves or falling for a red herring. Why should this time be any different?

They tease and tease and tease.... especially in these columns.... but it's clear they don't really have any intention of revisiting that period.

A few years ago, I would agree with you. But over the past couple years--between comic conventions, interviews, letters, columns, blogs--there has been a lot of requests for Ben Reilly to return. And Quesada knows that. He is, if nothing else, a good businessman, and bringing back Ben Reilly would be a pretty good sales gimmick, especially given the slumping numbers for ASM.

I think the fact that Gage was given the greenlight for his X-Men/Spider-Man mini, which featured clones and Ben Reilly, is a pretty big concession on Marvel's part in terms of referencing the Clone Saga.

I'm not saying it will happen, but it seems clear (to me, anyway) that Marvel has been feeling out its audience on the Ben Reilly subject, so I wouldn't be surprised if they did bring him back.

lol... kguillou has inadvertently started a meme that this event will "affect the whole Marvel Universe." :woot:

I started reading/following Spider-Man during the Clone Saga, so I would be thrilled if Ben was revealed to be alive. If theres room at DC for multiple Flashes and Green Lanterns, then I don't see how hard it could be for a good writer to find a niche for Ben in the MU. In fact, Marvel needs to bring Kaine out of Limbo as well, he has a lot of untapped potential. But I doubt that Ben is coming back anytime soon.

What, pray tell, could that bombshell be you ask? Well:

That's right, folks. One More Day, despite Joe Q's insistence, did change more than just the marriage and therefore One More Day DID in fact alter the Marvel Universe. Now the question is--what was that second change? My guess it's either Mary Jane was never pregnant the entire time she and Peter were together, thus altering the entire Clone Saga (maybe even resulting in Ben Reilly still being alive), or that it's something to do with whatever MJ whispered to Mephisto--perhaps saying she wants to remember everything?

Your thoughts?

I have two responses:

a) While I may not be reading the book sanymore, this isn't a suprise. They knew that loophole after loophole would be found, and someoen at Marvel probably realized that Bf/Gf are incredibly different from Husband/wife...and that most people do NOT date after the wedding is called off.

They finally wised up and saw that the differences from such a change would alter some pretty important events in the past 20 years worth of stories, and decided to man-up, and admit it, and fix the mess a lil' bit.

Response b)

I EFFING TOLD YOU SO!!! THE LINE TO KISS MY @$$ STARTS HERE!-------->

Aloha,
I always had the feeling that to make the change work, instead of MJ accepting the proposal of marriage, she felt safer LIVING together. This would be in line with MJ's reluctance to get married based upon her mother's bad experience as well as more in keeping with her party girl image. If they lived together then most things could easily have happened. I always said No marriage-NO Honeymoon in Paris. But they could have had a lover's holiday in Paris.

New Dan Slott interview about Amazing Spider-Man: http://comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=20605

I love these comments Slott made:

Once “Face Front” finishes, readers won't have to wait too long to see Slott's next “Amazing Spider-Man” issue. The writer will make his return to the title with the giant-size “Amazing Spider-Man” #600. “Spidey #600 is going to be a blast! One of [Spider-Man editor] Steve Wacker's current passions is making #600 one of the biggest, thickest comics known to man and packing it with all-new material. No reprints! Having this giant tome of Spidey-Love barreling at you! I believe we’ve already leaked that I'm working on a Doc Ock story. And I'm going to sound sappy but I don't care, the first comic I read where I kind of got choked up and cried as a kid was the issue with the death of Captain Stacy. Along with his origin that's my favorite Doc Ock story. I really feel honored to be working with such an iconic and important Spider-Man character—and on a centennial issue!

“Since I'm working on issue #600, I owe it the readers to take my best shot at telling the best Spidey and Doc Ock story I can. The page count on this is enormous and there will be an important moment, a landmark in the lives of these characters. Plus there will be plenty of other surprises and guest stars. I'm really trying to tell a big anniversary story. This is me trying to step up and write a movie-worthy script for a Spidey/Doc Ock adventure, and I'm really excited about that.”

Sounds like we're going to get one hell of a great Doc Ock story in #600. Can't wait!

I'm surprised no one has brought up the possibility that maybe the thing that didn't happen was Gwen's death.

I mean, whatever it is, it's going to be huge, and most likely a "life changing event for Peter Parker" in the eyes of the comic book readers. Gwen fit's that bill, and other than that, what would Marvel possibly want to bring back into Spidey's life?

Its definitely not Gwen, Quesada and Wacker have said before that they prefer to keep Gwen dead. She's not coming back.

anybody notice that NOBODY remembers that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. Including Norman Osborn, Mac Gargan's Symbiote, and Eddie Brock (anti Venom) both Brock and Gargan remember being bonded to Spidey but that's it.

Wow, could you imagine if they did that? That would be like the final nail in the coffin for a LOT of spidey fans. I think even Themanofbat would object highly to that. If they resurrect gwen they might as well reset the whole series with peter as a 16 year old again.

Imagine being in the room with all the writers if someone said yes to bringing back Gwen.

They already did that. It was called 'Ultimate Spider-Man.' :woot:

The House of Ideas needs a mortgage. :hehe:

Hmm, the interview just kept me guessing.

-Did Mephisto take away the marriage and cause something else to change?
-Did Mephisto take/change the marriage and something else (not keeping his end of the bargain)?
-Or maybe it had something to do with MJ whispering that thing to Mephisto?

i'm going all out and saying uncle ben comes back.

it'd make sense for MJ to want him to not be dead.

yeah it's definitely Uncle Ben.*completely sarcastic*

I'm still going to say Gwen is a possibility. Plus it doesn't come out for another year. What other major event happened to Peter that they could take away?
They already brought back Harry.
If it is not Gwen, then I cannot think of anything else that would make a difference to Peter's life.
Unless it's something dumb like he never wore the black suit. It would explain why Venom is ******ed now.

Joey Q's already said they've changed at least two things with the devil retcon. First the marriage, secondly the baby, so unless Joey forgot about the interview he gave right after OMD, this is something else.

Considering how much the braintrust hated the idea of gwen coming back, I doubt it's that.

Anyone else think this might be an April Fool's gag?

:yay:
