Yep. The Truman Show is a very messed up film. Really good but messed up. Out of all of Carrey's roles, that's the one that actually made me uncomfortable, especially after I saw it again in this day and age of technology. One of the best satirical pieces I've seen.

I have actually always thought TRUMAN SHOW is one of the most underrated Science Fiction films of the late 90's. It really is a scifi film if you think about it. And a hard one at that. Given enough resources (and that is the fiction part of it. I don't see any "network" or entertainment company or companies putting in the level of money this would require) you could do what Truman's "masters" did in some form or another. Also, major props to Ed Harris in the movie. His character to me embodies people in the world that acquire so much power, influence or wealth that they really do start to think and act as some sort of "God" in their own mind.

Truman Show is not this underrated, it got several Oscar nomination and one gigantic snub with Carrey winning GG but not scoring a nomination. Considering how thought provoking and ambitious this movie is it's amazing the Academy went for it

Also, Broken Arrow was made around the same time and it has similar tone.

Another thing I find impressive about The Truman Show is that it came out well before the public's obsession with reality TV was even a thing. It was before Survivor, Big Brother, The Bachelor, Jersey Shore, the Kardashians, Paris Hilton, Real Housewives, American Idol - all of that. The only "popular" reality show going at that time was The Real World, and being on a basic cable network like MTV, that wasn't nearly as mainstream as reality TV eventually became (Survivor was kinda the mainstream breakthrough for that genre). So along with its other impressive qualities, it really felt ahead of its time.
