Let the Right One In

Almost all other vampire movies are just silly and chilish compared to LTROI. The film manages to create a new and fresh take on the vampire mythos while giving some really nice charater development along the way. And while I agree it really isn't that scary a film it does remind me of Guillermo Del Toro's The Devil's Backbone with its mix of horror and fantasy.

Got this a few days ago and plan on watching it tonight after Heroes.

I hope all the positive reviews/comments from everyone hasn't hyped this movie up to the point where I might find it overrated.

Scary thing though, one of my best friends who also loves horror films and is very picky when it comes to his likes, said this was terrible. :(

I'll find out in about an hour.

I guess later. You'd just be disappointed because some scenes were left out.

(Haven't read the book, but that's the case usually.)

I saw the movie again the other night and loved it even more. I think Two-Face make-up in TDK should have been closer to the old man disfigured face in LTROI,that really looked painful and more real than CGI/Mocap Eckhard (who nonetheless still pulls it off and delivers a brillant performance because he is a great actor).
Also why wasn't that film nominated for best foreign film and why didn't it win it ? Once again shame on you Academy.

What a shame, I mean it won't ruin the movie but it totally strips away at the characters in those scenes. Little nuances such as that could be huge for someone not familiar with the film. I mean its dark humor was one of the film's main strengths. Why mess with it?

That really blows, the alternative is to buy the R2 DVD, but then I'd have to get a region free player, etc.

Whoever was in charge of the subtitles should be fired. It makes no sense.:whatever:

Sweden didn't submit it. I don't remember the name of the film they chose for submission.

Thanks. They should have imo. Maybe Alfredson would have a little golden man by now. Well, he is still young, hopefully he delivers more wonderful films like LTROI in the future and gets one.
Also often when I read about directors doing horror films they talk about trying to emulate Polanski and Kubrick and more specifically Rosemary's baby and The Shining for their subtle approach to the genre. Most of the time they fail, Alfredson hasn't imo and I believe LTROI sits right there with those masterpieces. I guess only time will tell.

Eh I don't know if he would have an Oscar or not. I was shocked when Pans Labyrinth didn't win for Best Forgein film when it was nominated that year.

Good point. You can always count on the academy to get it wrong somehow.

Amen. Why do we always want the academy's recognition when they always drop the ball anyways? And there's no argument in saying what is highbrow or not. It's just some stuffy group's elitist opinion. TDK was every bit as good as any of the LOTR films but they just don't "go in" for anything based off of a comic. Now a medievil fantasy, sure, they're all aboard. Shame on them, now and always.

OMG..I've heard that the subtitles on the US DVDs are GOD awful and dumbed down! ahhhh.

Having seen both versions now, I have to say the US dvd and blu-ray subs aren't that bad. They are more subtle, if anything. There's really only about three instances where the differences are really dissapointing to me. I believe all three of those instances are pictured on the link as well. Being a massive foriegn movie fan as well, I've seen MUCH MUCH worse...dubtitles anyone?

actually, i thought the movie was better than the book. a rare thing.

While I haven't read the book, after reading a lenghty summary of the book and the missing content/scenes not in the movie, I think I'd be right there with you. Hakan, Eli's first handler, coming back as an evil vampire sounded odd, not to mention the whole pedophilic side to him I hear the book alludes to.

Looks like the subtitle issue is being addressed, more here.

this is not meant to be that SCARY of a film, so those of you who are like oh no there isn't much horror and all this crap, that's not the point of the film

the point that this is a twisted creepy love story/friendship at its core and it's a brilliant film

QFT. It is also a wonderful film about the turmoils of childhood.

They should have called this movie "Better Than Twilight"
;)

Best vampire film ever? Debatable. Most innovative and least cliche? Possibly. It's an interesting approach that still relies and touches on many of the trappings of vampire lore. To be honest, though, while I enjoyed the movie, I'm just not sure what the hubbub is about. I wasn't that impressed with it overall beyond the basic ideas. Yes, the film looks nice, and the actors are decent, and the concept is fairly innovative. But quite a lot of the actual vampire stuff is borderline cheesy horror stuff, which works, but not necessarily on a serious level. And I can't say that I was terribly impressed with the gorier stuff at the end of the movie.

Nice understatement imo. I was really impressed by the actors portraying Oskar and Eli, but to each their own.

They were kids. They acted like kids. No particuarly impressive emotional range that I could see. And it's difficult to get a reading on it in a sense due to the subtitles. Because the subtitle actors were...well, not great.

At least we dont' have to think about Lestat and all that.

It's called subtlety and knowing when to pull back. It's a lesson most of our American actors, young and old, need to learn. Those kids nailed many many scenes in the film. I think Alfredson's direction played a major role with their performances as well and all involved justly deserved all of the awards and accolades they garnered. Hell, if anything, this film still hasn't gotten the press it deserves.
