Whedon mentioned the song choice was his. Also IIRC there was a report which confirmed Joss was the mastermind behind most, if not, the entire sequence.

Which is even more odd since it didn't match the overall tone of the film at all.

Joker Origin Film Reportedly Wants Robert De Niro For Supporting Role.

This would be so sweet. I could see him in a Rupert Thorne-esque role.

DeNiro would've been a big get...in the 90s. Not really feeling his acting power nowadays to be frank.

From the Aquaman thread.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What excites you about having Aquaman in your pipeline?

TOBY EMMERICH: That it’s coming out this year. I’m excited to have it in as the last Warner Bros. release in 2018.

Let me ask that a different way: What excites you creatively about the project?

I think it’s hard in superhero movies to go to places you haven’t seen before. You think of how much superhero content there is in theaters and television and [streaming], it’s hard to go to someplace you haven’t been before. Aquaman and the underwater world of it all is fresh and different. James Wan has done an incredible job with his team. It’s taking you to a different place and imagining it in a way you haven’t seen before. For a superhero movie to be in that realm is cool and badass.

What made Wan the right choice to direct?

He’s a franchise maker and builder. I would give him credit for what became known as The Conjuring universe. He initiated the Saw franchise. And he initiated the Insidious franchise. And he built on the Fast and Furious franchise — his film [Furious 7] was the highest grossing one. So when you think of franchise makers and franchise builders there are not many people who have that resume. That alone makes him an inspired choice. And he’s also made many movies as a director and producer for us at Warner Bros. and at New Line. So we know him really well. William Goldman wrote my favorite book on moviemaking, Adventures in the Screen Trade, and he wrote, “make movies with people you like, because it’s really hard, so it’s easier if you really like them.” And we really like James.

These movies are monsters. So when you have a director you really like, and who likes you as a company and a culture, it’s a happier experience and, more often than not, a better movie.

What made the Dec 21 date the right time to release it?

I didn’t pick the date. The honest answer is we’re excited about the movie, we want to release it as soon as we can, and that’s the soonest it can be ready for a giant tentpole date. The world is changing — look at Black Panther, that came out in February — so any date can be a tentpole date. But this is the soonest that it can be ready and we’re happy it didn’t miss the year.

For decades Aquaman was this mocked character in pop culture, in places like Entourage and other shows. What’s the most worried thought about Aquaman you’ll admit to having?

My most worried thought is it won’t be ready in time. I thought it was a clever gag in Entourage. I think it works as a gag. But I know it works as a movie. I know the character and the world is worthy of a movie. One doesn’t undermine the other to me.

Coming off Justice League, how important is it that this movie works?

It’s important. It’s important that it works. I think everybody really worked very hard to make a really good movie. It’s an expensive movie. We believe this movie can work and we’re going to do everything we can as a company — distribution, marketing everything — to make sure it’s successful around the world

There have obviously been changes behind the scenes at the company since Justice League. Is there anything philosophically different now in terms of approaching the creative on DC Films versus a year or two ago?

I want to focus on Aquaman. Aquaman is a bit of a bridge movie yet there is still the connective tissue to the DC movies. But just like how [director Patty Jenkins] brought her own sensibility to Wonder Woman — yet it was very connected [to Justice League] — that movie was very much a Patty Jenkins movie this is very much a James Wan movie.

The tone of Aquaman from the footage I’ve seen is a bit lighter and has more humor than Zack Synder’s movies were known for. Was there a conscious decision to shift away from that?

If you spend time with James and [Aquaman star Jason Momoa], they brought themselves to the party. They very instinctively were who they were when making this movie. And that comes through in the tone of this movie. But I don’t think it was a reaction to what had come before. I think it was them being true to themselves. … I’ll tell you this: I have two girls, 10 and 14, and they’re so quick to tell me what movies are going to bomb — my movies, other people’s movies…

Are they right?

They’re shockingly right more than I would have thought. Kids are closer to the zeitgeist, everything is a raw nerve ending, they pick up on so many cultural subtleties it constantly blows my mind. I showed them the Aquaman trailer and I’m enthused and excited that they’re so excited for Aquaman.

When you look at how the last few superhero films in general performed, is there any kind of conclusion to be drawn about what type of films are working now?

I think the good movies work better. Somebody once said the best business strategy in motion pictures in quality. And I think in a world of Rotten Tomatoes and social media, what’s been proven the better the movie — particularly in the superhero genre — the better it performs. You can’t hide the bacon anymore.

It’s interesting you say that because [DC Films] has had some titles that have done very well at the box office, but there’s been a Rotten Tomatoes debate about them. Some have wondered how important is it that such movies are critically successful, and it sounds like you’re saying it really does matter.

I would say no matter what, the better the movie is the more advantage it is. Now when you’re talking about art, I do believe that it’s tough to judge art at the moment when its presented to the world. My father was very involved in the arts, he was always taking me to museums and galleries and historical buildings. He believed any kind of art — whether it’s fashion or sculpture or architecture or filmmaking or music — it takes 20 years to judge the quality of something. Twenty years after Sgt. Pepper or Born to Run comes out, then you can understand what that album was. I guess when I say “quality,” I don’t want to judge anybody’s movies completely at the moment of release. But I would say there are movies that are right for their time, that an audience is ready for, that’s in sync with the zeitgeist, and I think you need a movie whose quality is recognized at the moment of release so it’s in touch with the culture of the moment. We’re at a unique moment around the planet and certain types of movies are working better than others at this moment of time. And I do think Aquaman will sync up with the global culture zeitgeist of what’s happening right now.

