2008 PREVIEW: LEE BERMEJO’S
JOKER SKETCHBOOK
The artist teams up with Brian Azzarello for DC’s stunning all-new graphic novel

Lee Bermejo wants it known he did not copy the Heath Ledger visual from “The Dark Knight.”

“I actually drew an image for a Batman website in 2005 that pretty much established the look of the Joker as I draw him,” says Bermejo of his forthcoming Joker graphic novel in collaboration with writer Brian Azzarello. “I was about 40 pages into drawing this graphic novel when they released the first image of Ledger.”

“I hate when people say this, because it always sounds like hyperbole, but it’s the best work of Lee’s career,” says Azzarello. “And if only the bastard had kept up the same level, I wouldn’t have had to say that. People are going to be blown away by it.”

Bermejo says the story, told through the eyes of a Joker henchman, “features pretty much every major Batman villain and deals with the relationship between the Joker and all these crazy baddies that run around and do terrible things.”

JOKER
“I tried to figure out what would make the Joker frightening to me if he really existed,” Bermejo says. “One of the points of the story is that the guy’s ugly outside and in, so I just scarred him up. After I established the smile I wanted to reinforce the fact that the guy was probably not attractive even before the Chelsea grin so I gave him bad skin and of course the big, beak nose. The hair, posture and attitude is just a twisted, drugged-out version of Christopher Walken.”

As to how Joker got those scarred lips? “Kids, don’t play with cutting blades…” he jokes. “Actually, I would rather not say what happened. I think any element of the Joker’s backstory should not be touched with a 10-foot pole. The less you know, the better.”

HARLEY QUINN
“Visually, I threw her in a vinyl outfit and made her look as much like a junkie as possible. Harley Quinn is like a stripper to me. I don’t want to know her name, I don’t want to hear about her life, and I sure as hell don’t want her to talk. Just dance, baby…”

Sounds great cant wait

wow that looks awesome...whens it comint out?

This is going to make me ejaculate many, many times.

A story about Joker told through his henchmen's eyes, featuring every Bat-Rogue there is, written by Brian Azzarello and drawn by Lee Bermejo?

Yep. Ejaculate many, many times.

Definitely looking forward to this.

I can get over Azzraello's terrible writing for Bermejo's awesome art :o

I can't get over Bermejo ****ting on Burton's Joker and then going and making changes to the Joker his damn self.:o

BLASPHONY! I challenge you to a duel, at dawn, twenty paces! :cmad:

did you read For Tomorrow? or Broken City? The man cant write superhero stories to save his life, he's a better crime writer.

First part of For Tomorrow and Broken City, and you still speak blasphony. :o

Eh, It looks very nice. But I think I'll give this one a miss. I'm a bit burnt out regarding Joker in the comics right now and I don't need to see Harley get the crap beaten out of her for the millonth time.

I might wait until the dust has settled on TDK.

Yeah. Too bad The Joker and "crime" have nothing to do with each other, huh? :cwink:

Fangasm?

Yes please.

Ditto though, Azzarello isn't that good a writer. Bermejo will cover him though!

Looking forward to this, Bermejo art is fantastic.

This sounds like it could be really cool. Kind of like LexLuthor: Man of Steel set in the Batman universe (and hopefully a bit better :))

Not a fan of Bermejo's style usually, but this looks excellent.

So this will be out about the same time as the movie? that would make alot of sense I suppose.

looking forward to seeing all the villains, Bermejo style

in the BOF interview he kinda gave the impression that Azzarello has done his own unique portrayal of the Joker, something a little different. This should be be interesting as well

Sounds and looks excellent so far. I can't wait to see what else it has in store...

Looks sweet. If nothing else, it'll be a pretty graphic novel. I hope it's on the level of LEX LUTHOR: MAN OF STEEL.

so is this coming out as a 1-shot? and when is it supposed to come out exactly?

So is their a name for this Graphic Novel yet?

Yes, it's called "Awesome."
