Ledger on The Joker -- Again!
Author: Jett
Wednesday, September 13, 2006 - 12:34 PM: After being silent for about a month since word broke that he’d been cast as The Joker in THE DARK KNIGHT, Heath Ledger has talked quite a bit about nabbing the part here of late. Here’s the latest from MSN.COM:
It's Ledger's next role as Batman's nemesis The Joker in Chris Nolan's "The Dark Knight" that has fanboys' tongues wagging. Ledger says he hasn't paid attention to the scuttlebutt on the Web about his casting and wasn't that surprised to get the offer from Nolan.
"When he explained to me the angle he wanted to take, I was like, 'Yeah, I could do that,'" Ledger says. "[Nolan's] going to make it a lot more sinister, and we've got a little plan for him, but it's exciting. Any opportunity to don a mask is always exciting to me."
[BATMAN (1989)] was dominated by Jack Nicholson's acclaimed performance as the psychotic villain, but Ledger isn't intimidated by his predecessor's turn.
"I love, love, love what Nicholson did," Ledger says. "[But] his performance was catering to the style of directing the movie was made under. It was a Tim Burton film. It wasn't Chris Nolan."

Got a little plan for him eh? Can't wait to see what it is... A reminder, only Bat-Movie news will be featured on this page. Make sure to check out and bookmark the following link for all other BATMAN NEWS.

This was posted in the other topics, but whatever.

Also, it's more appropriate to credit MSN for this, not BOF.

So umm...I wonder what the "Ledger nutriders/Nicholson haters" think about Heath's comments? :o

"...wasn't that surprised to get the offer from Nolan."

I'm not liking this attitude at all, I'm damn near close to telling him to ****.

Wait until the film is released and you've actually received critical acclaim from fans and critics before sounding like a cocky bastard.

OH NOES!!!1!! He sed mask again! Ledge wil ware teh mask in dark night!!!111.

That's...............a bit strong spirited. Would you have the same reaction if this had been Christian Bale commenting before Batman Begins? just something to think about.

No I wouldn't have had the same reaction had Christian Bale said that, because he's proven himself time and again that he is able to pull off a character like Batman, pre-begins mind you. Ledger, though a fairly decent actor, has not shown he's able to pull off a complex character like Joker by looking at his limited amount of movies. It would be wise for him, to shut up and let his acting speak for itself when the time comes rather than spewing overconfident comments about how he's "It".

has he actually mentioned the mask thing in seperate interviews? the way he phrases it there doesn't seem like he's speaking metaphorically - "Any opportunity to don a mask is always exciting to me"

Yeah, he used it in another interview too. I just wish some reporter would just have the balls to straight up ask whether Joker will have the green hair, white skin, and red lips. How hard is it to do that? You'd think it'd be the first thing asked..

Only a comic fan would think to ask that. A normal reporter would simply assume that to be the case, or not care at all.

It sounds pretty metaphorical to me.

So its a little cocky, but I would rather him be confident in his ability and attitude than some weak, nice guy. The fact that his comments got your panties in a bunch means he's doing the right thing. LEDGEOWNED baby.

The whole "mask" thing REALLY is just a metaphor. Why in the hell would need to wear a mask anyway? I do wonder, though, why he keeps on referring to the whole "mask" thing.

I don't think he means a literal mask...it's metaphorical.

unless he's talking about the Red Hood.

Didn't Ledger say in another interview that HE was surprised he got the role? :)

This news does nothing but make me smile at the fact that Ledger seems to be excitied and passionate for the role.

Ledger Talks The Joker & More
Author: Jett
Friday, September 8, 2006 - 9:33 AM, 8:44 PM CENTRAL TIME: According to Bob Hoskins (via IESB.NET), he has not been approached about the role of The Penguin, but he’s certainly like to do it…

And the big news: Heath Ledger has finally spoken about playing The Joker. Here's what he had to say (via THE TORONTO STAR):

"It's definitely going to stump people. I think it'll be more along the lines of how the Joker was meant to be in the comics, darker and more sinister."

“I wouldn't have thought of me, either. But it's obviously not going to be what Jack Nicholson did. It's going to be more nuanced and dark and more along the lines of A Clockwork Orange kind of feel. Which is, I think, what the comic book was after: less about his laugh and more about his eyes.”

Right on Heath, right on man! One of the most ridiculous "qualifications" for The Joker amond a small portion of fans was "Can Ledger do 'The Laugh?'" Ledger's right -- it IS all about the eyes...

guh - yes, The Joker WILL LAUGH. The key to the character, however, is the crazed eyes burning with insane intensity- not the laugh.

You can't have The Joker NOT laugh. That would stray too far from The Joker we all know and love.

Awesome, Thanks for clearing that up .

What he said...he's going to laugh, but that's not what makes him crazy.

so what this joker isn't going to laugh ?

His quote says its less about the laugh and pranks and more about his sinister character. There will be the laugh and the pranks, but they won't be the focal point. Reading comprehension people, reading comprehension.

i thought that him saying that he expected to be cast was a bit cocky too until i realized that he was telling Nolan "yeah, i could do that". that means he probably had a good audition/meeting with Nolan. if he had a good meeting with Nolan...then it's to be expected that he might get casted. so...when he got casted, it probably wasn't a surprise.

as far as Heath saying that he wouldn't have thought of himself for the Joker...well, he probably thought that BEFORE he met with Nolan.

I think they misquoted him. Another interview said he was surprised and "wouldn't have thought of me either". I think they should have said "Ledger says he hasn't paid attention to the scuttlebutt on the Web about his casting and was that surprised to get the offer from Nolan." It makes more since.