He has a big point about how the internet has changed things. People being able to share their opinion this fast and this wise a reach seems to be worrying a lot of studios.

@ Chip Chipperson (don't know how to pull over a quote from a dead thread)
It most certainly was in there, I remember laughing at that quite fondly

Yeah, but it was different. I don't think we saw Deadpool swinging his swords to make it seem like he blocked them all like we saw in Wolverine Origins, only to reveal all the holes. There was a part of it that was different, that much I remember.

I hope long hair Barry makes a comeback

Maybe he realized fitting all that hair under a cowl was hard.

I still think it's awesome. It's not exactly a Dirty Grandpa scenario.

So an Elseworld Joker movie with Joaquin Phoenix and Robert De Niro, produced by Martin Scorsese.

:hmr:

Are they making this thing a one off? Could Matt Reeves Batman be set in this universe? If Joaquin becomes the Joker in this movie THEN becomes a villain in Reeves' film it'd be amazing...Though Philips developed this thing around 2015-2016...

If they wrap before Christmas then they might actually make an August/September 2019 release, 2-3 months before WW84...when is IT2 coming out?

Edit: and now that Leto Joker movie sounds exactly like a move to calm Leto down...and nothing more

I have doubts that it will be out before WW84.

But who knows? There could be an announcement at SDCC about the ''Elseworlds'' movies.. or knowing WB so far, probably not.

I think the latest report says "next year"....we'll see.

I don't want it in 2020 because I'd rather see MOS2, Flash, BOP, SS2 or Batman than having to wait longer because of this Joker movie lol

Stalker-like? Go check this Kane's rather sick pure stalking TiVo behavior if you want some good example of what "a creepy stalker-like fixation" is: http://forums.superherohype.com/showthread.php?t=541443&page=2

What I did was, I made some remarks the poster did not like, the poster approached me due to that via a private conversation, I apologized and stopped addressing the poster in my messages here.

Far from Kane's obssession of TiVoing members of this thread. Must take some effort to sort and collect all those messages.
Not to mention some member there called me an "idiot" (not that I care), but mods saw it, the message is still there... So nice double standards here.

That's correct. It was a knee-jerk reaction to some passive aggressive derisive thing from Starlord that was deleted by mods as well as my "marveltards" comment.

That's basically it. This DCEU-focused thread is constantly visited by people who mock DCEU and Snyder. I don't know why, but they are free to do that, and they do. But when we discuss that stuff here, they just go by to utter some contemptuous s**t so we are reminded that when you find some positive values in Snyder's films it's ludicrous. After so many months! of this I lost my nerve and snapped. Is it that surprising?

But f**k that. I don't like to put people on the ignore list, everybody can bring something interesting to the discussion, so I'll just have to keep my cool next time it happens.

It’s going to be very fascinating to monitor Jared Leto’s behavior after Phoenix probably nails it as the joker

I wish his publicist good luck when that time arrives

The screams for Joaquin’s joker to be in the DCEU will probably drive Leto mad and he’ll get that forehead tattoo in real life

Joaquin is so good that he would’ve nailed Luthor in BvS had he accepted

Thankfully he didn’t because then we wouldn’t be getting this, but it’s also bittersweet because I think him as Lex probably could have saved the movie for me, assuming the character was drastically written different before Snyder opted to cast Eisenberg

Not going to lie, I'm STILL shocked that Phenoix is delving into this thing. He seems like a mysterious force to be reckoned with and a very hard "get" in the industry so I'm shocked he's going for this.

Maybe being the mysterious force to be reckoned with makes him perfect for Joker. If Joaquin inks, it must be good.

Allegedly he's been interested in this sort of role for a while (he was a frontrunner to play Doctor Strange at one point), but the big thing that kept him away was the potential time commitment. He didn't feel like signing on to do a big franchise that might prevent him from pursuing other projects.

So Joker was a big win/win, as a comic book film that'll be a one off, meaning he doesn't have to worry about spin-offs or crossovers.

Yeah he's flirted with the genre numerous times. He's always either in talks or on the short list. He's been a pipe-dream for most. The "DC Black" label might be the perfect situation for a lot of fans favorites like Phenoix or even actors like Matthew McConauhey, who fans talk about often in castings.

I guess time will tell.

This new DC label could also give a lot of A list actors the chance to play iconic characters and not have to commit to multiple films

I can see the appeal. We could get multiple versions of beloved characters in more intimate settings. I’m all for it at this point. Just cultivate talent.

Who knows, if Joaquin and Phillips make it work, it might open the floodgate to a bunch of future low budget films recruiting dream/arthouse talents

Gosling, DD Lewis, Dicaprio, Denzel Washington, Hanks, Ridley Scott etc

LOL at EW trying to bait Emmerich. There's even typos

Actually, the interesting thing there is even though he kinda dodges the question, he does more or less own up to it. He just does so very carefully. He keeps talking about the "zeitgeist" (that must be his new favorite word) and follows up the comment about tone by saying that he feels Aquaman better fits the modern zeitgeist of what people are into right now. It's basically just a very roundabout and diplomatic way of putting it.
