I absolutely adore Legend, it's certainly the best fantasy film AFTER the LotR trilogy.

What's really amazing is that Legend looks as incredible, if not more incredible, than the LotR films, and was made 15 years earlier with no CGI and far less money.

Lol fascinating isn't it. It's just a testament to how much could be accomplished back then with real sets, real photography in the real world, that it still outclasses a lot of what's done today. Attack of the clones and its cgi city for instance just doesn't come close to touching what ridley did in blade runner. I never think of it as much more than a cool videogame level I'd like to play whereas when I watch blade runner, there's a moment that's completely earned by the film when I think "is this real?"

That sense of grounded ultra realism really pulls me into the story more. If I want a cartoon, I'll watch bugs bunny. Thats why I'm not liking the trend in today's action films to do everything by the new bloated neck lucas method. There was a time when lucas did use real sets, and ocassionally blue screen. Now of course it's backwards. He'll use cartoon characters, completlely cartoon landscapes and ocassionally a real prop and set if they need a floor. Give me Empire strikes back where Hamill's in a real set getting hit by real flying debris than a completely cgi enviroment where he actor has to imagine stuff that'll be put in the computer later. I firmly believe that if the star wars prequels were made under the same restricted conditions as the original trilogy, they'd have been more competent films. Emphasis may have been placed more on the characters than the fx.

It utterly amazes me that to this day, the yoda puppet with frank oz's hand up its pooter can still hold up well against all the new cgi crafted characters we have now.

Maybe it's arguable but in my opinion the original yoda puppet has not been topped by any creature done in cgi.

Cinematically, I agree with you Lotr does borrow(much better term considering that's what art is) from Legend. However story-wise LotR came way before Legend. Now let's talk turkey... I LOVE Ridley Scott, the man is a god to me. Kingdom of Heaven DC, Alien, Blade Runner, Matchstick Men, etc... However Legend is boring as hell and the dialouge is terrible from what I remember. The effects and cinematography are great... But the movei drags like no one's buesiness but... Due to my love for Scott, I bought the DVD anyway...

No no no no no. Legend's greatest strength besides its visuals is its dialogue. I'd have to say tom cruise annoyed me most in the movie, but besides him, i think it's pretty well written. The soundtrack is dodgey though and yes the pacing is shot to hell, but look at that paint job!

Now, the similarities between ridley's film and Lotr to me at least are unbelievably striking. I saw legend on tv one night; then when I saw lotr years later I thought, "now this seems familiar" mostly due to the orc's similarity to the goblin creatures from legend.

If some average joe of the street was shown Legend and Lotr back to back I'd dare you they'd think the movies were somehow linked.

that said, Ridley Scott for the Hobbit, hollywood!

LOTR is NOT a remake of Legend.
Please confirm you are joking with that statement.

Nevah. Remember that thread about movies that were remakes in spirit??? Thats where I got the idea for this thread...

That being said I'm ALSO a huge fan of the cinematography, Sets and makeup in Legend but I have to say as an artist I can't see ANY of this movie being an influence for LOTR. Jackson based all the art direction from old paintings, New Zealand backdrops and realistic historic design.

Legend is more childrens fairytale, whilst LOTR is straight fantasy.
Legend was an experiment that failed as a movie. LOTR is one of the best trilogies.
Personally I love both but LOTR wins by far.

I'll have to challenge you if you don't mind... Legend shouldn't be watched by fragile children. The real children's fairy tale is the LOTR trilogy compared to the scary and serious fantasy stuff you'll find in ridley's film. I'd dare anyone to find me anything in jackon's trilogy that tops ridley's scene here:

Please go ahead. I'm waiting.

I don't actually feel Lord of the Rings has anything at all to prove, but for the sake of it I've found two completely random LotR clips from YouTube just to demonstrate how it measures up.
