Lord of the Rings Trilogy: Do epics get any better ?

LOTR trilogy: do epics get any better ?

  • Best epic trilogy ever

  • It's awesome, one of the best

  • It's pretty good

  • It's okay

  • Not really my cup of tea

  • Rubbish ! There's 10 hours of my life I'll never get back

  • Lord of the who ? Never saw these films.

  • Oh, sorry, thought this thread was about Harry Potter.

I'm speechless

Yeah. That is beautiful. Damn.

Didn't order it, but actual screens are problematic. I love the natural colors, but image is frequently too smudgy, barely with any grain and it's just unpleasant to my eyes.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy is without a doubt THE cinematic achievement of the 2000s. For my money, it is one of the great masterpieces of cinema. Some movies if they are on TV, I may watch a scene or two and then change the channel. Others when they are on, I am glued to the TV like a zombie. These are movies that if I start watching, I just keep watching. The wife and I marathoned the EEs when we were stuck at home during the lockdown earlier in the year. So many just great moments.

Love these movies.

On the subject of The Hobbit films, yeah those suck. But they in no way diminish LOTR.

So glad the green tint is gone. Gonna wait and see what general thoughts are on this remaster before I spent any money. There's nearly always huge drawbacks.

Gonna get both trilogy sets on 4K a soon as possible, it’s been far too long since I watched these movies, I just don’t get much time to watch 3 hour + movies anymore.

Pre ordered through best buy on the 28th and it's supposed to be delivered tomorrow. It still says "getting ready" on the site, but I think that's normal.

The LotR EE trilogy is my no.1. The Star War OT and the MCU culminating in IW/Endgame combined are the only experiences that are close.

Scenes like this will never not give me goosebumps. I regret not seeing these movies sooner nowadays.

I posted this recently but will never get bored of it.

Theoden's best speech, actually the best speech in the whole trilogy. One of the best moments in all the films, and there is a lot of competition for that spot.

Agree on all points ! Especially that LOTR is the GOAT, and that the Hobbit wasn't great ( I don't own a copy of the films, and I was in one of them - what does that say ?)

I rewatched the first two Hobbits. Cut out the LOTR crap and AUJ is pretty good. It does feel like an adventure and Jackson understood that. It's just the LOTR stuff contradicts it. I think if that had been all left out and the movie was two instead, they could have been solid. TDOS and TBOTFA lag because Bilbo's arc is complete in the first movie. Bilbo has nothing to ****ing do in between Mirkwood and Smaug. Forget about the third. Christ it's near unwatchable due to its uselessness.

I still ache for Del Toro's vision. I really think it needed an injection of that freshness. But I still believe Jackson could have delivered a solid version of the good in these movies.

I still think The Godfather is the greatest trilogy of all time even with the weak third installment because the first two are THAT good, but LOTR is #2 IMO. I think the LOTR trilogy is one of the greatest balances of art and commerce in cinema history. All around fantastic and as close to perfect as any film can be.

The Hobbit trilogy is absolute rubbish.

This. An Unexpected Journey is actually really good. So many great things in it. And I love the Misty Mountains theme that was confusingly never used in the other two!? It’s up there with the fellowship theme!

Love both trilogies ordered both 4K sets. My Hobbit set arrived a few days ago, LOTR set arriving tomorrow :mrk:

Also if you want good comparisons this is the channel to check out. Guy does excellent comparison videos.

It's helped by the fact Bilbo and Thorin have character arcs. The second is just a series of set pieces that's just shapeless.

Poor Shore, there just isn't any footage he could conjure up something incredible like LOTR. They're polar opposites. Every note of music in that trilogy is incredible. It never fails to give me chills. In these? The Misty Mountains theme is the only thing memorable.

Agreed!

Btw, I got my copy of the 4k LOTR boxset. haven't started watching yet, but will soon! I may pick up the 4k Hobbit set eventually. I actually do enjoy those movies for what they are. sure they can't hold a candle to the LOTR trilogy, but I think they're still enjoyable.

From the Hobbit movies, I can only remember the Misty Mountains theme and Fire and Ice from BotFA. The chorus coming in while you see Smaug's blurry silhouette as Laketown is burning is probably the only moment in the entire trilogy that gave me chills.

I do wonder how much of what happened with The Hobbit was the studio pushing PJ to create another LotR cash bonanza and how much was PJ simply being too self-indulgent and nobody able to tell him "Maybe you shouldn't do that, PJ."

From what I understand, a bad cocktail of both.

I will say that I don't think PJ was really happy with his experience on The Hobbit (and I'm wondering if it burned him off big movies for good) and you can certainly tell that he is much prouder of LotR.

I'll ask him next time I see him....only half joking because Wellington is a small place.

I suspect WB wanted a big earner, really the Hobbit has enough story points for 2 movies at most - IMHO that would kept Bilbo front and centre while still being a fast paced fun ride.
