Harley wears sparkly hot pants because she thinks they're sexy and fun, not because she wants guys to notice her assets. She dresses for herself and not for the attention of others is what I think she's implying.

I like that Margot seems to recognise the cartoonish innocence of the character.

That's not really true, though. There are multiple instances in comics where Harley deliberately tries to show off her sex appeal.

Take her recent team-up with Power Girl. When a mugger points out that Harley isn't as "well endowed" as Power Girl, she shows him her booty in an attempt to entice him.

And let's not forget her sexual romp with literally a room full of Joker cosplayers.

Harley is an extremely sexual character. If she's wearing hot pants, it's because she wants guys to look.

Well, if we look at the character in comic books, she totally likes to make an impression, she likes sparkly stuff, she's a performer. She likes attention. At the same time she has some kind of bipolar disorder (I'm not a doctor), and she flips back and forth from an innocent fool to a manipulative sociopath, who likes to mess with people.

Exactly. Which is the real reason why she's dressed like that and doing the things I listed in the trailers. Not some BS about liking sparkles. Which is how Margot and Ayer are trying to play it off.

It's obvious to me that they're trying to do some pre-movie damage control on the treatment of Harley (and the other women in SS) by watering down their intentions with straw man arguments. It's annoying. If you knew there'd be backlash don't dress the characters like that in the first place imo.

People try to have sex with their partners all the time. That doesn't mean they're "openly sexual", it just means that... they're humans.

B:TAS Harley might have been a little naughty, but she was not an "openly sexual" character. That's Ivy's job. She only became such when creativeless people got a hold of her. And that includes Dini and Timm who wrote that infamous dumb moment in the Mad Love comic, yes.
Well, ok, those two are in no way talentless, but they handled the same story much better in the BTAS episode (which came out after the comic, IIRC).

Not sure if the problem is the delivery or the tired joke though. She sounds fine in other scenes.

I have found a lot of the things that she has said in the trailers to be cringe inducing tbh.
